Mst students are ___29___ t discver this art f chsing. Learning t reasn abut happiness is as delightful as discvering that ne’s vice can be made t sing. Why, then, d institutins ____30____ teach it? In sme cases, intelligence members are encuraged t ____31____ specialized research rather than thinking abut the gd life. In 2020, OpenAI, a research lab in San Francisc, revealed a system called GPT-3. It is what artificial intelligence researchers call a neural(神经系统的) netwrk, after the web f neurns in the human brain. A neural netwrk is really a mathematical system that learns skills by lcating patterns in vast amunts f digital data. By analyzing thusands f cat phts, fr instance, it can learn t recgnize a cat. “We call it ‘artificial intelligence,’ but a better name might be ‘finding statistical patterns frm large data sets’,” said Dr. Gpnik, the Berkeley prfessr.
Mre recently researchers at places like Ggle and OpenAI began building neural netwrks that learned frm enrmus amunts f prse, including digital bks and Wikipedia articles by the thusands. GPT-3 is an example. As it analyzed all that digital text, it built what yu might call a mathematical map f human language — mre than 175 billin data pints that describe hw we piece wrds tgether. Using this map, it can perfrm many different tasks, like penning speeches, writing cmputer prgrams and having a cnversatin.
But there are limitatins. If yu ask GPT-3 fr 10 speeches in the vice f Mark Twain, it might give yu five that sund remarkably like the famus writer — and five thers that cme nwhere clse. Cmputer prgrammers use the technlgy t create small snippets(一小段) f cde they can slip int larger prgrams, but mre ften than nt they have t edit and adjust whatever it gives them.
Still, Dr. Gpnik described this kind f system as intelligent. “It is nt intelligent in the way humans are. It is like an unfamiliar frm f intelligence,” he said. “But it still cunts.”
Dr. Gpnik and many thers in the field are cnfident that they are n a path t building a machine that can d anything the human brain can d. This cnfidence shines thrugh when they discuss current technlgies. He admits that sme A.I. researchers “struggle t differentiate between reality and science fictin.” But he believes these researchers still serve a valuable rle. “They help us dream f the full range f the pssible,” he said.
Perhaps they d. But fr the rest f us, these dreams can get in the way f the issues that deserve ur attentin.
    43. Which f the fllwing statements crrectly describes GPT-3?
A It is meant t mnitr human’s neurn webs.
    B. It stres limitless data in its mathematical system.
    C. It can identify images and emply human language.
    D. It studies pictures and digital bks t invent patterns.
    44. In paragraph 3, the example f cmputer prgrammers is used t __________.
    A. illustrate GPT-3 is far frm perfect
    B. warn prgrammers against technlgy
    C. shw the prcess f slipping cde int prgram
    D. explain why GPT-3 fails t find Mark Twain’s speeches
    45. What des Dr. Gpnik think f the mathematical system f GPT-3?
    A. He finds it valuable because it maximizes the current technlgies.
    B. He dubts its wrth thugh it is remarkably similar t a human brain.
    C. He thinks highly f it because it plays a valuable rle in A.I. research.
D He believes it will interrupt ur thinking thugh it differs frm science fictin.
    46. What’s the authr’s attitude twards A.I.?
    A. Enthusiastic.B. Oppsed.C. Supprtive.D. Uncncerned.
    Sectin C
Directins: Read the fllwing passage. Fill in each blank with a prper sentence given in the bx. Each sentence can be used nly nce. Nte that there are tw mre sentences than yu need.
Hw t shw thers yu care
The idea that kindness can bst happiness is hardly new. Studies have shwn that prscial behavir — basically, vluntarily helping thers — can help lwer peple’s daily stress levels, and that simple acts f cnnectin, like texting a friend, mean mre than many f us realize. ___47___
“I have fund that kindness can be a really hard sell,” said Tara Cusineau, a clinical psychlgist, “Peple desire kindness yet ften feel trubled by the thught f being kind.” ___48___ They may questin whether their gesture r gift will be misinterpreted, r whether it will make the recipient feel pressured t pay it back.
___49___ Jennifer Oldham, wh lst her 9-year-ld daughter Hallie in July, recently created a Facebk grup — Keeping Kindness fr Hallie — that encurages participants t engage in randm acts f kindness. Peple have bught grceries and dnated schl supplies in Hallie’s hnr. “It will help yur wn heart, maybe even mre than the recipients,” said Ms. Oldham.
If yu are nt already in the habit f perfrming randm kind acts, r if it des nt cme naturally t yu, start by thinking abut what yu like t d. It’s nt abut yu being like, ‘Oh man, nw I have t learn hw t bake ckies in rder t be nice’. It’s abut: ___50___ And hw can yu turn that int an ffering fr ther peple?
    A. What skills and talents d yu already have?
    B. Stress can als keep peple frm being kind t thers.
    C. Why are recipients less likely t appreciate a randm act f kindness?
    D. But an act f kindness is unlikely t fail, and in sme instances it can create even mre kindness.
    E. Peple wh perfrm a randm act f kindness tend t underestimate hw much the recipient will appreciate it.
F But researchers wh study kindness and friendship say they hpe the new findings strengthen the scientific case fr making these types f gestures mre ften.
    IV. Summary Writing
    51. Directins: Read the fllwing passage. Summarize the main idea and the main pint(s) f the passage in n mre than 60 wrds. Use yur wn wrds as far as pssible.
    The risk f pre-schling
“Yung children learning t read is ne f the mst imprtant things primary educatin des. It’s fundamental t children making prgress in life,” says Dminic Wyse, a prfessr f primary educatin at University Cllege Lndn, in the UK. “While learning literacy is vital t childern, the way we teach it really matters.”
In a 2022 reprt, he states that English schl system’s intense fcus n phnics – a methd that invlves matching the sund f a spken wrd r letter, with individual written letters, thrugh a prcess called “sunding ut” – culd be failing sme children. A reasn fr this is that the tests used t assess that early learning may have little t d with the skills actually needed t read and enjy bks r ther meaningful texts. Fr example, the tests may ask pupils t “sund ut” and spell nnsense wrds, t prevent them frm simply guessing, r recgnising familiar wrds. Since nnsense wrds are nt meaningful language, children may find the task difficult and puzzling. It desn’t end up being meaningful, it ends up being memrising rather than understanding cntext.
Children wh attend intensive preschls d nt have higher academic abilities in later grades than thse wh did nt attend such preschls, several studies nw shw. Early educatin can hwever have a psitive impact n scial develpment – which in turn feeds int the likelihd f graduatin frm schl and university as well as being assciated with lwer crime rates. In shrt, attending preschl can have psitive effects n later achievement in life, but nt necessary n academic skills.
T much academic pressure may even cause prblems in the lng run. A study published in January 2022 suggested that thse wh attended a preschl with a strng academic emphasis, shwed lwer academic achievements a few years later, cmpared t thse wh had nt gained a place.

Mre recently, researchers at places like Ggle and OpenAI began building neural netwrks that learned frm enrmus amunts f prse, including digital bks and Wikipedia articles by the thusands.
    A. It is meant t mnitr human’s neurn webs.
    C. He thinks highly f it because it plays a valuable rle in A.I. research.
    D. He believes it will interrupt ur thinking thugh it differs frm science fictin.
    46. What’s the authr’s attitude twards A.I.?
    A. Enthusiastic.B. Oppsed.C. Supprtive.D. Uncncerned.
C 44. A 45. C 46. B
根据文章第一段“By analyzing thusands f cat phts, fr instance, it can learn t recgnize a cat.(通过分析数千张猫的照片,它可以学会识别猫。)”和文章第二段“GPT-3 is an example. As it analyzed all that digital text, it built what yu might call a mathematical map f human language — mre than 175 billin data pints that describe hw we piece wrds tgether. Using this map, it can perfrm many different tasks, like penning speeches, writing cmputer prgrams and having a cnversatin.(GPT-3就是一个例子。当它分析所有的数字文本时,它就构建了一个你可以称之为人类语言的数学地图——超过1750亿个数据点,这些数据点描述了我们如何将单词组合在一起。使用这张地图,它可以执行许多不同的任务,如撰写演讲稿、编写计算机程序和进行对话。)”可知,GPT-3可以识别图像并使用人类语言。故选C。
    【44题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段第一句“But there are limitatins.(但也有局限性。)”和“Cmputer prgrammers use the technlgy t create small snippets f cde they can slip int larger prgrams, but mre ften than nt they have t edit and adjust whatever it gives them.(计算机程序员使用这项技术来创建可以将其插入到更大的程序中的代码的小片段,但更多的时候,他们必须编辑和调整它给他们的任何内容。)” 故选A。
根据文章第四段“Still, Dr. Gpnik described this kind f system as intelligent. ‘It is nt intelligent in the way humans are. It is like an unfamiliar frm f intelligence,’ he said. ‘But it still cunts.’(尽管如此,Gpnik博士还是将这种系统描述为智能系统。他说:“它不像人类那样聪明。它就像一种不熟悉的智力形式。但它仍然很重要。”)”和第五段“Dr. Gpnik and many thers in the field are cnfident that they are n a path t building a machine that can d anything the human brain can d. This cnfidence shines thrugh when they discuss current technlgies. (戈普尼克博士和该领域的许多其他人都相信,他们正在走上一条制造机器的道路,这种机器可以做人类大脑所能做的任何事情。当他们讨论当前的技术时,这种信心就会油然而生。)”可知,Dr. Gpnik高度评价了GPT-3这个系统,因为它在人工智能研究中发挥着重要作用。故选C。
    【46题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Perhaps they d. But fr the rest f us, these dreams can get in the way f the issues that deserve ur attentin.(也许是这样。但对我们其他人来说,这些梦想可能会阻碍值得我们关注的问题。)”可知,在作者看来,尽管人工智能可以帮人类实现很多梦想,但同时也可能会阻碍那些值得我们关注的问题,所以对此持反对意见。故选B。

    【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述做善事可以帮助降低压力水平,以及如何做善事。
    【47题详解】
上文“The idea that kindness can bst happiness is hardly new. Studies have shwn that prscial behavir — basically, vluntarily helping thers — can help lwer peple’s daily stress levels, and that simple acts f cnnectin, like texting a friend, mean mre than many f us realize.(善良可以提升幸福感的观点并不新鲜。研究表明,亲社会行为——基本上是自愿帮助他人——可以帮助人们降低日常压力水平,而简单的联系行为,比如给朋友发短信,比我们许多人意识到的更有意义。)”,而F选项“但研究善意和友谊的研究人员表示,他们希望这些新发现能够为更多地做出这类行为提供科学依据。”中的“the new findings”呼应上文,并且“these types f gestures”也对应上文的“texting a friend”等,符合题意,故选F。
根据下文“They may questin whether their gesture r gift will be misinterpreted, r whether it will make the recipient feel pressured t pay it back.(他们可能会质疑自己的举动或礼物是否会被误解,或者是否会让收礼者感到有回报的压力。)”
根据下文“Jennifer Oldham, wh lst her 9-year-ld daughter Hallie in July, recently created a Facebk grup — Keeping Kindness fr Hallie — that encurages participants t engage in randm acts f kindness. Peple have bught grceries and dnated schl supplies in Hallie’s hnr. “It will help yur wn heart, maybe even mre than the recipients,” said Ms. Oldham. 【50题详解】
根据上文“It’s nt abut yu being like, ‘Oh man, nw I have t learn hw t bake ckies in rder t be nice’.( 这并不是说你会说,‘哦,天哪,现在我必须学会如何烤饼干才能变得漂亮。’)”以及下文“And hw can yu turn that int an ffering fr ther peple?(你怎么能把它变成对其他人的奉献呢?)”
