I’ve been wndering hw kids themselves, especially yung nes, define(定义) play. It turns ut that there have been quite a few research studies in which yung children are asked in varius ways t distinguish between play and nt play. In a review f 12 such studies, Natasha Gdhall and Cathy Atkinsn (2019) cncluded that even very yung children have a rather clear idea f the difference between play and nn-play. Mst imprtant fr the present discussin, a key characteristic f play fr children is that it is chsen and directed by the children themselves.
As ne example f such a study, Justine Hward and her clleagues (2006) shwed children pictures f ther kids invlved in varius activities and asked them t judge each as “play” r “nt play.” It turned ut that the mst reliable indicatr fr the children was the presence r absence f an adult. If an adult (generally seen t be a teacher) was present, the activity was mst ften judged as “nt play,” even if the children lked happy and invlved. Children were als mre likely t judge an activity as play if there was mre than ne child invlved than if a single child was ding smething alne.
Hward and her clleagues (2006) als reviewed previus research n children’s understanding f play and cncluded that, all in all, children cnsider an activity t be play if it is cntrlled by the children, is enjyable, has n preset gal, and invlves pretense. Yay! This list matches reasnably well with the list I generated based n the wrk f ther play researchers and my wn bservatins. I’m apparently nt t far ff the mark.
Unfrtunately, many educatin specialists wh have heard that play is gd fr children’s learning dn’t understand what play is. They develp “play-based learning” prgrams that g against the first characteristic f play because they are chsen and set up by the teacher and are mre-r-less frced upn the children rather than freely chsen by them. Once the first characteristic is destryed, the thers are als generally destryed.
I think it is hard fr teachers t prvide much real play fr children, because that means giving up cntrl. Mrever, stepping back and letting the children d their wn thing may lk like laziness r negligence(疏忽) t adult bservers.
    24. Which f the fllwing is mre likely t be regarded as play by children?
    A. Activities filled with jys and srrws.
    B. Activities directed by children themselves.
    C. Activities with the cmpany f their parents.
    D. Activities set up and mnitred by a teacher.
    25. What des the underlined sentence “I’m apparently nt t far ff the mark” in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. I am ppsed t the mark.B. I am in the wrng directin.
    C. My finding is clse t the truth.D. My mark is beynd imaginatin.
    26. What is the prblem with “play-based learning” prgrams?
    A. Children can nt chse them freely.
    B. The benefits f the prgrams are ignred.
    C. Nt all the children are invlved in the activities.
    D. What children d ges against the rules f the games.
    27. What des the text mainly talk abut?
    A. Hw children define play.
    B. Why play matters fr children.
    C. Hw specialists design play-based learning.
    D. Why play-based learning is imprtant t children.
    C
Cmpanies use mre and mre data t imprve hw artificial intelligence (AI) recgnizes images, learns languages and carries ut ther cmplex tasks. Hwever, unlike the human brain, when AI learns smething new, it tends t frget infrmatin it’s already learned. A recent study wants t find ut a way t help AI take in new data like the human brain, helping Al keep learning ver time.
“Our brains can cntinuusly learn thrughut ur lives. We’ve created an artificial platfrm fr machines t learn thrughut their lives,” said Shriram Ramanathan, a prfessr at Purdue University.
Unlike the human brain, which cnstantly frms new cnnectins between nerve cells t enable learning, the circuits (线路) n a cmputer chip dn’t change. A circuit that a machine has been using fr years isn’t any different frm the circuit that was riginally built fr the machine in a factry. “If we want t build a cmputer r a machine that is inspired by the brain, we must make it have the ability t cntinuusly prgram,” Ramanathan said.
In their study, Ramanathan and his team built a new piece f hardware that can be reprgrammed n demand. The hardware is a small device made f a special material, which is very sensitive t hydrgen(氢). Applying electrical pulses (电子脉冲) at different vltages (电压) allws the device t shake a cncentratin f hydrgen ins (离子) in matter f nansecnds (a unit fr measuring time), creating states that the researchers fund culd be mapped ut t crrespnd t functins f the brain. When the device has mre hydrgen near its center, it can act as a single nerve cell. With less hydrgen at that lcatin, the device serves as a synapse (突触), a cnnectin between nerve cells, which is what the brain uses t stre memry in cmplex neural circuits.
Thrugh experiments, the researchers shwed that the internal physics f this device creates a dynamic structure fr an artificial neural netwrk. As new prblems are presented, a dynamic netwrk can “pick and chse” circuits that are the fittest t address prblems.
The researchers are wrking t demnstrate these cncepts n large-scale test chips that wuld be used t build a brain-inspired cmputer.
    28. What is the purpse f the new study?
    A. T help AI cpe with cmplex tasks.
    B. T help AI wrk like the human brain.
    C. T enable AI t fllw the instructins better.
    D. T find ways t explre human’s learning ability.
    29. What mainly influences AI’s learning ability?
    A. Its changing cnnectin.B. Its limited strage capacity.
    C. Its fixed chip circuit.D. Its randm data input.
    30. What is mainly talked abut in the furth paragraph?
    A. The feature f the device.B. The difficulties f the study.
    C. The influence f the hardware.D. The backgrund f the research.
    31. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the text?
    A. T intrduce a new advance in AI.
    B. T shw the prmising future f AI.
    C. T explre the mystery f human brains.
    D. T explain the limitatins f current cmputer systems.

The streets f Lndn are infamusly clrful, and even mre s nw that sme lcal authrities have decided t dress up pedestrian crssings in clrs r ther equally bright designs. Sme f these “clrful crssings” are created by cuncils arund the UK with mre than just aesthetics (美学) in mind, fcusing instead n preventing pedestrian casualties (伤亡人员).
Tw cities in England that have just finished a pilt experiment are Liverpl and Hull. Befre the experiment, the frmer had 99 adult pedestrian deaths r serius injuries per 100,000 peple in 2019, making it the wrst place in the UK that year, while in Hull 44 pedestrian casualties per 100,000 peple were recrded.
“We call these clrful crssings a push because in an urban envirnment, pedestrians have a chice abut where they crss the rad,” says Dr. Hlly Hpe Smith, the cnsultant wrking n the tw trials. “We’re trying t enhance a crssing that’s already there s that peple are mre likely t use it”
While Dr. Hly Hpe Smith said that there had been little in terms f internatinal research int clrful crssings, in 2004, research frm Australian academics cncluded that clred surfaces f crssings had a psitive effect n pedestrian safety with regard t the number f crashes and the severity f injuries suffered by pedestrians. They recmmended that they be applied in “busy” and “cmplex” pedestrian envirnments. Mre recently, a 2017 reprt by Better Bankside abut artwrk emplyed at crssings in Lndn’s Suthwark Street said, “Our wrk did make respndents use the crssing mre, and 68% tld us that the artwrk made them experience mre pleasure.”
Yet, bright clrs aren’t fr everyne. Peple suffering frm autism (自闭症) have raised cncerns ver the nature f having several clrs n a rad, while guide dg wners have reprted their assistance dgs being cnfused by the new rad designs. “Clrful crssings can be really misleading fr peple with lw visin and their guide dgs,” says Dr. Amy Kavanagh, a blind activist and campaigner. But Hpe Smith desn’t agree. “These crssings are placed t enhance existing pedestrian crssings. All the signals that are there fr visually disadvantaged rad users remain — the tuch sensrs, the audi signal fr when the crssing is n — we haven’t tuched them,” he says.
    32. What d the figures in paragraph 2 shw?
    A. Liverpl and Hull shuld try t imprve their traffic system.
    B. The ppulatins f Liverpl and Hull had a significant decline.
    C. Pedestrians in Liverpl and Hull suffered frm rad accidents.
    D. The experiment in Liverpl and Hull was limited by many factrs.
    33. What des Dr. Hlly Hpe Smith try t d using clrful crssings?
    A. T cmfrt peple suffering frm autism.
    B. T ffer pedestrians mre traveling chices.
    C. T aruse peple’s traffic safety awareness.
    D. T encurage peple t use crssings mre.
    34. What can we learn abut clrful crssings arund the UK?
    A. They have met with cnflicting pinins.
    B. They have been supprted by dg wners.
    C. They need t be imprved further by designers.
    D. They have effectively reduced pedestrian casualties.
    35. What is the best title fr the text?
    A. Can clrful crssings give us mre pleasure?
    B. Will clrful crssings make ur streets safer?
    C. Why are clrful crssings used arund the UK?
    D. Hw can clrful crssings influence pedestrians?

Previusly published research suggested that children’s participatin in rganized sprts might help prtect against mental health difficulties. 36 S mre detailed research is needed t determine which appraches t sprts might be mst beneficial.
37 Their parents and guardians (监护人)reprted n several aspects f the children’s mental health by filling ut a frm knwn as the Child Behavir Checklist. The researchers lked fr sme assciatins between the mental health data and the kids’ sprts habits, while als accunting fr ther factrs that might impact mental health, such as husehld incme and verall physical activity.
38 It is reprted that kids invlved in team sprts were less likely t have signs f anxiety, depressin, withdrawal(孤僻),scial prblems, and attentin prblems.
The researchers als expected individual sprts t be assciated with fewer mental health difficulties. 39 The analysis shwed that children wh exclusively(仅仅)played individual sprts tended t have greater mental health difficulties than thse wh did nt play sprts at all. Nnetheless, fr female kids, participatin in bth team and individual sprts was assciated with a lwer pssibility f rule-breaking behaviur than nn-sprts participatin.
The authrs added, “Children and adlescents wh played exclusively team sprts had fewer mental health difficulties. Children wh participated in nly individual sprts had mre mental health difficulties.” 40
    A. Instead, they came t the ppsite cnclusin.
    B. The analysis is in line with the researchers’ expectatins.
    C. Their aim was t see if there exists a link between the tw.
