Sadaf’s childhd was happy. She enjyed ging t schl and meeting her friends. But ne day, she returned hme running a high temperature.
“We thught it was regular flu. But we were tld that I wuld nt be able t walk ever again nw,” she recalls.

Researcher Agata Trst and her clleagues at Delft University f Technlgy used a natinal database t track the address f every Dutch baby brn in 1995, a ttal f 140,338 peple, frm birth t age 23. Using gelcating sftware, they drew up a sciecnmic prfile (概况) fr each child's immediate neighbrhd, figuring the percentage f neighbrs wh were rich, middle class r disadvantaged.
After cntrlling a number f ther factrs, including parents’ earnings and levels f educatin, the researchers fund that a child's wn experience f wealth r pverty mattered less t their ultimate level f schling than expsure t well-ff neighbrs. The data suggest that grwing up in a rich area, with well-maintained parks, libraries and sccer fields, as well as interactins with educated neighbrs, culd bst a pr child's ability t see beynd their immediate hrizns (眼界).

The idea was ppularized by American psychlgist Barry Schwartz when he published his bk, The Paradx f Chice: Why Mre Is Less. Schwartz, wh has lng studied the ways in which ecnmics and psychlgy intersect (交叉), became interested in seeing the way that chices were affecting the happiness f citizens in Western scieties. He identified that the range f chices that we have available t us these days is far greater than that peple had in the past; hwever, cnsumer satisfactin has nt increased as much as traditinal ecnmics theries might expect.

Sadaf’s childhd was happy. She enjyed ging t schl and meeting her friends. But ne day, she returned hme running a high temperature.
