At least 109,265 square kilometers of land burned in Australia from September 2019 to March 2020. Around 1,250,000,000 animals died in the fires.
Like millions of others around the world, 18-year-old Rachel Ratelle from the US saw news of the fires. She felt sad as she watched a badly hurt koala trying to climb a tree to safety.
But unlike many people, she decided to do something about it. She called wildlife rescue organizations (救援组织) in Australia to find out what they needed most. Many groups were asking for hand-sewn (手工缝制的) pouches (育儿袋) for animals like koalas and kangaroos that lost their homes and parents in the fires.
Ratelle wanted to provide these things, but there was just one problem. " I've never sewn in my life, " Ratelle said. "Giving money seemed like something too simple. I just wanted to help these animals by doing something myself, so I decided to learn how to sew."
Over the next month, Ratelle bought her own sewing machine and taught herself how to sew by watching online videos. She sewed 25 pouches of different sizes and sent them to wildlife rescue organizations in Australia.
A week later, she received a photo from an organization with a baby kangaroo in one of her pouches. She said it was a great feeling. "It made me feel like I contributed (做出贡献) to the world, and it showed how a simple act of kindness can go a long way, " Ratelle said. "I plan to use my new sewing skills to help animals and people who have suffered from natural disasters (灾难)."

D. Small acts can help in a huge way

Lyrebirds (琴鸟) are one of Australia's best-known birds. They have a small head and long, strong legs. Their body is dark brown or grey. The female (雌性动物) has a long brown tail behind her but lyrebirds are remembered because of the male's very beautiful tail. The male has sixteen feathers (羽毛) and is about one metre long. The two outer feathers of the tail are golden brown and curved (弯曲的). This curved shape reminds people of a musical instrument — the lyre. The other surprising thing about lyrebirds is that they can copy perfectly any sound around. They can remember the songs of about twenty other kinds of birds. These days, lyrebirds have been heard copying the sounds of car alarms and crying babies!
Lyrebirds are found in wet rainforest. Because they are not great flyers, they spend most of their time on the floor where there is plenty of food. They use their strong claws to turn over rocks to find something to eat.
After growing into an adult, the male makes a space in the forest, or builds a hill, and he dances on the hill. He spreads his tail forward over his head and shakes it, jumping and moving slowly from side to side. The male sings wonderful songs. How could any female refuse his love?
The female builds her own nest (窝) in an old tree or on some rocks. It is a round nest with a hidden side entrance which helps to protect the eggs from other hungry animals. She lays a single egg and brings up her chick alone.
When in danger, lyrebirds will try to run away. They can use their wings to fly onto low trees and rocks. They also use strange sounds they can make to scare away their enemies.
( )36.Which of the following is the picture of a lyrebird?
( )37.What ability makes lyrebirds unusual?
A. They can fly very high in the sky.
B. They can break rocks with their claws.
C. They can copy many sounds they hear.
D. They can fight their enemies with their tail.
( )38.What will happen after a hill is built by a lyrebird?
A. The female will soon lay an egg on it.
B. The female will take it as her new home.
C. The male will begin to watch his enemies.
D. The male will try to catch the female's attention.

Australia is one of the most famous oceanic countries. The country is famous for its wool production and seashore tour. As the climate there is warm and comfortable, many people spend vacations there every year. I'm a super fan of water entertainment, so I choose it as my destination (目的地).
In Australia, the sky is bluer than blue and the clouds are whiter than white. All the local people enjoy an optimistic (乐观的)and active life. They also show their kindness and enthusiasm (热情)to the tourists. The first stop should be the Sydney Opera House which is among the most brilliant and splendid (雄伟的) buildings in the world. Many world-class plays are put on in it. It is like a seashell with glorious decorations inside.
Then Melbourne is a good choice as the next stop. In Melbourne, the sun cream is a must as the sunshine there may burn your skin. The most attractive thing to me is the Australian Open, which is one of the biggest world-class tennis competitions. Many great players such as Roddick, Federer and its local player Hewitt gather to compete. It's really a feast for the eyes.
Australia is also home to the most challenging and exciting surfing and diving projects. As we know, it is always called "a country riding on the back of the sheep". From the interesting saying, we can know something about the high wool producing country. If you love animals, kangaroos and koalas are good company to you. So don't forget Australia when you plan a trip.
