My father ppsed my liberalism. I was verjyed when Randm Huse published my humrus memirs (回忆录) abut my past addictins. My father wasn’t s jyful. “Yu’re bringing disgrace n ur family,” he snapped.
At 87, when my father was admitted t hspital with heart and kidney failure, we had a rare afternn alne. Sitting by his bed, I aplgized fr taking s lng t figure ut my life.
“I have a lt f regrets,” he said, “It tk me t lng t make a decent living, screwing up jbs because f my bullheadedness and big muth.”

“That yu stuck t yur guns and became a success,” he said.
“Why didn’t yu ever tell me that?”
“I’m telling yu nw,” he said. He was pleased when I helped Olaf publish his first magazine piece.
I wish Dad were here s I culd share the latest stries by my physician students. But I lst him fur years ag. In a way, he still is, as I channel everything he taught me abut hard wrk, and never giving up ding what yu lve.
