Keith Payne realized he was pr fr the first time when he was in the furth grade. The awareness came t him when a new lunch lady in the cafeteria asked him t pay fr his lunch.
“Previusly, the lunch lady had just waved me n because I’d always been n free lunch,” he says. “But this new lady didn’t knw hw things wrked, and it was the first time that I had been asked t pay fr my lunch.”

“It’s nt like I was prer the day after that than I was befre. Nthing bjective had changed. But because f that subjective awareness. I began cnstantly cmparing myself with my classmates and felt really unhappy,” he says.
Keith Payne is nw a scial psychlgist at the University f Nrth Carlina and shares hw the awareness f inequality affects the way that bth ur minds and ur bdies respnd.
“As we walk thrugh the wrld, it is very natural fr us t cmpare ur lives with thse f thers. We think abut urselves in terms f being n a certain ladder（梯子） with sme peple abve us and it can cause serius psychlgical cnsequences,” he says.
One is that it makes us mre willing t seek ut risks and engage in high-risk, high-reward srt f behavirs. It affects us in ways that are similar t physical threats.
“But I think there are wiser and less wise ways t make thse scial cmparisns,” he says. “Upward scial cmparisns feel terrible, but they can be mtivating. Dwnward scial cmparisns feel great, and yet they can be demtivating. But in the last decade, 1%a year was the nrm. Even with the wave f innvatin in artificial intelligence（AI）, prductivity grwth remains weak—less than 1% a year, which is bad news fr ecnmic grwth.
A new paper by Ashish Arra and his team suggests that universities’ rapid grwth and the rich wrld’s slwdwn prductivity culd be tw sides f the same cin. The paper suggests that scientific breakthrughs frm public institutins “caused little r n respnse frm businesses” ver a number f years. A scientist in a university lab might publish brilliant paper after brilliant paper. Often, hwever, this has n impact n crpratins’ wn patents, with life sciences being the exceptin. And this, in turn, pints t a small impact n the verall prductivity.
Why d cmpanies struggle t use ideas prduced by universities?
The paper says that, free frm the demands f the market, researchers in university labs fcus mre n satisfying their curisity than finding breakthrughs that will change the wrld r make mney. “T sme degree, such kind f research is nt a bad thing; sme breakthrugh technlgies, such as penicillin, were discvered almst by accident,” it writes, “But if everyne is ding that, the ecnmy suffers.”
