A small new NASA instrument may be able t help predict vlcanic eruptins and mnitr air quality.
Nicknamed NACHOS, which is shrt fr the Nansa t Atmspheric Chemistry Hyperspectral Observatin System, was launched frm Virginia n Feb. 19 abard a NG resupply missin t the Internatinal Space Statin. NACHOS will sn then be placed abard a tiny CubeSat satellite psitined abut 480 km abve Earth, where NASA hpes it will be able t detect gases like SO2 and NO2 in the atmsphere.
“A vlcan just waking up may emit SO2 befre there is any detectable seismic(地震的) activity,” LsAlams Natinal Labratry remte sensing researcher Steve Lve explained in a news release. “That gives us a chance t identify a ptentially erupting vlcan befre it actually blws.”
If successful, NACHOS Wil be the smallest and highest-reslutin(最高分辨率) instrument f its kind in rbit. NASA says that culd lead t new space-based systems that are able t mnitr air quality fr harmful gases in neighbrhds and individual pwer plants. “When we recgnize that these gases are present and can find ut their surces, we have the pprtunity t take actin and minimize negative health utcmes,” said Lve, wh is a task leader n the NACHOS prject.
In the past, NASA has created satellites t bserve these kinds f gases. But Lve said thse satellites traditinally required high-reslutin images and sensitive instruments that were cstly t prduce and perate. Smaller devices, like NACHOS, culd enable a wider use f the technlgy at a much lwer cst. If it prves successful, the technlgy culd als be used in Earth-based systems, NASA says. Lve and his team expect NACHOS t rbit ur planet fr abut a year. “That will give us enugh time t test ur instrument design and gather enugh test data t ensure ur technlgy cncept is reasnable,” Lve said. “Mre pwer and less weight set NACHOS apart and make it an excellent candidate fr future atmspheric trace gas missins.”
23.Why was the instrument NACHOS launched?
A.T imprve air quality.B.T help predict the vlcan eruptins.
C.T cntrl the emissin f SO2 and NO2.D.T resupply the Internatinal Space Statin.
24.What des the underlined wrd “That” in Paragraph 3 refer t?
    A.The launch f NACHOS.B.The remte sensing research.
    C.The detectable seismic activity.D.The SO2 emissins f vlcanes.
25.Which f the fllwing might Lve agree with abut NACHOS?
A.It is high cstly.B.It needs mre pwer.
C.It is a prmising instrument.D.Its technlgy has prved successful.

Abut five weeks ag, I nticed the skin f ur pet lizard was grwing dusty. Later, ur lizard emerged (出现) frm its tank with its ld skin flwing behind it. I didn’t think abut it much until a mrning last week when I kncked my favrite teapt ff the table. It burst int hundreds f pieces. As I swept up the mess, I wndered why we had been breaking s many things ver the mnths.
The destructin started three mnths ag. It was my husband’s birthday. He had just lst his jb. The uncertainty was starting t wear n us, s I wanted t d smething special.
“Let’s make a cake fr Dad!” I cried. My kids screamed with jy. We baked, iced and sprinkled fr mst f the day. Candles n the cake! Ballns n the walls! Flwers n the table!
Tw hurs befre my husband came back hme frm anther jb interview, my daughter climbed up t grab a glass vase frm a high shelf. It fell and crashed beside the cake. Tiny pieces f glass were everywhere. She sbbed ludly as I threw the cake away. My husband had banana pudding fr his birthday.
Three days ag, the light in ur living rm suddenly went ut. After several frustrating hurs f unsuccessful attempts t fix it, my husband suggested watching the Michael Jrdan dcumentary series The Last Dance.
The pignancy (酸楚) f Jrdan retiring frm his belved basketball t play baseball and what had pushed him t make such a tugh decisin tk me by surprise. As I watched him take ff his basketball unifrm and replace it with a baseball unifrm, I saw him leaving behind the layer that n lnger served him, just as ur lizard had. Neither f them chse the mment that had transfrmed them. But they had t live with wh they were after everything was different. Just like us. I realized that we have t learn t leave the past behind.
Humans d nt shed skin(蜕皮) as easily as ther animals. The beginning f change is upsetting. The prcess is tiring. Damage changes us befre we are ready. I see ur lizard, raw and nearly new.
Jrdan said that n matter hw it ends, it starts with hpe. With ur tender, hpeful skin, that is where we begin.

I recently gave a talk abut zer waste living t university students. During the Q&A afterward, the unavidable questin f cst came up. One student pinted ut that he “can’t affrd t buy $30 tthpaste.” While the $30 price may be a bit generus, the student did raise a gd pint that buying zer-waste prducts is ften mre expensive than the verly-packaged traditinal nes.
I tried t handle the questin as best I culd in the mment, but I kept thinking abut it afterward. I’m writing abut it because I’m sure many thers have similar dubts abut their wn abilities t reduce waste withut breaking the bank.
First, nce yu begin t explre the zer waste wrld, yu quickly realize hw pintless many prducts in yur life are. Yu start using fewer, buying less, and using them interchangeably. Sn yu’ll find yurself spending less mney verall, which balances the higher cst f the zer waste nes. The ttal number f prducts in my bathrm decreased by 50% when I became mre fcused n waste reductin.
Secnd, if yu stp t examine thse zer-waste prducts, yu’ll see that they are usually f better quality. Cmpanies usually redesign their packaging t be reusable, upgrading them t be healthier, safer, and greener. S yu’re paying extra mney nt just fr nn-dispsable(非一次性的) packaging, but als fr a better prduct that des less harm.
In my experience, higher-quality skincare prducts last lnger than cheap nes. My persnal habits have develped gradually, t. Knwing an item csts mre leads me t use it in small quantities and use it t the very end. Mrever, I smetimes even make my wn. The price-per-unit is cheap.
T qute Lindsey Miles, a zer waste blgger, “Zer waste is nt abut what we can affrd t buy. It is abut what we chse nt t buy.” T that student wh gt me thinking abut this, I’d recmmend starting with what matters t yu. Over time yu will figure ut where yu get the mst value fr yur mney. In return, yu’ll gain a sense f liberatin frm the cnsumer culture, and a rewarding sense f accmplishment.
29.What can we benefit frm zer waste prducts?
A.Saving mney regularly.B.Balancing the higher cst.
    C.Living a cnvenient life.D.Spending mney mre wisely.
30.What kind f prducts wuld the authr like t recmmend?
    A.Zer-cst.B.Tp-grade.C.Nn-breakable.D.Well-packed.
31.What is the authr’s purpse f writing this passage?
    A.T teach a life lessn.B.T intrduce a scial issue.
    C.T prmte a new prduct.D.T encurage a lifestyle.

He std and tk dwn his briefcase frm the verhead rack.
“Yes, I’d have said yu were an actr. The vice especially. Still, lawyers are actrs in a way, dn’t yu think? Plenty f drama in a curtrm.”
The train drew int the statin.
“I’m a film directr. Chsing a leading actr at the mment. Yu study faces. On the train. Everywhere. Always n the lkut. Anyway, enjyed ur chat. Bye.”

C.He has less jb pprtunities nw.D.He’s achieved great success in his acting career.
33.What did Hartley think f nt telling his jb?
