Jshua Haveman, a flight instructr, demnstrated exceptinal curage and resurcefulness during an ff-duty rescue in Ysemite Natinal Park.
The dramatic rescue unflded n September 2nd, 2023, during Haveman's final stp f Half Dme, a peak twering at 8,842 feet. The incident began when a fellw climber fell apprximately 60 t 80 feet, cming t rest unsafely n a narrw ledge(岩架) hanging ver an abyss(深渊) f abut 8,000 feet.
"I knew peple were in truble as sn as I reached the tp," Haveman said. "It was cld and windy, and climbers were struggling t drp alng a smth metal cable n even smther rck. I drpped my backpack, grabbed my medical kit, and headed twards that place. Just then, I heard a scream and saw a climber sliding dwn abut 80 feet, landing n the nly spt that culd have saved him, preventing a fall f 500 t 1,000 feet."
Withut hesitatin, Haveman tk actin. Despite the tugh winds and hail, he risked utside the permanent cable barriers t reach the injured climber. His climbing expertise and extensive medical training were indispensable in this life-threatening situatin.
Haveman recalled the scene, stating, "The climber's legs were badly injured, s I cllected sticks and began climbing nt the ledge. Other climbers were cncerned fr my safety, but the injured climber was in extreme pain, s I left the cable area and jined him n the ledge." Gldin mined 200 years f data t analyze hw changes in wmen's participatin in the labr frce have been influenced by scial, plitical and technlgical change ver the past tw centuries. Befre Gldin's studies, it was widely thught that the increase in the percentage f wmen in wrk ver the curse f the 20th century was a reflectin f ecnmic grwth—higher grwth meant mre females culd be emplyed. But by lking back carefully at histrical recrds, Gldin shwed that the percentage f married wmen invlved in paid wrk was at least as high in the late 18th century as it is tday. Gldin has als shwn that inequalities in pay have nt fllwed a simple relatinship with ecnmic grwth.
