Like many other primary school pupils, nine-year-old Minnal went abroad with her parents during the recent school holidays. It may come as a surprise to learn that she neither shopped at a mall nor ate at a fancy restaurant. She climbed a mountain.

For eight days in May, Minnal hiked nearly 100 kilometres to reach the 5364-metre-high Mount Qomolangma（珠穆朗玛峰） base camp in Nepal. The girl talked about her special trip, “I thought this was the most meaningful trip for me.” It has not been confirmed if the Primary Four pupil is indeed the youngest Singaporean to reach the base camp, as no such records are kept.

Mount Qomolangma’s south base camp in Nepal is where climbers planning to climb the world’s highest peak, stay to get used to the altitude（海拔高度）. However, Minnal can’t climb the peak（山峰）, because climbers have to be at least sixteen years to climb the peak.

How did it all start? It all began last year when Minnal’s mother decided she might want to climb the famous Himalayas. As a good hiker, she asked both father and daughter if they were up for the challenge. On 20 May, the 2016, the family flew to Nepal.

Minnal shared that most of the eight days were spent hiking ten to fifteen kilometres from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, with the help of three local guides. Luckily, she added, nobody fell ill with altitude sickness. She also said that she is thinking of climbing Mount Qomolangma in the future.

Anxiety is the state of feeling worried or nervous. When you’re anxious or stressed, you my feel something bad is going too happen.

When you think of starting a new project or going into a group situation with people you don’t know, do you feel fearful? Do you come up with lots of reasons not to do fun but risky things like joining a hiking club or a volunteer organization? If these happen, it shows that you are probably anxious, and your anxiety will stop you from going after your dreams. ◆Don’t wait for your anxiety to go down.

◆Set a realistic goal that makes sense for you.

We all have different personalities and hobbies. We don’t all want to be lawyers, have hundreds of friends, or run marathons. Whatever you want, just find out what is the simplest thing you can do to get started. Set a detailed goal, for example, “walk for 20 minutes three times next week”.
