Having spent more than a decade on the dance floor, ROME---Niccolo Filippi, a 23-year-old Italian dance performer, recently decided to explore Chinese culture and its traditional dance forms and believes that this experience will not only boost his career, but also broaden his horizons beyond the world of dance.
His interest in diversifying his skills grew after he stumbled upon a short video of traditional Chinese-styled dance on YouTube. "I saw it as an art that combines tradition and modernity, which was mostly the reason why I liked it," says Filippi.
Ever since, he has been closely following Chinese dance performers and watching numerous videos to learn more about the traditional style that he admires. "I prefer the traditional style because of its light movements. It also reflects my personality with elegance," he adds.
Filippi's chance came when he was invited to perform for a Chinese New Year celebration in the central Italian city of Florence. He has since fully committed himself to the art form, learning several pieces and putting his newfound passion into practice.
"The biggest difference that I found is the change of mood and emotional expressions among dances," says Filippi, adding that he needed to shift from the dynamic moves of hip-hop to the graceful and fluid movements of Chinese dance. Despite various obstacles, Filippi's efforts have not gone unnoticed.
Two of his friends shared videos of his performances on social media, and the response was overwhelming. One video garnered 500,000 views, while the other received 200,000 views.
Filippi believes that learning about different cultures is priceless, and he sees it as a means of personal growth. "I like to think of a person as a book," he says. "Embracing different traditions and cultures, such as Chinese culture and many others, is like adding new chapters to my book, making it more diverse and wonderful."
24. What is the main reason why Filippi falls in love with traditional Chinese dance?
A. Its potential to boost his career. B. Its mix of traditional and modern elements.
C. Its graceful and light movements. D. Its true reflection of his elegant personality.
25. How does the author illustrate the popularity of Filippi's videos?
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving an example.
C. By sharing a story. D. By making a comparison.

Sugar-free cookies, sugar-free candy, and diet soda----are these better for you? After sugar became a no-no in the nutrition and wellness world, sugar-free food and drinks acted as a replacement for once beloved sweet drinks and snacks. Being claimed to be ZERO sugar means the food anddrinks are healthier, better for diabetics, and help you slim down ... Right? Wrong. Sugar-free products aren't better for you. In fact, they are worse. For most sugar-free products, it means that artificial sweeteners (甜味剂)are used instead of real sugar. The problem is that these sweeteners do not come from natural sourees and they can do you more harm than good.
Let's get into what these artificial sweeteners actually are. Sugar-free sugar sounds wrong because there is no such thing as sugar-free sugar. Some of these sugar-free alternatives even contain sugar and the ones that have chemicals your body often does not know how to process. Most artificial sweeteners are a lot sweeter than sugar so only a small quantity of them are needed. That's why they can market sugar-free alternatives as "low-calorie" or "no-calorie'. It also means that you get no nutritional value from consuming them, which is why so many sugar-free replacements are classified as "non-nutritive". These artificial sweeteners tend to hide under some names. Actually, they are 200-600 times sweeter than sugar.
When you eat sweet stuff, your body continues to desire it and, even though your body cannot metabolize (代谢) these sugar-free alternatives, your brain does not know the difference. In turn sugai-free alternatives relate to weight gain and Type-2 diabetes. Besides, artificial sweeteners also damage your gut's ability to break down sugar which impacts everything you eat. In other words, your body doesn't know how to handle artificial sweeteners because they have nothing real to process.
Here is a good rule of thumb: stay away from artificial sweeteners and look for non-sugar, natural sweeteners like stevia (甜叶菊) or date sugar. In the war against artificial sweeteners and real sugar, both lose. Satisfy your sweet tooth with natural sugar that comes from fruits and stay away from products claimed to be sugar-free.
28. What do most sugar-free products have in common?
A. They don't taste sweet. B. They are free of calories.
C. They are rich in nutrition. D. They have artificial sweeteners.
29. What can be inferred about artificial sweeteners?
A. They are as sweet as sugar. B. They pose a big risk to health.
C. They can be metabolized easily D. They have long been added to food.
30. What does the author advise us to do?
A. To keep a balanced diet. B. To stay away from sugary products.
C. To choose fewer artificial ingredients. D. To take in sugar from natural sources
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Why are sugar-free products bad for your health?
B. How will sugar-free products affect your body?
C. What can be called sugar-free products?
D. Why are sugar-free products popular?
D
Slowness has been a sweeping trend in sustainability. Slow food celebrates local produce and traditional cooking methods; slow fashion is made with a focus on people and the planet. You may have even heard of the slow city, a campaign to restore local cultures and turn cities back to their natural environments.
Slow design developed from the larger slow movement. Although the term was only recently introduced, the idea of thoughtful design looks back to a time when buildings and furniture were made with great craftsmanship(手艺)and by hand-before the mass-produced throwaway furniture took over. You can think of the term “slow” as a celebration of timelessness: both the timelessness of a piece and the timelessness of the relationship between that piece and its owner.
One example of slow design today is what's been dubbed the brown furniture revival(复兴). Brown furniture refers to the heavy wooden furnishings that were popular in your grandparents' day but suddenly fell out of style at the turn of the century. Brown furniture is often associated with dark woods, such as trees like mahogany, walnut, and teak, that take decades to reach maturity and true craftsmanship to transform into functional pieces.
Today's furniture industry is dominated by the ready-to-assemble(RTA)(组装)furniture market. RTA furniture is usually constructed from low-quality fiberboard, which lasts a small part of traditional furniture's lifespan(寿命).The weight of furniture landfilled(废物填埋)in 2018 was 9.7 million tons, 4.5 times what was landfilled in 1960.
In a less direct way, the idea of timelessness also lends itself to a lower environmental impact. Besides their demonstrated physical durability, slow materials and design are meant to outlive trends and never be thrown out simply because they're out of style.
As second-hand shopping becomes more appealing to today’s young generation---because of its low environmental impact and affordability---the brown furniture of yesteryear is making a comeback.
32. Why is the first paragraph written?
A. To explain a new term. B. To present the topic of the text.
C. To provide background information. D. To highlight the importance of slowness.
33. What does the underlined word “dubbed” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Known as. B. Mistaken for. C. Compared to. D. Connected with.
34. What can be inferred about RTA furniture?
A. It is out of date. B. It has a long lifespan.
C. It is heavy and expensive. D. It has bad effects on the environment.
35. What is good news for the brown furniture revival?
A. Grandparents are buying new furniture.
B. The brown furniture will soon be mass-produced.
C. The young generation favors second-hand shopping.
D. Materials for slow design furniture are more available.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It happens from time to time that after a whole morning of studying, you are tired in the afternoon. It is then that you may want to eat something sweet, perhaps a sweet drink or a chocolate bar to lift your mood. ___36___
But a study suggests that sugar can make you feel worse rather than lift your mood. The German and UK researchers collected data from 31 studies involving nearly 1,300 adults. ___37___ Those emotions include anger, alertness, depression and tiredness. They found that people who have too much sugar become more tired and less alert within an hour, and that these feelings become more intense over time.
According to researchers, when people take in sugar, their blood sugar levels rise rapidly, leading to a burst of energy and a short “feel good” period. However, as they begin to digest the sugar, their blood sugar levels decrease quickly, leading to a bad feeling. ___38___ As with caffeine, this prevents the body from relaxing, leaving people being tired and less alert.
___39___ According to WHO, it is healthy to have the sugars found naturally in fruit, vegetables and milk, so long as they make up less than 5 percent of our daily total energy intake.
So the next time you feel tired and can’t concentrate on study and work, perhaps you should think twice before you bite into a chocolate bar. There are still other ways to relieve tiredness. ___40___
A. Maybe a little exercise at midday is a better idea.
B. So cutting sweet food out of the diet is a good choice.
C. They studied the effect of sugar on some aspects of mood.
D. After all, it’s believed that a “sugar rush” gives you energy.
E. Sugar in any form is not necessarily good for the human body.
F. But the result of the study doesn’t mean giving up sweet food altogether.
G. To remain on a “high”, people may eat more sugar until they become addicted to it.

65yearold Richard Oslen was interested in adventure and hunting. This time he hunted on a land near Watford City, N. D. In the cold winter, he set out to try a new place. He didn’t take his cellphone, thinking that it was not a must. He walked more than half a mile with two dogs to a wheat field.
Keeping an eye open for a bird taking flight, Richard stepped on a thin crust of ice on a river. The ice broke into pieces and dropped him four feet to the bottom.
Realizing that he was in trouble and was going to hurt himself, Richard decided to come to land quickly. However, his left leg was hurt, so he had to reach for his shotgun, unload it and use it as a crutch(拐杖). When he was partly up, he lost his balance and fell into the river again. This time one of his feet got stuck between two rocks. Richard told himself that if he didn't get himself out of that river, he wasn’t going to have a very good night.
Richard managed to make his foot free and climbed more slowly and carefully. Richard suddenly realized the difficulty of the task before him. The accident happened at about 2 p.m., and it was almost 5 p.m. with the road far away as the sun was setting.
Although Richard met with many difficulties, he didn’t give up. He was stubborn and sure that he must be persistent. With his gun's support, he tried jumping with his right leg. Once, twice, ... he failed again and again, feeling extremely tired. After a longer break, he made a desperate attempt. Luckily, he managed to climb out of the river and lay on the land, gasping. Temperatures dropped, and his hands and feet soon were completely numb with cold.
Paragraph 1: Richard’s dogs had been playing in the field and eventually came up to him. ________

Paragraph 1:
Richard's dogs had been playing in the field and finally came up to him. The two dogs surrounded his body to warm him and also periodically barked at distance. Richard finally reached the fence near the road with the help of his dogs. He feared exhaustion and rapidly freezing body would make him lose consciousness, so he decided to sit by the fence and wave down a driver. During the next half an hour, he waved wildly and shouted, but six vehicles passed without stopping. Richard nearly fell into despair.
Paragraph 2:
Luckily, not all hope was lost—there came the seventh car. He desperately cried for help and was lucky that the driver stopped his car. He asked Richard what was wrong. Richard told him his leg was badly injured and could not walk. The driver carried him on his back without saying anything. He was careful enough to lay Richard on the back seat and let the two dogs in the truck. The driver comforted him: “Don't worry. We are going to the nearest hospital.” He gave Richard warmth in the cold winter.

W: Mr. Johnson, can I speak to you for a minute?
M: Sure, Annie. What’s on your mind?
W: I’m just wondering how I’m doing in the class.
M: Is there something you find difficult about Spanish?
W: Well, I’m a native French speaker, so I understand most of its grammar.
M: That makes sense. The two languages are very similar. In fact, Spanish is similar to Italian and Portuguese, too. That’s why you have such good pronunciation as well.
W: Then why can’t I express myself on paper?
M: Don’t be so hard on yourself, Annie. Right now the important thing is that you can have simple conversations by using the vocabulary we learn in the books.
W: So you are saying I’m not falling behind?
M: Of course not. In fact, you are doing better than most of your classmates. Remember, this is a beginners’ class. If this were an advanced class, I would be concerned.
W: OK, thanks, Mr. Johnson. That makes me feel better.

M: Hi, Sherry. We are preparing a party for Kevin, our English teacher. He is going back to his hometown. We really need your help.
W: Sure. I’d love to help. When is the party?
M: He leaves on the 26th.
W: Well, we all have finals on the 24th, and we’ll need time to prepare, so how about we make it the day after the exams?
M: Perfect.
W: We then need to decide where to hold the party.
M: How about the school dining hall? The food there is delicious and the price is fair.
W: Sounds good. I love its decoration. What else? Oh, a present! Have you got any ideas?
M: Um...A tie? Some books? A basketball with all our names on it?
W: How about a photo book? He always took pictures of us, and sent them to the class. We could collect them and make them a book.
M: Great idea. Would you mind doing that?
W: No, not at all.

Recently, an Indonesian librarian, Raden Roro Hendarti, started a “Trash for Books” service for children in the nearby village, hoping to encourage children to spend more time on reading as well as clean up the environment in a novel way.
Each weekday, Raden gets up early and rides her three-wheeled “Trash Library” around the village. As soon as she shows up, little children, many accompanied by their parents, surround her for books. They are all carrying trash bags and Raden’s three-wheeler quickly fills up with the plastic bottles and other waste. According to Raden, she can collect about 100kg of waste each week, which is then sorted out by her coworkers and sent for recycling. “I am very happy my action can help the kids build a culture of literacy from a young age. As a result, they are going to spend less time on online games,” Raden said.
Now, her “Trash Library” has about 6,000 books for children to borrow. And she is planning to take the mobile lending service to neighboring regions as soon as possible.
