Kyra Peralte thught keeping a diary during the pandemic (流行病) might help her srt ut her feelings. In April 2020, the mther f tw in Mntclair, New Jersey, nw 46, started writing abut the challenges f wrk, marriage and mtherhd during a glbal crisis. Australian magpies (喜鹊) are cmmn in Australia, lved and feared in equal measure. The fear arises frm the fact that nesting females aggressively dive at animals-including, r perhaps especially, humans-ften drawing bld. And als, they seem rather clever. Nw, research by zlgists at the University f Wester Australia has crrbrated this-but their levels f intelligence are dependent n the size f the grup they belng t.
T reach this cnclusin, the Australian scientist examined 56 birds frm 14 grups f wild magpies living in the suburbs f Western Australia’s capital city, Perth. The grups ranged between 3 and. 12 individuals. Each magpie-tested separately t avid the risk f it getting help frm its mates-was put thrugh fur tasks that tested its cgnitive(认知的)abilities. These included finding fd hidden in a transparent cntainer, finding fd hidden in differently clred cntainers, and a memry test invlving finding hidden fd. Adult and yung birds were tested repeatedly and the results were clear. The birds that lived in larger grups were quicker t master the tasks than thse that lived in smaller nes. The difference between intelligent big grup members and less intelligent little grup members appeared very early in the birds’ lives.
In a paper published in the jurnal Nature, lead authr Benjamin Ashtn and his clleagues reprt that birds living in large grups “shw increased cgnitive perfrmance”. Mrever, this “general intelligence factr”is strngly linked t reprductive (生殖的)success in females.
Ashtn suggests that the findings indicate the evlutin f intelligence is influenced by pressures present in a cmplex scial grup. “Our results suggest that the scial envirnment plays a key rle in the develpment f cgnitin, ” he says.

Officials at Nrthland Pines Schl District are wrking with a tech cmpany called Spky Actin n a prgram t allw students t use the Internet thrugh drnes (无人机).
Abut 10 percent f Nrthland Pines students dn’t have any Internet access at hme, and as many as 40 percent have pr cnnectin speeds which hardly meet the demands f hme learning. District leaders have tried fr mre than ten years t clse that gap, but there are n easy slutins. “We’re a district f abut 500 square miles and getting Internet cnnect in fr every family is a challenge,” says Harlan Leusink, the directr f technlgy fr the district.
The prgram will use drnes that are cnnected t a pwer surce n the grund and that can stay in the air fr weeks and even mnths. The drnes will serve as flying cell twers. Hwever, the purpse f designing drnes had nthing t d with the educatin but it was related t disasters. “A hurricane cmes in and blws dwn all yur cell twers; it’s pretty easy t put up a flying cell twer,” Rahul Tiwari, Spky Actin’s CEO, says. “It’s nt necessary t replace a cell twer. The idea is t quickly meet the Internet needs f a cmmunity withut having t build a millin cell twers everywhere.”
While the drnes can stay in the air fr mre than a mnth, that’s nt usually necessary when they prvide the Internet fr students. Tiwari says the drnes will be active during peak (高峰) class and hmewrk times and wn’t be flying vernight.

The grups ranged between 3 and. 12 individuals. Each magpie-tested separately t avid the risk f it getting help frm its mates-was put thrugh fur tasks that tested its cgnitive(认知的)abilities. These included finding fd hidden in a transparent cntainer, finding fd hidden in differently clred cntainers, and a memry test invlving finding hidden fd. Adult and yung birds were tested repeatedly and the results were clear. The birds that lived in larger grups were quicker t master the tasks than thse that lived in smaller nes. The difference between intelligent big grup members and less intelligent little grup members appeared very early in the birds’ lives.
In a paper published in the jurnal Nature, lead authr Benjamin Ashtn and his clleagues reprt that birds living in large grups “shw increased cgnitive perfrmance”. Mrever, this “general intelligence factr”is strngly linked t reprductive (生殖的)success in females.

Hwever, the purpse f designing drnes had nthing t d with the educatin but it was related t disasters. “A hurricane cmes in and blws dwn all yur cell twers; it’s pretty easy t put up a flying cell twer,” Rahul Tiwari, Spky Actin’s CEO, says. “It’s nt necessary t replace a cell twer. The idea is t quickly meet the Internet needs f a cmmunity withut having t build a millin cell twers everywhere.”
While the drnes can stay in the air fr mre than a mnth, that’s nt usually necessary when they prvide the Internet fr students. Tiwari says the drnes will be active during peak (高峰) class and hmewrk times and wn’t be flying vernight.
