As the crnavirus pandemic spread ut, the demand fr smell training therapy (疗法) stepped up, as ptentially millins f thse wh had COVID-19 experienced lsing their sense f smell.
Unlike sme ther viruses that can cause the lss f smell by directly infecting cells invlved in detecting smell, the virus that causes COVID-19 spares them. Instead, the crnavirus infects surrunding supprt cells. T defend the bdy against the virus, immune cells rush t this site f infectin and generate antiviral prteins, which then lead t the lss.
Apprximately 80% f COVID-19 patients wh had lst their sense f smell regained it withut any treatment within ne t fur weeks. But as three mnths went by, patient Chris Rgers’ situatin barely imprved, s he started t seek ut smell training therapy.
Twice a day fr 10 weeks, Rgers sniffed fur kinds f essential ils—rse, lemn, eucalyptus, and clve—t ptentially strengthen the survival f newly frmed smell-detecting cells r speed up their prductin and rebuild the cnnectin between his nse and brain. T assess whether this smell therapy was effective, the dctr asked Rgers t distinguish between a number f additinal smells befre and after the smell training. Rgers did the therapy fr 10 weeks and started nticing imprvements at week six. At least five mnths since the smell training ended, the imprvements can be mre like 75%.
While scientists have recrded imprvements in sme individuals’ ability t smell, it has been difficult t shw hw much f that imprvement cmes frm the therapy itself r natural recvery ccurring ver time, said Eric Hlbrk, a dctr at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Hspital. “But I cntinue t recmmend the therapy because such training culd speed up the healing prcess. Als, it’s ne f very few and ften the nly therapeutic ptins that’s available t millins f COVID-19 patients wh haven’t been able t regain their sense f smell fr mnths,” Eric Hlbrk added.
Althugh the benefits f smell training can vary cnsiderably amng patients, depending n their starting pint, “it is generally nt cnsidered harmful,” says Bradley Gldstein, a specialist studying at Duke University. “But we still need t find specific, mre effective drug therapies. It’s really an unmet need.”

B.T imprve the sensitivity f Rgers’ sense f smell.
C.T make Rgers remember the smell f cmmn il.
D.T rebuild the cnnectin between Rgers’ nse and brain.
26.Which wrd best describes Eric Hlbrk’s attitude t smell training therapy?

Yu carry 1.3 kg fatty substances in yur head that cntrls everything yu will ever d. This fantastic cntrl center lets yu think, learn, create, and feel emtins. It als cntrls everything yur bdy des. Yur brain has abut 100 billin tiny cells: neurns — it wuld take yu mre than 3,000 years if yu tried t cunt them all. Whenever yu dream, laugh, think, see r mve, tiny chemical and electrical signals are racing between these neurns alng billins f tiny neurn pathways. Yur neurns create and send mre messages than all the phnes in the entire wrld. And althugh a single neurn prduces nly a tiny amunt f electricity, all yur neurns tgether can prduce enugh electricity t pwer a light bulb.
