Born on June 27,1872,Paul Laurence Dunbar was raised by his mother in Dayton, Ohio. While there, Dunbar attended Dayton Central High School. He was the only black student in his class. He served as editor in chief of the high school newspaper, as well as a member of the literary and drama clubs and debating society. Dunbar also became friends with a white classmate who, with his brother Wilbur, would later invent the airplane-Orville Wright. The two knew each other well.
The Wright brothers, who owned a printing press, were the initial publisher of Dunbar's writings, including the newspaper he started and edited in 1890. After high school, Dunbar’s and Wright's lives took different turns. Unable to find consistent pay for his writing, Dunbar did a variety of jobs, including as an elevator operator in a building.
Not one to miss a business opportunity, the 20-year-old sold his first book of poetry, Oak and Ivy, to passengers he met on the elevator. Dunbar found another job after moving to Washington, D.C., where he arranged shelves at the Library of Congress. According to his wife, Alice Moore Dunbar-Nelson, an accomplished writer in her own right, it was there that her husband began to think about the image of a caged bird.
Dunbar’s first break came when he was invited to recite his poems at the 1893 World's Fair, where he met the famous abolitionist(废奴主义者)Frederick Douglass. Impressed, Douglass gave Dunbar a job as a clerk, calling him the "the most promising young coloured man in America". Dunbar's second break came three years later. On his 24th birthday, he received a glowing review in Harper's Weekly of his second book of poetry, Majors and Minors.
His life didn’t last long. Diagnosed with tuberculosis(肺结核)in 1900,Dunbar died from the disease on February 9, 1906. But still, his work survives.

English has become the second language for the world. We are almost to a point where there are only two languages you need to know: whatever your parents speak and English. English has become so popular that it has spread very fast outside of the control of the US and UK. Countries like Nigeria and India use it as a unifying language in their nations. Some countries do all their schooling in English because the market just isn't there to translate textbooks into their own languages. English is the language of the Internet. It’s the language of finance, and it's the language of air traffic control. of popular music-English is everywhere.
The reason why I'm listing those things to you is that I can tell that we're getting to the point where a question is going to start being asked, which is: Why should English speakers learn foreign languages? Why bother to learn another one when it's getting to the point where almost everybody in the world will be able to communicate in English? I think there are a lot of reasons for English speakers to learn another language.
I first want to address the one that you're probably most likely to have heard of. And that is the idea that a language influences your thoughts, and that the vocabulary and the grammar of different languages give everybody a different kind of feelings. Secondly, if you want to learn a culture and become part of it, you have to control to some degree the language that the culture happens to be conducted in. There's no other way. The third reason is that it's been shown that if you speak two languages, dementia(痴呆)is less likely to set in. And these are the benefits of learning foreign languages.
So I recommend that you teach yourself languages other than the one that you're speaking, because there's never been a better time to do it. It will certainly blow your mind.
28.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 1?
A.Make an argument.
B.Draw a comparison.
C.Introduce the topic.
D.Give an example.
29.What is the author's attitude towards learning a second language?
A.Approving.
B.Dismissive.
C.Doubtful.
D.Unclear.
30.What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A.Language decides people's opinion.
B.Language and culture are closely related.
C.Vocabulary and grammar are difficult to learn.
D.Learning foreign languages helps cure disease.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.It's Time to Stop Learning English
B.Learning Language Is Learning Culture
C.How Does English Spread in the World
D.Why Should We Learn Another Language

The three astronauts of Shenzhou XIV mission, who played a key role in completing the Tiangong space station, shared their experiences and feelings with the public on Friday in the first news conference after their six-month orbital journey.
Speaking at the meeting with domestic reporters at the Astronaut Centre of China in Beijing, mission commander Senior Colonel Chen Dong said that every day during their mission was full of work. For example, they were tasked with preparing for and monitoring the arrival of the Wentian and Mengtian lab modules, and making three spacewalks.
Chen recalled the moment he and his teammates-Senior Colonel Liu Yang and Senior Colonel Cai Xuzhe-met their fellow astronauts in the Shenzhou XV flight inside the Tiangong station. “We had paid a lot of attention to news about the Shenzhou XV mission and the crew several days before they set out. When their spacecraft actually launched, we were watching the live broadcast and we were so happy that we kept clapping our hands for a long time. In the hours before their spacecraft arrived at the station, we were supposed to have a sleep but none of us really went to bed. The moment I was about to open the hatch after their spacecraft connected with the space station, I saw them through the window and I waved my hand to welcome them to our home, and theirs," he said.
Liu Yang, the first Chinese woman in space, said the Shenzhou XIV was her second spaceflight and she made a paper “lucky star" each day in the mission. Buying a new car is challenging. This is not surprising. A car is the second-most expensive purchase most people will ever make-after a home.36
Consumers should adopt long-term thinking. When doing car shopping, consumers are frequently looking to solve an immediate problem: Their car is breaking down, and they should buy a car immediately. 37 But, since a car is such a big purchase, it’s important to think about it from a long-term perspective(视角).“What works today may not be the best option for a few years down the line. So if you are considering starting a family in the future, you probably don't want to be buying a two-seat sports car,” Degen says.
38 Degen notes that consumers often only focus on the sticker price(定价)of the car and don't account for other key factors. “I think a surprising thing for a lot of car shoppers is, in the long run, a car that costs more initially may actually be less expensive to own over the years. This is because it might be more fuel efficient and might be easier to insure."39
The monthly payment isn't everything. Many car shoppers are on a budget and want their purchase to hit a certain monthly target. The problem here is that dealers can readily manipulate(操控)pricing and especially financing to achieve this target. 40 "If you go into a dealership and you give out a number for what you want your monthly payment to be, they might be able to get you to that number, but it might be a loan that's longer than you should really take out," Degen says." So, again, you really want to focus on the whole cost of the car and not just nailing a number. Don't concentrate just on th monthly payment.”
A.But this may result in other long-term issues.
B.Long-term thinking applies to the vehicle cost as well.
C.This often causes them to solve the problem right away.
D.Consumers should have a quick mind in buying a car.
E. It's important to use tools that analyze the total cost of owing the car.
F.So Matt Degen, KBB's senior editor gives tips on buying a new car.
G.Therefore, it's of great importance to set a target before a car shopping.

I sat down at one of the tables in the dinning hall to eat my lunch and made my usual call to my dad.
"Hi, Tina!" He answered the phone as he always did.
"Hi, Dad! How is your day going?" I inquired.
"Same, same. Just another day at the shop. Brake job and oil change now. I’m repairing a sports car. Have an alternator(交流发电机)to work on next. How about you?”
“Same, just another day. Glad it's Friday. Definitely ready for the weekend,” I said with relief. Only a few more hours and we would have an entire weekend to spend together.
“Oh, yeah. I got you a present from work today!" he said, with great excitement in his voice.
“Oh, really?”
“Yes! I just know you will love it. I can't wait to see you in a few hours,” he said excitedly on the other end of the phone. “Excited to see you soon!” I said before we hung up.
When I got home, my dad immediately presented the gift he had gotten me from work, I was excited yet curious at the same time; after all, my dad was a mechanic. What kind of gift would he have gotten for me from one of his tool boxes? He had me cover my eyes, and when I opened them, he handed me a black bag. I opened it and did not understand what was inside.
"Uh, what is it?"
"It‘s a jumper(跨接线)box!”he said. “You can keep it in your car. If your battery ever dies, you don't need another car to start yours. This will jump(跨接引线启动)your battery for you, all by itself!” He was explaining to me how it worked, just like a child showing me a new toy at Christmas. "Come on outside, and I will show you how it works!" He went out of the door as the telephone rang. “I'll be right out!" I called out the door to him as he unlocked the car, and I ran to answer the phone. It was my mother.
