Beat Plastic Pollution
June 5th 2023 marks the 52nd World Environment Day. As students, it is imperative for us to reflect on the profound theme of this year — “Beat Plastic Pollution”.
Plastic pollution causes severe damage to our planet. Where there is human activity, there is plastic waste, which is affecting marine life, wildlife, and even human health. Moreover, dealing with plastic waste contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, worsening the climate crisis.
It’s high time that we took measures to address this issue. Not only should we reduce our plastic consumption, for example, by using cloth shopping bags and steel plates, but we should actively recycle, pick up plastic garbage and promote a culture of responsibility.
What makes a real difference is our daily effort. Let us rise to this challenge and make every day a World Environment Day.

Text 1
M: How is Uncle Jim’s farm? Does he still have all those goats he raised? I love watching them play in the mud with baby sheep.
W: Yes, he still has them. He just bought a bunch of female cattle for milking, too. (1) I learned how to do it!
Text 2
M: I assume you’re looking for a car that’s better on fuel. Your last one seemed like it needed to be filled often. I bet it was expensive.
W: Not really. It was a good car with a smooth ride. But I think this time I want something bigger, though. (2)
Text 3
M: Just keep in mind that I tried something new with this dish. If you don’t like it, please be honest.
W: I wouldn’t lie to you and say it was good, if it wasn’t. I love trying new food, but now you’re making me scared to taste it. (3)
Text 4
M: How much do you weigh? It can’t be a lot. You look pretty light, but you’re also very strong. I’ve seen you lift a lot of weight.
W: It’s rude to ask a lady how much she weighs! (4) I think you need some lessons in manners.
Text 5
W: I’m trying to plan this book I’m going to write. It’s hard to come up with material, though.
M: I don’t understand how someone could write a book. How can you have that much time? It always takes many weeks to write a whole book. (5)
Text 6 (第6题为推断题)
W: John, are you almost done? I was supposed to go home an hour ago. My mother and father don’t like it when I miss dinner.
M: I told you this wasn’t going to be quick, Janet. Yet, you wanted me to try and fix your computer today anyway. I’m doing it, but at this rate I won’t be finished before tonight. (7)
W: Can I just call you later to see if it’s finished? I’ll need it to do the homework for tomorrow’s class. (7)
M: Fine, but I am not going to come bring this to you when it’s done. I wish you would have waited until Friday to let me start this. I still have to do my homework for English class, too.
Text 7
W: We should buy Betty something to thank her. (9) (10) It was so nice of her to watch the dog while we went to Hawaii.
M: We just got back home, Liz. I’ve barely taken off my shoes and you want to go to the mall? I’m going upstairs to take a shower before I consider anything. (8)
W: Fine. Why don’t we just pay her some money then? It would have cost us about 300 dollars to have a professional take care of the dog. (9)
M: I’ll agree if you want to give her half that much. (9) It looks like she ate nearly 100 dollars’ worth of our food while she stayed here for the week.
W: That’s fair. I’ll take the money when I go there tomorrow. She left her jacket here, (10) so I was going to take that to her place.
Text 8
W: Can you help me find Jackson Avenue? (11) (12) (13) I just keep going around Front Street. I feel like I’m never going to find the way to my mother’s street! (11)
M: The whole area is closed off because of an open gas line. (12) It happened last night during the thunderstorm when a tree fell down. We removed the tree, but it damaged the road. (12) You’ll have to park here on Front Street and walk. (13) It’s right over there, but you should wait because it’s also dangerous right now. There are many workers and big machines that are busy trying to fix the problem. (12)
W: When will it open again? I have a lot of bags I need to take into my mother’s house.
M: They won’t be done until around 6:00 p.m. I think you should wait to take your bags because the walkways are closed. But I think you should still park here for the night because it will be closed again in the early morning, and you won’t be able to drive out. (13)
Text 9
W: Who do you think was the best basketball player of all time? (14)
M: Michael Jordan. (14) (15) He was amazing. Did you know that he was cut from his high school basketball team?
W: No, I didn’t.
M: His coach thought he was too short, but he kept growing. He went on to be a great star in college and in the league. Five times he was voted the Most Valuable Player, 14 times he was voted onto the all-star team, (14) (15) 10 times he scored more points in a season than any other player, and nine times he was voted the best player on defense. He also won two gold medals at the Olympics. (14)
W: Sounds like you are a big fan? (14)
M: Well, not really. (14) I liked another team, and he always beat them. But I was impressed by him. (14)
W: Is he still playing?
M: No, he’s way too old. He’s 57.
W: Do they have a senior league?
M: No, there is no senior league. At least, not a professional one.
W: Why not? People could see all their favorite stars.
M: In slow motion.
W: What does Michael Jordan do now? (16)
M: He owns a couple of businesses, like his own brand of clothing. (16) And he’s a part-owner of a basketball team.
W: Like most retired athletes. (16)
M: Actually, he does better than most retired players. Many don’t do well after they stop playing.
Text 10
Whale sharks are an amazing animal. They are considered to be both the largest fish and the largest sharks in the world. They can grow to be up to 12 meters in length and weigh up to 21 tons. For a comparison, the African elephant only weighs between two and seven tons. Whale sharks are unlike other sharks because they don’t attack people. (17) Instead, they feed on very small fish and sea creatures. They’re slow swimmers that usually live in the oceans of warm areas. They often travel very far for food as well. Scientists have been trying to figure out how to tell the ages of these sharks. However, scientists were not very successful for many years. This is because it’s harder to find older whale sharks. They are being overfished by humans who live in the areas where the whale sharks go to eat. (18) There was a success this past year, though. Scientists found a recently dead whale shark and created an interesting method to figure out its age. First, they take a sample from the bone. They’re then able to look at a very interesting mark. This mark is actually from the radiation of bomb tests during World War II. (19) By seeing where in the bone the radiation is, scientists can tell how old the adult whale shark is. They believe these sharks can live to be 100 years old or so. (20)

“满足”, 选项A ,C, D 的内容都代表成就,而选项B的内容代表满足。
27. C主旨大意题。作者回顾了她青少年时期观看流星的经历,以及这种经历如何影响她决 定在农场过独立的生活并让孩子接受家庭教育。她对比了成就感和满足感的概念,强调 了在简单的时刻和与大自然的联系中寻找意义和快乐的重要性。所以选项C “活出充实 的人生”正确。

七选五
36. D 选项中的代词them指代前文提到的cheeseburger,French fries等食物,这里将人们从 用订书钉封口的外卖袋中取出食物的过程比作选项中 “to reach into a shark’s mouth to get them out(从鲨鱼口中取食)”。
37. E第一段提到了从有订书钉的外卖袋中取食的危险性,而37题后提及 “We can rest confident that no one else has access to our meal before it arrives(我们可以放心,没有其他 人会接触到我们的食物).”,因此,可以看出,用订书钉给外卖袋封口的本意是好的, 故选E。
38. C从38题前 “And they pose yet another danger.”及38题后的 “ Believe me, you don’t want to eat a staple, especially not an open one.”可知,38题是关于误食订书钉的危险,故选C。
39. G 39题前提及 “the open staple … poses a danger to anyone who handles the bag after we throw it away(在我们扔掉外卖袋后,开口的订书钉会对处理袋子的人构成危险).” 因 此,G选项中的 “recycle”与上文 “throw it away”对应,且本段与前文并列描述了订书钉 的缺点,故选G。
40. B 40题位于文末,是对文章的总结,号召人们减少使用订书钉封外卖袋,故选B。
