Having spent more than a decade on the dance floor, ROME---Niccolo Filippi, a 23-year-old Italian dance performer, recently decided to explore Chinese culture and its traditional dance forms and believes that this experience will not only boost his career, but also broaden his horizons beyond the world of dance.
His interest in diversifying his skills grew after he stumbled upon a short video of traditional Chinese-styled dance on YouTube. "I saw it as an art that combines tradition and modernity, which was mostly the reason why I liked it," says Filippi.
Ever since, he has been closely following Chinese dance performers and watching numerous videos to learn more about the traditional style that he admires. "I prefer the traditional style because of its light movements. It also reflects my personality with elegance," he adds.
Filippi's chance came when he was invited to perform for a Chinese New Year celebration in the central Italian city of Florence. He has since fully committed himself to the art form, learning several pieces and putting his newfound passion into practice.
"The biggest difference that I found is the change of mood and emotional expressions among dances," says Filippi, adding that he needed to shift from the dynamic moves of hip-hop to the graceful and fluid movements of Chinese dance. Despite various obstacles, Filippi's efforts have not gone unnoticed.
Two of his friends shared videos of his performances on social media, and the response was overwhelming. One video garnered 500,000 views, while the other received 200,000 views.
Filippi believes that learning about different cultures is priceless, and he sees it as a means of personal growth. "I like to think of a person as a book," he says. "Embracing different traditions and cultures, such as Chinese culture and many others, is like adding new chapters to my book, making it more diverse and wonderful."

Sugar-free cookies, sugar-free candy, and diet soda----are these better for you? After sugar became a no-no in the nutrition and wellness world, sugar-free food and drinks acted as a replacement for once beloved sweet drinks and snacks. Being claimed to be ZERO sugar means the food anddrinks are healthier, better for diabetics, and help you slim down ... Right? Wrong. Sugar-free products aren't better for you. In fact, they are worse. For most sugar-free products, it means that artificial sweeteners (甜味剂)are used instead of real sugar. The problem is that these sweeteners do not come from natural sourees and they can do you more harm than good.
Let's get into what these artificial sweeteners actually are. Sugar-free sugar sounds wrong because there is no such thing as sugar-free sugar. Some of these sugar-free alternatives even contain sugar and the ones that have chemicals your body often does not know how to process. Most artificial sweeteners are a lot sweeter than sugar so only a small quantity of them are needed. That's why they can market sugar-free alternatives as "low-calorie" or "no-calorie'. It also means that you get no nutritional value from consuming them, which is why so many sugar-free replacements are classified as "non-nutritive". These artificial sweeteners tend to hide under some names. Actually, they are 200-600 times sweeter than sugar.
When you eat sweet stuff, your body continues to desire it and, even though your body cannot metabolize (代谢) these sugar-free alternatives, your brain does not know the difference. In turn sugai-free alternatives relate to weight gain and Type-2 diabetes. Besides, artificial sweeteners also damage your gut's ability to break down sugar which impacts everything you eat. In other words, your body doesn't know how to handle artificial sweeteners because they have nothing real to process.
Here is a good rule of thumb: stay away from artificial sweeteners and look for non-sugar, natural sweeteners like stevia (甜叶菊) or date sugar. In the war against artificial sweeteners and real sugar, both lose. Satisfy your sweet tooth with natural sugar that comes from fruits and stay away from products claimed to be sugar-free.

Slowness has been a sweeping trend in sustainability. Slow food celebrates local produce and traditional cooking methods; slow fashion is made with a focus on people and the planet. You may have even heard of the slow city, a campaign to restore local cultures and turn cities back to their natural environments.
Slow design developed from the larger slow movement. Although the term was only recently introduced, the idea of thoughtful design looks back to a time when buildings and furniture were made with great craftsmanship（手艺）and by hand-before the mass-produced throwaway furniture took over. You can think of the term “slow” as a celebration of timelessness: both the timelessness of a piece and the timelessness of the relationship between that piece and its owner.
One example of slow design today is what's been dubbed the brown furniture revival（复兴）. Brown furniture refers to the heavy wooden furnishings that were popular in your grandparents' day but suddenly fell out of style at the turn of the century. Brown furniture is often associated with dark woods, such as trees like mahogany, walnut, and teak, that take decades to reach maturity and true craftsmanship to transform into functional pieces.
Today's furniture industry is dominated by the ready-to-assemble(RTA)（组装）furniture market. RTA furniture is usually constructed from low-quality fiberboard, which lasts a small part of traditional furniture's lifespan（寿命）．The weight of furniture landfilled(废物填埋）in 2018 was 9.7 million tons, 4.5 times what was landfilled in 1960.

Recently, an Indonesian librarian, Raden Roro Hendarti, started a “Trash for Books” service for children in the nearby village, hoping to encourage children to spend more time on reading as well as clean up the environment in a novel way.
Each weekday, Raden gets up early and rides her three-wheeled “Trash Library” around the village. As soon as she shows up, little children, many accompanied by their parents, surround her for books. They are all carrying trash bags and Raden’s three-wheeler quickly fills up with the plastic bottles and other waste. According to Raden, she can collect about 100kg of waste each week, which is then sorted out by her coworkers and sent for recycling. “I am very happy my action can help the kids build a culture of literacy from a young age. As a result, they are going to spend less time on online games,” Raden said.
Now, her “Trash Library” has about 6,000 books for children to borrow. And she is planning to take the mobile lending service to neighboring regions as soon as possible.
