When the Museum f Mdern Art in New Yrk City purchased the painting frm a private cllectr in 1941, it was nt well knwn, but it has since becme ne f Van Ggh’s mst famus wrks.
The Harvesters
The Harvesters is an il painting n wd cmpleted by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565. It depicts the harvest time which mst cmmnly ccurs within the mnths f August and September. Niclaes Jnghelinck, a merchant banker and art cllectr frm Antwerp, cmmissined this painting. The painting has been at the Metrplitan Museum f Art in New Yrk City since 1919.
Guernica
Guernica, a large black-and-white il painting, was painted by the Cubist Spanish painter, Pabl Picass in 1937. The title “Guernica” refers t the city that was bmbed by Nazi planes during the Spanish Civil War. The painting depicts the hrrrs f war and as a result, has cme t be an anti-war symbl and a reminder f the tragedies f war. Fr us, ne f the many cultural shcks we experienced was during ur time in Blivia. We spent five mnths traveling arund Suth America but Blivia surprised us mst. Turism and the apprach t service in Blivia are, t sme extent, underdevelped, which is nt necessarily bad. Hwever, yu might get the feeling that the lcals dn't like yur presence. At times we didn't feel welcme at all.
Blivians will stare at yu, give angry lks, and ften wn't even say hi when yu cme t their stres and restaurants. After sme cnversatins with lcals, we were tld that the negative attitude had nthing t d with us. Blivians are just nt used t freigners and dn't really knw hw t handle turists. But we can't even blame them. After a lng and hard time as a Spanish clny, peple are still very suspicius f freigners.
What we lved mst and surprised us is hw Blivians keep their traditins alive, which is truly amazing. we ften saw lcals wearing their traditinal clthes and marketing their self-made medicine. These and ther effrts t preserve their custms deserve respect. Yu just can't see that in many cuntries in the wrld.
I lved their clthes s much that l brrwed a traditinal Blivian dress t try t vercme the “turist vs lcal barrier” and shw the lcals n the island that we truly lve their culture and appreciate it. Nearly 40 years ag, Peter Harrisn, a marine eclgist witnessed the first recrded large-scale cral bleaching(珊瑚白化) event. Diving in the Great Barrier Reel(大堡礁), he was shcked by the scene befre him. “The reef was made up f healthy crals and badly bleached white crals, like the beginning f a ghst city,” he says. Just mnths befre, the same site was filled with clrful trpical life.
“Many f the hundreds f crals that had been carefully labelled and mnitred finally died,” he says. “It was shcking and made me aware f just hw weak these crals really are.”
Cral exists tgether with phtsynthetic algae(藻类), which live in its tissues and prvide essential nutritin(and clratin). But high temperatures and ther stresses can turn algae pisnus. When this ccurs, the algae may die r be remved by the cral, a prcess knwn as bleaching because the cral’s clear tissue and white calcium carbnate skeletn(碳酸钙骨骼)are expsed. If the cral can’t reestablish its link with algae, it will starve r becme ill.
The widespread destructin Harrisn saw in 1982 was repeated n many ther Pacific Ocean reefs that year and the next. In 1997 and 1998 the phenmenn went glbal, killing sme 16 percent f the wrld’s crals. With rising temperatures, pllutin, disease, increased cean acidity, invasive species, and ther dangers, Harrisn’s ghst cities are expanding.
Scientists suppse that abut fur decades ag severe bleaching ccurred rughly every 25 years, giving crals time t recver. But bleaching events are cming faster nw — abut every six years— and in sme places sn they culd begin t happen annually.
“The abslute key is dealing with glbal warming,” says marine bilgist Terry Hughes. “N matter hw much we clean up the water, the reefs will die.” In 2016, a recrd-ht year in a string f them, 91 percent f the reefs that cnsist f the Great Barrier Reef bleached.

The link between what the men had dne as bys and hw they turned ut as adults was surprisingly sharp.
