A 16-year-old from Florida is a two-time state Geography Bee winner. Now a children’s book author, Kaylan is sharing his knowledge of the world with children across the state of Florida.
Kaylan’s love for geography started when he was about three years old. “I just had a love for looking at maps that we had when I was growing up,” he told me during a recent interview.
When Kaylan was in middle school, he won his state’s Geography Bee. He then advanced to the national competition, placing in the top 10 among students in the United States.
“It helps us to understand our world,” Kaylan said. “With that knowledge, so much can come from it.” Now a junior in high school, Kaylan said that having a basic understanding of our world allows us to create pioneering solutions to the challenges we face.
Although his competing days are over Kaylan hopes to inspire kids to learn more about geography through his new book series. Called Kobe’s World Adventure, the books follow the adventures of a boy named Kobe who travels the world with his family and learns new geographical facts along the way.
The first book is about Kobe and his family exploring the US. Young readers will find many of the facts Kaylan has learned over the years, along with colorful illustrations (插图). The second book of the six-book series will be published in fall.
Kaylan has also started an organization called Lending Hands Global Foundation. Through the nonprofit (非营利机构), he has been sharing copies of Kobe’s World Adventure with students in underserved communities in Florida. So far, he has donated about 1,500 books.
Kaylan recently read to a group of children at the Boys & Girls Club of Central Florida. He enjoys working with the nationwide organization, which provides after-school programs for kids. Seeing the kids’ responses to Kobe’s World Adventure was rewarding. “I can tell that some of the students that I’m reading to are picking up on the topic,” Kaylan said, “and building a love for it.”
    4. What can be learnt about Kaylan?
    A. He won Geography Bee in Florida twice.
    B. He set up Lending Hands Global Foundation to make money.

This winter, the state of California in the US received unusually large amounts of rain and snow. Now, people worry that some areas will flood as the snow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains melts (融化).
Ron Caetano lives about half-way between the cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco. He is preparing to leave in case his community, called the Island District, floods.
More than 100 years ago, the Island District area was under Tulare Lake, a large lake. At one time, Tulare Lake was the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. But reservoirs (水库) and watering systems for agriculture caused it to disappear. However, in very rainy years, farmland can still get covered with water.
Experts say reservoirs near the area will likely receive three times more water than they can hold this year. That means officials must increase the amount of water they release (释放) from the reservoirs. But if too much water is released, the area might flood.
The Island District has organized a community network to help prepare for floods. People are placing sandbags close to elderly neighbors’ houses to stop possible flooding. And they are looking at reports from water officials, county officials, and from each other.
California has had very dry weather in recent years. Therefore, both cities and farm communities acclaimed this year’s winter rains. If the weather gets warmer slowly, the snow will not melt quickly and there may be little or no flooding. But if the weather gets hot quickly, that will bring trouble from too much melting snow.
Officials announced plans to close parts of Yosemite National Park because of possible danger of flooding. The park is about 270 kilometers east of San Francisco in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Nicholas Pinter is with the University of California, Davis Center for Watershed Sciences. He said the lake’s size has always changed because of California’s weather. He described the surrounding area this way. “It has been an engineering problem all along,” he said. “This is a bathtub (浴缸) with no way out.”
    8. What made Tulare Lake disappear?
    A. Lack of rainfall. B. Natural disasters. C. Climate warming. D. Human behavior.
    9. What does the underlined word “acclaimed” in paragraph 6 mean?
    A. Feared. B. Doubted. C. Welcomed. D. Tracked.
    10. What might Californians want to see?
    A. The government can help them move to other states. B. The weather can get warm gradually in California.
    C. There is more rain in the cities than on farms. D. The officials release water on a regular basis.
    11. What can we infer from Nicholas Pinter’s words?
    A. It is difficult to deal with the flood. B. It is easy to keep the snow water.
    C. The surrounding area is unfit to live in. D. The lake is already overflowing.
    D
Humans spend about one third of their lives sleeping. But some mammals (哺乳动物), like the northern elephant seal, survive with much less sleep.
Researchers in a new study described the unusual sleep pattern of these ocean animals. They found that when these mammals go to feed on trips that can last seven months, they sleep just two hours each day. Those two hours of sleep are made up of short moments of rest lasting only 10 minutes each as they dive deep to avoid predators (捕食者). The only other mammals known to get so little sleep are African elephants.
The researchers placed a head covering with sensors (传感器) on the heads of the seals that they studied. The sensors recorded sleep signals created by the seals’ brains and heart rate. The sensors also recorded the animals’ location and depth beneath the sea. Female seals go out on longer open-ocean trips while males only feed in coastal waters. Because of this, the researchers only studied female seals.
During dives lasting about 30 minutes, the seals went into a deep sleep called slow-wave sleep while keeping a controlled downward movement. When they then experienced rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep, the seals fell into a turning pattern. Then, at the deepest point of their sleeping dive—up to 377 meters deep—they wake up and swim back to the surface.
Terrie Williams is a scientist at the University of California at Santa Cruz who helped write the study. She said, “It is remarkable that a wild animal will fall into deep, paralytic REM sleep when there are predators on the hunt.” She added that the seals solve this problem by going into deep sleep in the deep parts of the oceans where predators usually do not hunt them.
Williams said the brain’s ability to control awakening the sleeping seals at a depth before they drown is also a discovery about how mammalian brains work. She commented on this, saying that it shows the survival control of the seals’ brains.
    12. Why did researchers only study female elephant seals?
    A. They like living in groups more than males. B. They are more friendly to humans.
    C. They are more convenient to follow. D. They go to feed on longer trips.
    13. What were the elephant seals doing when they were in deep sleep?
    A. Falling into deeper sea. B. Swimming fast in the sea.
    C. Moving back to the surface. D. Breathing deeply and slowly.
    14. What’s the advantage of elephant seals’ sleep in the deep parts of the oceans?
    A. They hunt for more food. B. They avoid being hunted.
    C. They get completely relaxed. D. They control their sleep pattern.
    15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. Different Animals Need Different Sleep
B Short Sleep Helps Elephant Seals Move Deeper into Sea
    C. Female Elephant Seals Sleep Only Two Hours a Day
    D. Male and Female Elephant Seals Feed in Different Areas

It was a wonderful spring day. The Earth was finally awakening from her Winter sleep. New life was everywhere. The sky was clear and blue. The air smelled sweet. The sun was kissing the world with its warmth. It was already nearly 21℃.
I was driving to pick my son up from the workshop, where he works a few days a week. On my drive I saw various beautiful flowers in people’s yards. The fields were full of yellow dandelions (蒲公英) with some already turning into little white balls of seeds.
The trees were starting to awaken too. The blossoms on them were white, purple and pink. The songs of the birds were in the air as well. I was taking it all in and feeling the love from the creation all around me. I longed to be a part of it and share my love as well.
I pulled into the driveway of the workshop and parked my car. As I got out, I saw a lost little butterfly larva (幼虫) moving the wrong way towards the sidewalk. It was just about to go under my tire when I reached down and picked it up. I held it gently in my hand and walked over to the grassy hillside on the other side of the parking lot. Before I put it down, I said, “You will never become a butterfly if you get run over my friend. The best place you stay is the grass.”
Just then, it was time to leave work, and my son came out. As he saw me, he waved from the distance. I hurried to meet him, still holding the butterfly larva in my hand. When he saw what I had in my hand, he was very curious and asked me what I was holding. I told him and said I was going to put it back in the grass.

Although his competing days are over, Kaylan hopes to inspire kids to learn more about geography through his new book series. Called Kobe’s World Adventure, the books follow the adventures of a boy named Kobe who travels the world with his family and learns new geographical facts along the way.

D 9. C 10. B 11. A
根据第二段中“At one time, Tulare Lake was the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. But reservoirs (水库) and watering systems for agriculture caused it to disappear.( Tulare Lake曾经是密西西比河以西最大的淡水湖。但是水库和农业灌溉系统导致了它的消失。)”可知,由于水库和农业灌溉系统导致了Tulare Lake的消失,水库的建设以及农业灌溉系统与人类的行为有关。故选D。
    【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据划线词前面的句子“California has had very dry weather in recent years. (加州近年来天气非常干燥。)”以及划线词后面的内容“this year’s winter rains(今年冬天下雨)”可知,由于加利福尼亚近年来天气非常干燥,因此对于今年冬天的雨天是非常欢迎的。故划线词与C选项“Welcomed.(受到热情欢迎的)”为同义词。故选C。
    【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“If the weather gets warmer slowly, the snow will not melt quickly and there may be little or no flooding. But if the weather gets hot quickly, that will bring trouble from too much melting snow.(如果天气慢慢变暖,雪不会很快融化,可能很少或没有洪水。但是,如果天气迅速变热,将带来太多的积雪融化的麻烦。)”可知,如果天气慢慢变暖,很少会有洪水,但是如果天气迅速变热,雪融化会带来更大的麻烦如洪水的爆发。因此加利福尼亚的人们希望天气逐渐变暖。故选B。
    【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“ He said the lake’s size has always changed because of California’s weather. He described the surrounding area this way. “It has been an engineering problem all along,” he said. “This is a bathtub (浴缸) with no way out.”(他说,由于加利福尼亚的天气,湖泊的大小一直在变化。他是这样描述周围地区的。“这一直是一个工程问题,”他说。“这是一个没有排水口的浴缸。”)”可知,在Nicholas Pinter看来,由于受到加利福尼亚的天气影响,湖泊的大小一直在变化,由此可能造成的洪水问题愈发严重,因此这是一个系统性工程问题,就好似一个没有排水口的浴缸一样,由此推断当前很难去处理洪水的问题。故选A。
    B. Short Sleep Helps Elephant Seals Move Deeper into Sea
    C. Female Elephant Seals Sleep Only Two Hours a Day
    D. Male and Female Elephant Seals Feed in Different Areas
D 13. A 14. B 15. C

根据第三段“Female seals go out on longer open-ocean trips while males only feed in coastal waters. Because of this, the researchers only studied female seals.(雌海豹外出觅食的时间更长,而雄海豹只在沿海水域觅食。正因为如此,研究人员只研究了雌性海豹)”可知,研究人员只研究雌性象海豹是因为其外出觅食时间更长。故选D项。
    【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“During dives lasting about 30 minutes, the seals went into a deep sleep called slow-wave sleep while keeping a controlled downward movement.(在持续约30分钟的潜水中,海豹进入一种称为慢波睡眠的深度睡眠,同时保持有控制的向下运动)”可知,海象在深度睡眠的时候,会向更深处下沉。故选A项。
根据倒数第二段“She added that the seals solve this problem by going into deep sleep in the deep parts of the oceans where predators usually do not hunt them.(她补充说,海豹通过在海洋深处进入深度睡眠来解决这个问题,因为捕食者通常不会捕杀它们)”可知,海豹在海洋深处进行深度睡眠的时候,可以避开捕食者的捕杀。

    注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My son suggested taking the butterfly larva home to look after it.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The moment finally arrived when the larva was going to become a butterfly.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
My son suggested taking the butterfly larva home to look after it. I agreed and my son immediately set out to search for knowledge about raising butterflies. He searched the Internet and even turned to his biology teacher at school for help. He then created a suitable environment for the butterfly to grow at home and provided it with suitable food. With the careful care of my son, the larva grew larger day by day, and it was continually changing its color and shape.
The moment, finally arrived when the larva was going to become a butterfly. My son had been looking forward to this moment for a long time and we were excited to watch the changing process. An ugly larva at last changed into a beautiful butterfly. How amazing life is! From the first day of feeding the larva, my son made detailed records. Later, the biology teacher asked him to bring the butterfly to school and tell his classmates about the whole process. He was warmly welcomed by his classmates.
