The Hug (雨果) Awards, the wrld’s tp science fictin awards, were annunced n the night f Oct 21, 2023. Chinese writer Hai Ya’s bk The Space-Time Painter wn the Hug Award fr Best Nvelette. He became the third Chinese writer t win a Hug award after Liu Cixin in 2015 and Ha Jingfang in 2016.
When creating The Space-Time Painter, Hai Ya drew his idea frm a famus painting by Wang Ximeng frm the Sng Dynasty (960-1279). Based n Wang, Hai Ya created a painter named Zha Ximeng. After many hard times, Zha’s mind leaves his bdy and enters a space where a mdern pliceman is trying t slve a case abut an ancient painting.
Hai Ya’s stry with science fictin began in his childhd. “When I was a child, the bkstre in my hmetwn helped create a beautiful garden in my mind that belnged t me nly. In it, science fictin ffered the mst beautiful ‘flwers’. Science fictin pened up a new wrld t him as a kid,” said Hai Ya.
