    Zhai Yuliang becmes extra busy whenever the hlidays are arund the crner, starting with New Year’s Day. The Beijinger, wh’s in his 60s, has just finished a pair f palace lanterns fr a curtyard hme in the capital.
    “The wner wants every part f them t be dne the ld-fashined way, s that they will fit perfectly with the grand style f their histrical huse,” says Zhai, wh has practiced fr mre than fur decades the craft that was listed as a natinal-level intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
    One f the mst ppular styles, which is als Zhai’s favrite, is the duble-layered hexagnal (六角形
    的) palace lantern that features dragn heads, eaves (檐), pillars (柱) and windws. “It’s full f Chinese elements, and has maintained typical mdels and structures fr thusands f years,” he says. Palace lanterns culd als feature many ther specific mtifs (图案) fr particular events. Birthday celebratins in the palace, fr instance, invlved lanterns that featured images f flwers and peaches t cnvey wishes fr lngevity (长寿).
    Hwever, he stresses, they must maintain their essence t be classified as palace lanterns – that is, they must cmprise a wden frame with panels featuring painted scenes and traditinal tassels (流苏) r Chinese knts as adrnment (装饰). Mst imprtantly, they must be created using the specified prductin techniques, which require ver 100 steps.
    In the ld days, a single craftsman had t d everything frm the wdwrk t the painting. “Smetimes, it tk several mnths t make a palace lantern,” Zhai says.
