    Unit 1 Teenage Life  Period 2 Reading and Thinking

    Teaching objectives

    1. To talk about your teenage school life.

    2. To learn the main idea of the text and each paragraph.

    3. To learn about the challenges Adam had  and improve the basic reading skills by skimming the text.

    4. To finish some basic exercises .

     

    Step 1.Lead-in

    1.What are the differences between schools in China and those in the foreign countries?

    2.What would you tell a teenager from another country about school life in China?

    School life in America:

    Around 7 a.m- 4 p.m.

    Students move to different classrooms to have classes.

    Go to school clubs or extra-curricular activities after school.

    Compulsory courses optional courses

    Homeworks mainly contains reading and essays.

     School life in China :

    Around 7 a.m- 6 p.m.

    Teachers move to different classrooms to teach.

    Go home and do homework after school.

    13 courses: Chinese, maths, English....

    Homeworks mainly contains copying and test exercises

     

    In China, students usually have classes in the same classroom and teachers take turns to teach in different classrooms.

    Class Schedule/ Timetable(课程表)

    We have at least 9 classes a day. Each class is about 40 minutes.

    We have 13 courses at senior high: Chinese, maths, English, politics, history, geography, physics, biology, chemistry, music, art, PE, and IT.

    2022·辽宁抚顺·高一期末)I imagine this would be the case for a lot of schools. We had students sitting on the floor in corridors before school, texting or running their fingers down the interface of their phones. We had students entering their classroom, placing their school books on the table and immediately turning to their phones without even a quick look at the teacher or fellow students.

    It’s not that we teachers did not take action. We were collecting phones to place in a basket at the beginning of each lesson, which would eat into valuable time and often produce further teenage worry. It is just that what we were doing was not effective enough.

    Well that’s all in the past and this year we all feel so much better for it. This is all because my school made the decision at the end of last year that enough was enough.

    We made a new rule. Phones could be used before school and after school and that was it. They had to be placed in lockers throughout the day and no phone could be on a person either in class or at lunchtime or break. The first day about 21 phones were collected throughout the morning and afternoon. Day two that number was five, and so on. Now it hardly raises divergence.

    Surprisingly, we are all used to it. Teachers practise what they preach. And I get the feeling students actually like it. School is easier this way. It is nice to check your phone at the end of the day. But now it seems normal not to worry or think about it until the bell has gone and there are buses and trains to catch. We can all see and feel the benefits. I wish every high school would do something like this.

    You’re not alone!

    Remember everybody else in your year is on the same boat. They may not realize it, but they’re just as nervous as you are. Moving to Senior High school is an opportunity, not a problem. Things are different and all you need to do is be polite and learn the new rules.

    Teachers are ready to help!

    If you’re unsure what to do or are worried about anything then you had better ask for help. Teachers are probably the best people to turn to as they’re experienced in helping new students. Some Senior High schools also have a “friends system”. If your school has this, then you will be paired with an older student. They will look out for you and help you if you have any problems or questions.

    There are lots of differences between Junior High school and Senior High school. You’ll have a homework diary or a student planner. You will have your lessons with different teachers in different rooms. You will have homework for different subjects on different days, so make sure you get organized. Make sure you have a copy of your school timetable written down so you know which rooms your classes are in and on which days you will have your different subjects.

    Other points

    If you’ve got an elder brother or sister at the school then ask them for advice.

    Be yourself! It sounds simple, but people will know you much better if you just act naturally.

    Having early nights makes a difference and you’ll find it easier to get up in the morning!
