Feeling good and having humor in our lives can do wonders for our position and productivity, which means that there is definitely a place for some humor on the job. Think about the last time you did something that you found difficult. Was it working out a puzzle or working hard on your math homework? Can you remember the expression you had on your face? Most people will press their lips together and frown when they are doing something they find difficult. This is normally seen as a sign of effort. Now we’ve found that it can also say more than that.
A recent study at the University of Portsmouth in England suggests that the human expression of effort and frustration is our way of asking others for help. Scientists at the university gave children and chimps an impossible puzzle to work out. When the children couldn’t work out the puzzle, their faces expressed determination and effort. The chimps did not. Humans and chimps, however, have many facial expressions that share the same meaning. A human smile is the same as a chimp showing its teeth in happiness. Scientists believe that over time, humans have evolved(进化) to use this facial expression to ask for help. We have also learned to respond to it by offering help.
According to Dr Albert Mehrabian, a well-known professor of psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), only 7% of human communication happens through words and 55% is through body language. Therefore, understanding expressions is second nature to human beings.
With this in mind, next time you see a person with a frustrated expression, listen to your heart and stop to lend them a hand.

For a long time, comedy has been referred to as a profession for men only. But this has changed in recent years. Many female comics have made themselves outstanding on the stage not by ignoring the issues of gender (性别) inequality, but by bringing them to light.
Yang Li, 28, a stand-up comedy for about three years, focuses on the difficulties females face. For example, recently she bitingly joked about how women are represented in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “In the film, The Avengers, there are six heroes, and only one of them is a woman, whose superpower is the ability to slow down her aging. How exactly can she be designed to save the world by surviving until all the bad guys die?” she said.
Despite getting more important roles, women still face challenges in the comedy industry. “I’ve found that the audience tend to be more judgmental about a female comedian’s appearance,” said Yang Mengqi, an outstanding comic. To avoid unwelcome attention, female comics have to be especially smart in choosing what clothes they wear to perform.
The other challenge is that females are sometimes taken less seriously, despite plenty of evidence of their talent and dedication in the field with males in the majority. Maple Zuo is a comic who performs in both English and Mandarin. “It’s hard to fit in when I’m the only female comedian at a show.” said Zuo, who has toured internationally. “Every time there’s a comedy scene party, they are naturally divided up into two groups: one for the male comics, the other for their girlfriends, she said. “I always end up hanging out with the girlfriends.”
Even so, many Chinese female comics feel optimistic about their future. Yang said, “When people ask what has motivated me to stick with stand-up comedy, my response is simple: I hope to use whatever influence I have to improve gender equality.”

Helping Parents with Housework
Seeing that my parents were occupied with their work and looked exhausted during the weekdays, I felt that they deserved a good rest. Therefore, I made up my mind to help them with housework last Sunday.
Finding each room in our house was in a mess, I couldn’t wait to make some changes. Several pieces of wet cloths were used to clean cupboards, desks, and chairs, which made it possible for each set of furniture to appear new. Meanwhile, books and toys thrown here and there were also put into proper places according to their types so that the room looked neat and tidy. After doing that, tired as I was, mopping the floor was considered a good chance for me to exercise physically, and as a result of taking the task seriously, it looked as if a big mirror appeared. When the lunchtime approached, What brightened me most was that I made dumplings successfully under my parents’ guidance, making me eat each mouthful of the dumplings with great enjoyment after they were cooked well.
Thanks to doing housework, not only do I realize how hard it is for my parents to look after me after a day’s work, but also I am convinced that I have the ability to perform my duty well as a family member! What a meaningful day!

Think about the last time you did something that you found difficult. Was it working out a puzzle or working hard on your math homework? Can you remember the expression you had on your face? Most people will press their lips together and frown when they are doing something they find difficult. This is normally seen as a sign of effort. Now we’ve found that it can also say more than that.
A recent study at the University of Portsmouth in England suggests that the human expression of effort and frustration is our way of asking others for help. For a long time, comedy has been referred to as a profession for men only. But this has changed in recent years. Many female comics have made themselves outstanding on the stage not by ignoring the issues of gender (性别) inequality, but by bringing them to light.
Yang Li, 28, a stand-up comedy for about three years, focuses on the difficulties females face. Despite getting more important roles, women still face challenges in the comedy industry. “I’ve found that the audience tend to be more judgmental about a female comedian’s appearance,” said Yang Mengqi, an outstanding comic. To avoid unwelcome attention, female comics have to be especially smart in choosing what clothes they wear to perform.
The other challenge is that females are sometimes taken less seriously, despite plenty of evidence of their talent and dedication in the field with males in the majority. Maple Zuo is a comic who performs in both English and Mandarin. “It’s hard to fit in when I’m the only female comedian at a show.” said Zuo, who has toured internationally. “Every time there’s a comedy scene party, they are naturally divided up into two groups: one for the male comics, the other for their girlfriends, she said. “I always end up hanging out with the girlfriends.”

Helping Parents with Housework
Seeing that my parents were occupied with their work and looked exhausted during the weekdays, I felt that they deserved a good rest. Therefore, I made up my mind to help them with housework last Sunday.
Finding each room in our house was in a mess, I couldn’t wait to make some changes. Several pieces of wet cloths were used to clean cupboards, desks, and chairs, which made it possible for each set of furniture to appear new. Meanwhile, books and toys thrown here and there were also put into proper places according to their types so that the room looked neat and tidy. After doing that, tired as I was, mopping the floor was considered a good chance for me to exercise physically, and as a result of taking the task seriously, it looked as if a big mirror appeared. When the lunchtime approached, What brightened me most was that I made dumplings successfully under my parents’ guidance, making me eat each mouthful of the dumplings with great enjoyment after they were cooked well.
Thanks to doing housework, not only do I realize how hard it is for my parents to look after me after a day’s work, but also I am convinced that I have the ability to perform my duty well as a family member! What a meaningful day!
