For the most part, Hank, a two-year-old cat, is a homebody- and for good reason. But on November 6th, Bushong, his owner, spotted Hank resting on a branch near the top of a neighbor’s tree.

Bushong believed Hank got frightened by some dogs. The more scared he got, the higher he climbed. “Cats have an amazing ability to climb up trees, but they aren’t that good at climbing down,” said Dan D’Eramo, director of field services for the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA).

Bushong then asked the HRA to help, but it was no easy task. HRA called the fire department, but it refused to help because of safety concerns. Then Bushong called a construction company to ask about renting scaffolding(脚手架) but was told she would have to book the equipment 48 days in advance. Next she reached out to a local tree company, Casey Trees. But the crew said it wasn’t safe for a person to go up into the tree. Bushong became very sad.

Then neighbors came to help. Ed Baptiste, whose tree Hank had climbed, let Bushong sit in his backyard and called to Hank. Another neighbor donated a can of fish, hoping it might attract the cat to come down. Nearby dog owners took their pets on walks instead of letting them out in their yards to avoid further frightening Hank. Another neighbor suggested Bushong call a local business, which had a tall ladder. Unfortunately, their 42-foot ladder proved too short.

By day five, nothing had worked. That’s when another neighbor suggested creating a pulley(滑轮) system by throwing a sandbag attached to the rope to a branch higher than Hank. It will form a pulley system as the sandbag hangs down by gravity. Then raise a basket with some of the owners’ personal items. The cat may be attracted by the familiar scents and climb into the basket.

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    Carefully, they lowered Hank down.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    【答案】[参考范文]

Bushong decided to have a try. She filled a small basket with some of Hank’s favourite things. She called it Hank’s party pack. With the help of volunteers from Casey Trees, they used a special equipment and shot a sandbag attached to a rope high into the tree. They got lucky on the first try. The rope caught a branch directly above Hank. Pulling on the other end of the rope, they positioned Hank’s party pack just beneath him. To their great delight, he jumped in.

Carefully, they lowered Hank down. Once Hank reached the ground, Bushong took Hank into her arms, hugging him hard. Afterward, they went inside and ate, and Hank rested in his favourite chair. Hank’s adventure taught Bushong a lesson about neighbors helping neighbors. “I can’t believe so many people went out of their way to help me with this cat,” she said. “It made me feel good that I live in a neighborhood where people would do whatever they could to get him down. It gave me hope.”

    2.(2023·福建福州·高三专题练习)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I adopted him, he had been rescued from death inside a tightly tied black trash bag abandoned right beside a garbage truck on the road. An alert garbage man noticed the bag moving and used a metal rake (耙子) to tear open the bag to look inside. There was my shaking puppy dog. The rake damaged the nerves in his back so he limped a little, but he could run as fast as lightning.

For my dog’s first birthday, I entered him in a fun run sponsored by our local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). I’m not much of a runner, but the run was only 3 kilometers, so I thought it would be fun for both of us.

We practiced for weeks. On our practice runs, he was always eager to go and usually dragged me along behind him. I worked on his leash (拴狗链) manners so that he wouldn’t trip me on the big day. I felt we were ready for anything.

The fun run was downtown among the big buildings, so the noise of barking dogs all around us rose to a deafening pitch at the start of the race. My dog was frightened when the starting tone went off. He had trouble running in the right direction with all the confusion around us. Soon the runners began to thin out, and my dog was running straight and fast. We were passing people and making great time. I was dreaming of a gold-medal finish.

However, when we were six blocks from the finish, my dog suddenly stopped and dropped to the ground like a sack of potatoes. I almost dislocated my shoulder from the sudden stop as I was pulled backward by the leash.

He was lying flat on his belly with his head down in the middle of the crossroads. At first I thought something bad had happened to him. He was shaking and sobbing. I did a quick check and couldn’t see anything wrong. I tried to get him up, but he refused. The police officer doing traffic control impatiently signed me to move away so he could release the cars.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

But I couldn’t get my seventy-five-pound dog to get up.

    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Another half-block of carrying him brought the answer—a moving garbage truck.

    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

【答案】But I couldn’t get my seventy-five-pound dog to get up. The harder I tried to scoop him up from the pavement, the more he fought me. The officer yelling and cars honking, I pulled him with all my might, but in vain. Finally, I got my arm under him and lifted him up in a fireman’s carry, throwing him over my shoulder. As I staggered to the roadside, people around were taking my dog’s side, laughing I was running him too hard. I was fuming. My dog would run all day long and he wasn’t the least bit tired.

Another half-block of carrying him brought the answer — a moving garbage truck. Its sound must have hit my dog’s sensitive ears, so he cried louder and clawed at my back as we drew closer to it. I held on tighter and ran as fast as I could to get my sweet baby dog away from that scary garbage truck. I ran with him on my shoulder until I felt him relaxed, and then I set him down. He wagged his tail in gratitude for saving him from the garbage truck. Surely, we didn’t win any medals, but I won his trust forever.

Standing at the Police Outpost Lake’s edge, I was fishing with lsaiah, my cousin, our fishing tackle box nearby on the shore. Actually, I’d learned to fish from my dad. He’d taught more to fish alone, in silence, lost in my own thoughts. Like meditation. He’d taught me everything I knew about fishing. Then, he passed away.

“Jacob, where should I stand?“ asked Isaiah.

“Be quiet or else we won’t catch any fish,” I whispered.

    Isaiah frownedpouting(撅嘴)but it wasmessage received.”

”Why do I have to be so quiet? "asked quietly Isaiah. “All those birds are making way more noise than I ever could!”

I ignored him. Pulling back on my rod, squinting into the glare of the sun. Out of the corner of my eyeI caught a glimpse of a few great northern loons(潜鸟) gathering together not far from the shoreline. My mind traveled back to the past. My dad had been a fish and wildlife officer. He loved his job, especially the part where he protected nature from humans. When he returned, we sat on the couch together, and he amused me with stories of life on the road. He once mentioned the loon could easily stab() people to death with its beak!

Suddenly, Isaiah’s voice brought me back, “Look, something was coming.” Following the direction, he was pointing, I saw a loon, wailing and making sounds, swam away from the group, toward us.

Walking into the water, getting closer to the loon, we both saw thin wire wrapped around its neck and blood spots by its wing. Fishing line maybe? Was it the hook()on the line that made it bleed? Was the loon asking us for help?

    Paragraph 2:

Afraid, I held it out at arm’s length, and Isaiah cut away the fishing line using the scissors.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    【答案】One possible version

    Para1:

Reaching down, I touched its head, my heart racing. I could see there was a shiny red hook embedded in its body, and the fishing line was wrapped tightly around its neck. Left like this, the loon couldn’t survive. It was asking us to help! But if freed, would it stab us to death with its beak? I hesitated. Somehow I felt my dad’s presence, “Jacob, the bird won’t hurt you. It needs your help. Be brave!” Taking a deep breath, I closed my eyes for a second to calm myself. “Isaiah, go grab the scissors from the fishing tackle box.” I said firmly. Soon he came back with the tiny pair of scissors and I bent down to pick up the loon.

    Para2:

Afraid, I held it out at arm’s length, and Isaiah cut away the fishing line using the scissors. Luckily, the loon was silent and things went well. “Now take out the hook, Isaiah. Hurry! ” “All right! I will.” Isaiah bit on his lower lip. Slowly, his slim fingers worked to loosen the hook and pulled it out. Finally, the loon was freed. Isaiah and I breathed a sigh of relief. As I set it down on the water, it slapped its wings down slightly on the surface of the lake, seeming to be saying, “Thank you, boys.” Big smiles formed on our faces with a sense of accomplishment filled with our heart. I decided to protect wildlife like my father and felt it our duty to protect nature.

When I was fifteen, I lived with my family in a small town. My father’s profession was such that the whole family had to shift frequently from one place to another. My mother was a housewife and my sister was an artist. Due to my father’s transfer(调动) after every 3-4 years, my school life was terrible. I had to start a new life in new schools and make new friends. Because of this, I always felt lonely.

One Friday afternoon, I went with my friend Rocky to his home. As soon as the door opened, a pet dog jumped on Rocky and started licking his face. I asked Rocky, “Why is your pet doing this?” Rocky replied, “My doggy loves me so much. This is the way he shows his love. Animals can’t speak, but they too have feelings.” His reply was so touching that it made me think about keeping a pet dog.

After going back home, I shared the whole incident with my mother and sister and expressed my desire. My mother said, “It’s up to you, but if you keep a dog, it will be entirely your responsibility to look after it. ” My sister thought it wonderful to have a pet dog in the house, and she supported me. Now the real task for me was my father. We were pure vegetarians, and my father knew that animals needed non-vegetarian food for proper nutrition and growth. Therefore, my father was strictly against having a pet.

That evening when my father came back home, I asked him for a pet dog. After listening to my request, he said a clear no. Several days later, while I was walking in a park near my house, I saw a homeless puppy who was in pain because of an injured ear. He looked weak and sad. Out of pity, I decided to take the little dog home.

【答案】      From that day on, I took good care of the puppy, who I named Deedo. I took him to the vet who carefully examined Deedo and gave some required shots. Gradually, nourished by the love and care of me and my sister, Deedo recovered and looked happy and fit. He was a sweet companion to me and my sister, who always licked us with pleasure when we got home after school. Also, when my parents came back home, he always ran to them and greeted them with a wagging tail.

One day, I found my father’s attitude towards Deedo changed. Not only did he hugged Deedo, but also he always brought some non-vegetarian food to Deedo, which was a big step for my father, a pure vegetarian. Also he played with the dog after work and taught him some instructions. Deedo was a quick leaner and knew how to respond to different instructions, bringing much happiness to my family. Now Deedo is a family member who is loved by us.

    5.(2023·安徽·芜湖校联考三模)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Have you ever noticed how certain smells can call up particular emotions or memories? A whiff of perfume(一阵香水味)or after-shave recalls a favorite person; the delicious smell of warm bread tickles the taste buds(味蕾).

Think about newly cut grass or how the air smells after a thunderstorm. Burning leaves on fresh and cold fall days always remind me of the football at the weekend. Perhaps the smells that surround Christmas carry the most memories. The fresh green smell of pine trees; the fragrances of a variety of food, especially the ones given off by cookies being baked in an oven and hot chocolate. Moreover, the scent of wood smoke around the burning fire can also bring warmth and the comfortable feeling to our mind. It is amazing how much love and laughter they bring into our lives and even how much closer we become with each other because of them.

But the smell I associate best with Christmas and winter is a wet dog. Our dog was mostly an outdoor dog and was often wet completely in the rain. We tried to dry him off as soon as he came in, grabbing the old, dirty towel by the door. He usually shook himself before we could catch him. The walls of the back entry were always spotted with brown mud all winter. We brushed him regularly in spring and summer when winter fur fell out by handfuls, but baths were rare. So, of course, his smell built up over time. Try as we might, we never could completely get rid of that smell. It lay hidden deep in his fur and skin.

The distinctive smell of the wet dog was a reminder of the Christmas vacation when I was twelve, and the cousins from Ohio were visiting. We had gotten shiny, slippery flying saucers as gifts and were also blessed with fresh snow. The four of us spent as much time as possible sliding down the short hill to the pond. Naturally, we tested the ice on the pond before sliding the first day, and we knew we could slide across it and lengthen our ride.

    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

【答案】On the third day, we were so eager to play that we did not check it. A few degrees of warmth added a small layer of water to our slide, increasing our speed and excitement. My brother Peter

slid happily and rapidly down the hill and on to the pond. Seconds later, he was struggling in the

icy water. Peter was only eight and not a good swimmer, especially wrapped in a heavy winter

coat and boots. It happened all of a sudden and made us all in panic and scream

I stepped down the bank carefully to reach him, but the dog was faster. He jumped into the

water, grabbed Peter by his ailing hand, and pulled him to shore. The cousins and I were able to

finish pulling Peter out of the frigid water. You can guess the rest of the story. We managed to

wrap Peter in our coats and get him back up the hill to the house in record time. Sipping cocoa by

the heater, we patted and hugged that wet dog. The dog took all day to dry out. His wet dog smell

lingered longer and returned often, reminding us of his heroics and our own Christmas miracle.

    【导语】本文以人物为线索展开,讲述了作者十二岁时的圣诞节假期时和表亲们在池塘上滑冰,八岁的彼得不小心掉入池塘中。作者的狗跳进水中,帮助作者一行人救出彼得的故事。
