Dinner customs are different around the world. If you are a guest in Ghana (加纳), this information will help you a lot.
In Ghana, dinner is usually from four in the afternoon to six in the evening. But there are no strict rules about time. Whenever a guest arrives, a family offers food. When you go to a home, the person who receives guests takes you to the living room first. At this time everyone welcomes you. Then you go to the dining room. There you wash your hands in a bowl of water. All the food is on the table.
In Ghana you usually eat with your fingers. You eat from the same dish as everyone else. But you eat from one side of the dish only. It is not polite to get food from the other side of the dish. After dinner, you wash your hands again in a bowl of water.
Most meals in Ghana have a dish called fufu. People in Ghana make fufu from the powder (粉末) of some plants. Sometimes they cut the fufu with a saw (锯子) because it is very hard. You must chew fufu well, or you may get sick. You eat fufu with the fingers of your right hand only.

Many people love travelling to different countries, but if you plan to go abroad, you should know how to behave in different situations around the world.
Most travellers enjoy meeting new people, but sometimes you can be rude without saying anything. In Russia, you should never shake hands in a doorway, and if you’re travelling in Thailand, never touch people’s heads or point your feet at people. When the Japanese meet new people, they like giving business cards—but you should read the card carefully, not just put it in your pocket.
In most countries in Europe people expect a lot of eye contact when you talk to them, but in many Asian countries a lot of eye contact seems unfriendly. And in South America people usually stand quite close to each other when they talk, but in countries like the USA you need to give people more personal space. Also, it’s rude to interrupt Japanese people while they are talking to you. You must wait until they finish before you start speaking.
In restaurants in China you can leave a bit of food on your plate, and it’s OK to start smoking before other people finish eating, which you mustn’t do in the UK. When in India, remember to eat with your right hand. Also avoid leaving empty bottles on the dinner table in Russia—that’s bad luck.
When you’re travelling in Asia, if someone invites you to his or her home, don’t forget to take off your shoes when you arrive.
With so much to think about, it’s not surprising that many people prefer going on holiday in their own countries—or you might just decide to stay at home!

Different countries have different New Year’s Day traditions.
In Japan, people send postcards to friends and family. They also fly kites, play games, and read poems. Some traditions are like those of Chinese New Year’s Day. For example, they bang gongs (敲锣) to drive away bad luck and give money to children on January 1.
In Scotland, people bring gifts to neighbors just after midnight. In Denmark, people break old plates to attract new friends. Dutch people like doughnuts (甜甜圈) because their ring shape is a symbol of a complete year. In Spanish-speaking countries, people wear red underwear on the New Year’s Day. They believe it will bring good luck. In Spain and Mexico, people eat 12 grapes to get 12 lucky months.
It’s common to give a loved one a kiss at midnight on New Year’s Day around the world. People from many countries also make resolutions, believing that the New Year is a good time to leave bad habits behind. Common resolutions include eating healthy food, exercising, or giving up smoking.
Hold a party, watch some fireworks, eat a special kind of food, or make a resolution. No matter where you are, there are plenty of great ways to welcome the New Year.

Ⅸ.Dear Li Hua,
I am happy to hear that you are going to study in Canada. But it seems you are worried about living there. Now I want to give you some advice. The weather in Canada in November is quite cold, so you’d better bring more warm clothes with you. What’s more, because you will live with a Canadian family, you have to remember not to enter others’ room without knocking at the door. Before you use the phone, please ask the family first. Everything will be fine if you are polite and ready to talk to them. They will enjoy having you in the house. As for something important, such as money, you should carry it with you all the time or keep it in the bank. Hope you will enjoy your life there.
Yours,
Lin Jie
