Failure is prbably the mst exhausting experience a persn ever has There is nthing mre tiring than nt succeeding.
We experience this tiredness in tw ways: as start-up fatigue(疲惫) and perfrmance fatigue. In the frmer case, we keep putting ff a task because it has either t bring r t difficult. And the lnger we delay it, the mre tired we feel.
Such start-up fatigue is very real, even if nt actually physical, nt smething in ur muscles and bnes. The slutin is bvius thugh perhaps nt easy t apply: always handle the mst difficult jb first.
Years ag, I was asked t write 102 essays n the great ideas f sme famus authrs. Applying my wn rule, I determined t write them in alphabetical(按字母顺序), never letting myself leave ut a tugh idea. And I always started the day’s wrk with the difficult task f essay-writing. Experience prved that the rule wrks.
Perfrmance fatigue is mre difficult t handle. Thugh willing t get started, we cannt seem t d the jb right. Its difficulties appear s great that, hwever hard we wrk, we fail again and again. In such a situatin, I wrk as hard as I can-then let the uncnscius take ver.
When planning Encyclpaedia Britannica (《大英百科全书》), I had t create a table f cntents based n the tpics f its articles. Nthing like this had ever been dne befre, and day after day I kept cming up with slutins, but nne f them wrked. My fatigue became almst unbearable.
One day, mentally exhausted, I wrte dwn all the reasns why this prblem culd nt be slved. I tried t cnvince myself that the truble was with the prblem itself, nt with me. Relived, I sat back in an easy chair and fell asleep.
An hur later, I wke up suddenly with the slutin clearly in mind. In the weeks that fllwed, the slutin which had cme up in my uncnscius mind prvided crrect at every step. Thugh I wrked as hard as befre, I felt n fatigue. Success was nw as exciting as failure had been depressing.
Human beings, I believe must try t succeed. Success, then, means never feeling tired.

The traffic signals alng Factria Bulevard in Bellevue, Washingtn, generally dn't flash the same length f green twice in a rw, especially at rush hur. At 9:30am, the full red/yellw/green signal cycle might be 140 secnds. By 9:33am, a burst f additinal traffic might push it t 145 secnds. Less traffic at 9:37am culd push it dwn t 135. Just like the traffic itself, the timing f the signals changes.
That is by design. Bellevue, a fast-grwing city just east f Seattle, uses a system that is gaining ppularity arund the US: intersectin(十字路口) signals that can adjust in real time t traffic cnditins. These lights, knwn as adaptive signals, have led t significant declines in bth the truble and cst f travels between wrk and hme.
“Adaptive signals can make sure that the traffic demand that is there is being addressed, ” says Alex Stevanvic, a researcher at Flrida Atlantic University.
Fr all f Bellevue’s success, adaptive signals are nt a cure-all fr jammed radways. Kevin Balke, a research engineer at the Texas A&M University Transprtatin Institute, says that while smart lights can be particularly beneficial fr sme cities, thers are s jammed that nly a sharp reductin in the number f cars n the rad will make a meaningful difference. “It’s nt ging t fix everything, but adaptive signals have sme benefits fr smaller cities,” he says.
In Bellevue, the switch t adaptive signals has been a lessn in the value f welcming new appraches. In the past, there was ften an autmatic reactin t increased traffic: just widen the rads, says Mark Pch, the Bellevue Transprtatin Department’s traffic engineering manager. Nw he hpes that ther cities will cnsider making their streets run smarter instead f just making them bigger.
9. What des the underlined wrd “that” in paragraph 2 refer t?
A. Increased length f green lights.B. Shrtened traffic signal cycle.
C. Flexible timing f traffic signals.D. Smth traffic flw n the rad.
10. What des Kevin Balke say abut adaptive signals?
A. They wrk better n brad rads.
B. They shuld be used in ther cities.
C. They have greatly reduced traffic n the rad.
D. They are less helpful in cities seriusly jammed.
11. What can we learn frm Bellevue’s success?
A. It is rewarding t try new things.B. The ld methds still wrk tday.
C. It pays t put thery int practice.D. The simplest way is the best way.

Plastic-Eating Wrms
Humans prduce mre than 300 millin tns f plastic every year. Almst half f that winds up in landfills(垃圾填埋场), and up t 12 millin tns pllute the ceans. S far there is n effective way t get rid f it, but a new study suggests an answer may lie in the stmachs f sme hungry wrms.
Researchers in Spain and England recently fund that the wrms f the greater wax mth can break dwn plyethylene, which accunts fr 40% f plastics. The team left 100 wax wrms n a cmmercial plyethylene shpping bag fr 12 hurs, and the wrms cnsumed and brke dwn abut 92 milligrams, r almst 3% f it. T cnfirm that the wrms’ chewing alne was nt respnsible fr the plyethylene breakdwn, the researchers made sme wrms int paste(糊状物) and applied it t plastic films. 14 hurs later the films had lst 13% f their mass — apparently brken dwn by enzymes (酶) frm the wrms’ stmachs. Their findings were published in Current Bilgy in 2017.
Federica Bertcchini, c-authr f the study, says the wrms’ ability t break dwn their everyday fd — beeswax — als allws them t break dwn plastic. "Wax is a cmplex mixture, but the basic bnd in plyethylene, the carbn-carbn bnd, is there as well, "she explains, "The wax wrm evlved a methd r system t break this bnd. "
Jennifer DeBruyn, a micrbilgist at the University f Tennessee, wh was nt invlved in the study, says it is nt surprising that such wrms can break dwn plyethylene. But cmpared with previus studies, she finds the speed f breaking dwn in this ne exciting. The next step, DeBruyn says, will be t identify the cause f the breakdwn. Is it an enzyme prduced by the wrm itself r by its gut micrbes(肠道微生物)?
Bertcchini agrees and hpes her team’s findings might ne day help emply the enzyme t break dwn plastics in landfills. But she expects using the chemical in sme kind f industrial prcess — nt simply "millins f wrms thrwn n tp f the plastic."
12. What can we learn abut the wrms in the study?
A. They take plastics as their everyday fd.
B. They are newly evlved creatures.
C. They can cnsume plastics.
D. They wind up in landfills.
13. Accrding t Jennifer DeBruyn, the next step f the study is t .
A. identify ther means f the breakdwn
B. find ut the surce f the enzyme
C. cnfirm the research findings
D increase the breakdwn speed
14. It can be inferred frm the last paragraph that the chemical might .
A. help t raise wrms
B. help make plastic bags
C. be used t clean the ceans
D. be prduced in factries in future
15. What is the main purpse f the passage?
A. T explain a study methd n wrms.
B. T intrduce the diet f a special wrm.
C. T present a way t break dwn plastics.
D. T prpse new means t keep ec-balance.
