Tny: Hi! Is this the meeting fr student vlunteers?Wang Li: Hi, Tny! Yes, it is!Tny: Oh, hi, Wang Li! I used t vlunteer at my high schl in America, s I wanted t try it here in China.Peipei:We’re glad yu’re here! Our meeting tday is t talk abut what kind f vlunteer prject we shuld d this term.Wang Li: Peipei, may I suggest that we d smething fr schls in pr areas? Perhaps we culd rganise dnatins f things such as pens and ntebks, r ther schl supplies fr pr students.Peipei: Gd idea, but we did that last year. Wuldn’t it be better if we did smething different this year, like rganising students t vlunteer their time?Wang Li: Like what?
Peipei:Well, like cleaning up the cmmunity, taking dwn ads frm walls, and picking up litter. It might be a gd idea t cntact the cmmunity ffice and ask hw we can help. We can play games, sing, r just chat!Tny: That sunds like ne f my schl’s vlunteer prjects.Wang Li: Really? What ther vlunteer prjects des yur schl take part in?Tny: Oh, all kinds. Think abut the fllwing questins and write dwn yur ideas.
1. D yu think students ding vlunteer wrk is f any use? Why r why nt?Yes, it is f great use. While it is true that ften they may be making nly a small, temprary difference t the lives f thers, the verall effect f a sciety helping each ther can be quite great. Vlunteering als makes a difference t vlunteers, making them mre aware f the needs f thers.2. In yur pinin, which is better, giving peple things, time, r mney? Why d yu think s?I think all three are imprtant. Peple shuld give what they have. Nt everyne has mney, but they may have time. On the ther hand, sme peple have a lt f mney t give, but are quite busy. Giving peple things may nt always be the best, as s ften mney is mre useful—with mney peple can easily buy things they need. Hwever, if the things are given with lve and the persn receiving that gift can feel that lve, then it is a gd gift.
In grups, talk abut ways t help thers. 1. What kinds f help d yu think peple need? Hw d yu think vlunteers culd help?
2. What kinds f skills and qualities culd yu ffer as a vlunteer?
3. Discuss where and hw yu can help. Where wuld it be pssible fr yu and yur classmates t vlunteer? What kind f vlunteer wrk culd yu and yur classmates d, based n yur grup’s skills and qualities?
Making suggestins
A: S, what kind f vlunteer prject shuld we d this term?B:There are many elderly peple living in my neighburhd. Perhaps we culd g visit them and see hw we can help them.C: Well, that’s true f yur neighburhd, but it isn’t true f mine.D: It isn’t true f mine either.C: Yu knw, there are a lt f empty plts f land in ur city that are full f rubbish. We might try cleaning them up.D:The prblem is that there are nly a few f us. We dn’t have enugh peple t d all that wrk.A: Well, my advice wuld be t start a public campaign t get thers invlved.B: That’s a great idea! I vlunteer at a lcal radi statin. I culd appeal fr help.A: And I lve t write. I culd write the text fr thse psters.C: Wnderful! S we’re all set?B: It lks like we are.
Jessie:Hi, Susan! Did yu see the animal shelter advertisement? I think it’d be great fr ur vlunteering prject!Susan:Hell, Jessie. Yes, I did see it. I’d lve t help ut in a shelter. Think f all thse cute, little animals!Jessie:Exactly, and it wuld als lk great n ur CVs. But maybe it’s t gd t be true :Yeah, what if we have t clean ut the smelly cages? I’d hate that!
Read the cnversatin belw. Decide which type f stress the wrds in bld shw: 1) strng emtin; 2) emphasis f imprtant infrmatin; 3) crrectin f a mistake; 4) cntrast r cmparisn.
Jessie:Well, we can ask fr glves. Hw abut yu clean the utside f the cages, and I’ll clean the inside?Susan:Thanks, Jessie, yu’re a true friend! Anyway, we shuld check the timing. Did the ad say Saturday afternns? I’m usually busy n Saturday afternns.Jessie:N, it said n Sundays, and in the mrnings. S let’s nt just talk abut it — let’s d it! It’s s exciting — d yu like cats best, r dgs?Susan:Oh, hey wait, Jessie, d yu think it matters that I’m allergic t cats? And what if there are snakes?
Have yu ever given a speech befre? Where did it happen and t whm?
D yu knw what kind f aids des China ffer t ther cuntries? Why des China ffer aids?

It has made a big difference t their lives. My mther als des a circuit f the rural villages t prvide medical treatment, help thse with disabilities, and prvide cnsultatin and training fr lcal dctrs. In additin, her team has given patients a new malaria treatment invented in China, and this has saved many lives.
Tday, I want t relay t yu that I’m prud f the wrk my mther has dne, and I am nw supprtive f it. Is her wrk wrth it? Yes, t the lives f the peple she is helping, it is wrth it. But by any criteria this wrk is wrth it t us as well, because it shws that we are glbal citizens interested in wrld stability, and that we feel respnsible fr thers and are ready t build a cmmunity with a shared future fr mankind. Everyne deserves a fair chance in life. When I think f all the things that we as Chinese citizens can be mst prud f, helping thers cmes at the tp f this list. Nw that I understand hw imprtant my mther’s wrk is, I’ve decided t becme a vlunteer myself t help peple in ther lands. In the future, I pray that yu will d the same.Thank yu!

A lack f water!I had n idea abut this prblem myself, until my father vlunteered t g t Ghana t dig wells. At first, I was a little upset and wrried abut his trip. After all, he wuld be gne fr up t tw years! Then I began t study up n this issue, and I learnt that what my father did was right. Since water is scarce, even thugh the water is harmful, peple g ahead and drink the water, which makes them sick.
In additin, peple may have t walk many kilmetres a day t get enugh water fr their daily use. The task f getting water usually falls t the female.
