Abut a year and a half ag, Patrick Dherty fund ut he had a rare, but disastrus inherited disease—knwn as transthyretin amylidsis—that had killed his father. A misshapen prtein was building up in his bdy, destrying imprtant tissues. Victims f this disease ften die a difficult death.
S Dherty was thrilled when he fund ut that dctrs were testing a new way t try t treat amylidsis. The apprach used a revlutinary gene-editing technique called CRISPR, which allws scientists t make very precise changes in DNA. On Saturday, researchers reprted the first data indicating that the experimental treatment wrked, causing levels f the destructive prtein t decrease in Dherty’s bdy.
CRISPR has already been shwn t help sme patients. And dctrs are trying t use it t treat cancer and t restre visin t peple blinded by a rare genetic disrder. But thse experiments invlve taking cells ut f the bdy, editing them in the lab, and putting them back in r injecting CRISPR directly int cells that need fixing.
The study Dherty vlunteered fr is the first in which dctrs are simply putting the gene-editr directly int patients and letting it find its wn way t the right gene in the right cells. In this case, it’s cells in the liver making the destructive prtein.
“It really is exciting,” says Dr. Julian Gillmre, wh is leading the study at the University Cllege Lndn, Ryal Free Hspital. “This has the ptential t cmpletely revlutinize the utcme fr these patients wh have lived with this disease in their family fr many generatins.” The patients will have t be fllwed lnger, and mre patients will have t be treated, t make sure the treatment’s safe, and determine hw much it’s helping. Gillmre stresses.
The prmising results ptentially pen the dr fr using the same apprach t treatment f many ther, mre cmmn diseases fr which taking cells ut f the bdy r directly injecting CRISPR isn’t realistic, including heart disease and brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Mst f us are familiar with the cncept f six degrees f separatin — the idea is that anyne in the planet can be cnnected t anyne else in just six steps. But is there actually any science t back up this cmmnly cited thery?
If yu just take a lk at the fllwing numbers, the six degrees f separatin idea seems pretty plausible. Assuming everyne knws at least 44 peple, and that each f thse peple knws an entirely new 44 peple, and s n, the math shws that in just six steps everyne culd be cnnected t 446, r 7.26 billin peple — mre than are alive n Earth tday.
But this idea wasn’t scientifically tested until the 1960s, when a psychlgist sent 300 packages ut t peple in Nebraska and Bstn, and asked them t use their netwrks t get them back t ne specific target — a stckbrker (股票经纪人) living in Bstn. They weren’t asked t frward it t him directly, but t send it t smene they knew n a first name basis, with instructins fr that persn t frward it n t smene in their netwrk that they thught might knw the stckbrker.
Only 64 f thse packages actually reached the target, with an average path length f just 5.2 intermediary (中间人) cnnectins, and this experiment was used as evidence fr six degrees f separatin, r the “small wrld phenmenn”, as the researcher called it.
But Derek Muller, a researcher, dug a little deeper, and fund that, f the riginal 300 packages, 100 were sent t peple already living in Bstn (where the target als lives) and 100 were sent t stckbrkers wh shared a prfessin with the target, s there were really nly 100 purely randm packages sent ut. And f thse 100, nly 18 made it back t the target. “S we’re talking abut a sample size f 18 — that’s all the evidence there was fr six degrees f separatin,” Derek explains.
12. What des the underlined wrd “plausible” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Reasnable.B. Absurd.C. Unbelievable.D. Original.
13. Hw were the subjects expected t get the package t the target in the experiment?
A. By entrusting the delivery t 5.2 intermediaries.
B. By delivering it in persn as quickly as pssible.
C. By passing it n t the target in the shrtest time.
D. By frwarding it in the shrtest intermediary-chain.
14. What can be inferred frm Dereck’s remark?
A. The cncept didn’t exist at all.
B. The experiment prvided slid evidence.
C. The sample size was t small t be useful.
D. The experiment was carried ut scientifically.
15. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
A. Hw t Play Six Degrees f Separatin in Our Real Life?
B. Six Degrees f Separatin: An Thery Funded by Derek
C. Are We Really All Cnnected by Six Degrees f Separatin?
D. Six Degrees f Separatin: Scientists Find a Smaller Number
