The images reprduced are fund n travel brchures, pstcards and maps—many f which are held in ur cllectins.”
One pster frm the exhibitin—Henry Wellge’s “Yellwstne Natinal Park” frm1904—was recently purchased with dnated funds and is nw part f UW Libraries’ Emmett D.Chisum Special Cllectins. Wellge, a prductive bird’s-eye-view artist, designed the piece fr the Nrthern Pacific Railrad, which used it t advertise the park. Therm Fisher is the cuntry’s premier STEM cmpetitin and reaches 65,000 middle schls frm acrss the US. There are 30 finalists---frm the nearly 5,000 applicants—that cmpeted in the Washingtn DC awards ceremny.
Shanya’s inspiratin came after a fire destrying a restaurant in her neighbrhd during the summer f 2022. “I had never really experienced smething like that befre,” she tld Washingtn Pst, abut the early mrning fire at Hlder’s Cuntry Inn, which started in the kitchen. “They had smke detectrs, and yet it still burned dwn,” she added. After she studied fire statistics and saw hw cmmn fires are, Shanya decided that she was ging t d smething abut it.
She spent mre than a year develping a fire detectin system that she believes culd have prevented the fire. That’s because traditinal smke detectrs sense active fires frm the smke in the air.
