北京四合院（Curtyard huse）是由东、西、南、北四面房子围合起来形成的内院式住宅。北京四合院作为老北京人世代居住的主要建筑形式，驰名中外。四合院的典型特征是外观规矩，中线对称，往大了扩展，就是皇宫、王府，往小了缩，就是平民百姓的住宅。
窑洞（Cave hme）是黄土高原的产物，陕北农民的象征。在这里，沉积了古老的黄土地深层文化、人民创造了陕北民间的窑洞艺术。由于自然环境、地貌特征和地方风土的影响，窑洞形成各式各样的形式。但从建筑的布局结构形式上划分可归纳为靠崖式、下沉式和独立式三种。
蒙古包（Mnglian tent）是反映北方游牧民族生产和生活方式的地方性建筑，对此已经有民俗学和建筑学等视角的研究。蒙古包建筑从材料到结构以及形状，不同于中国江南的园林建筑和宫殿建筑，与现代的房屋建筑更有天壤之别，把它看作是草原文化的象征。
现代公寓（Mdern apartment）为集合式住宅的一种，指的是一种生活设施齐备，但只占建筑一部分的居住形态。公寓是城市特有的现象。在古罗马时代已经有古罗马公寓（insula），供平民阶级居住。
