Jules Verne was born on 8 February 1828 in the French city of Nantes. From an early age, he had a fascination with exploration and discovery. When he was six, his teacher, Madame Sambin, told him stories about her husband, who disappeared while travelling the world on a ship 30 years before. She told her class that he was like Robinson Crusoe, a fictional(虚构的)castaway who lived on a desert island. Verne would later write stories about similar characters.
In 1847, Verne was sent by his family to study law at a university in Paris, but he preferred to write novels, poems and plays. After graduating, he realized he wanted to write science adventure stories. This had never been done before, but Verne was sure that it would be a success. His first story, Five Weeks in a Balloon, was published in September 1862. His career lasted for more than 40 years, during which time he wrote more than 60 gripping(扣人心弦的)stories.
To begin with, Verne wrote positive and optimistic books. Many of these were to be his most popular creations. Although some included fantastical elements, they were usually based on scientific facts, making them believable. These happy stories weren’t to last. As he got older, Verne became less confident in the idea that science and technology were always good for the planet. His hooks started to include more scientists who used technology for their own-sometimes evil-purposes. Verne died on 24 March 1905, but new books continued to be published until 1919. These stories were based on ideas Verne had written about while he was still alive, but featured new characters and plots created by his son, Michel.
In the 20th century, his books were translated into more than 140 languages and several successful film versions came out. His creations have been recognized as an inspiration for many scientists and inventors. Many of the futuristic ideas from his most popular books have since come true.
24. What is the function of paragraph 1?
A. To describe Verne’s discovery.
B. To introduce the characters of his stories.
C. To present the adventure of Sambin’s husband.
D. To show the teacher’s impact on Verne’s writing.
25. What does the underlined word “This” refer to in paragraph 2?
A. Studying law.
B. Graduating from university.
C. Writing novels, poems and plays.
D. Writing science adventure stories.
26. What can be learned about Verne’s later works?
A. They covered happy elements.
B. They were unbelievable stories.
C. They revealed Verne’s doubt on science.
D. They were partly written by Verne’s son:
27. Which of the following words can best describe Verne?
A. Talented and productive. B. Popular and caring.
C. Optimistic and generous. D. Friendly and honest.
C
Under normal circumstances, falling asleep during a paid tour is a waste of money or an offense to your guide at worst. But that’s not the case with this new experience coming out of Hong Kong. As its name suggests, the Sleeping Bus Tour is designed to help passengers catch some sleep, and rides are already selling out.
A 2022 survey by the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Center of Communication and Public Opinion notes almost 70% respondents experiences some form of sleep disorder. Hong Kongers have much stress from work and need a space for sleeping, but their living spaces are too small. Some may not live alone and have to share apartments with their family, which may not be a good environment for a proper rest.
After noticing passengers falling asleep on their buses, the Hong Kong tour company, Ulu Travel Agency, recently launched such an innovative way for adults to sleep: the Sleeping Bus Tour. The five-hour bus ride takes passengers on an 83-kilomcter (about 51.5 miles) journey aboard a regular double decker bus. Not only is the Sleeping Bus Tour the first of its kind, it’s also the longest bus route in Hong Kong, ensuring that tired passengers have plenty of time to enjoy some sleep.
Once passengers board the bus, they are treated with a goodie bag complete with an eye mask and earplugs to help them sleep and they are allowed to bring their own blankets and slippers. The long ride includes a few stops for scenic spots and bathroom breaks. Passengers can also get off the bus early at one of several drop-off points if they’d prefer to continue their sleep at home rather than complete the entire journey. Tickets for the Sleeping Bus Tour are divided in four categories from the “Zero-decibel(分贝)Sleeping Cabin” to the “VIP Cabin.” Prices range from about $17 USD to S115 USD per person. For more information on this unique experience, head to the Ulu travel company website.
28. What does the survey show?
A. Hongkongers desire to live alone.
B. Hongkongers can afford paid tours.
C. Hongkongers are under extreme stress.
D. Most Hongkongers have trouble sleeping.
29. Why was the Sleeping Bus Tour launched?
A. To improve the sleeping habits.
B. To make more profits.
C. To reduce the stress from extra work.
D. To help adult passengers rest properly.
30. What can a passenger get from the Sleeping Bus Tour?
A. A ride in a high-tech bus.
B. A guided sight-seeing tour.
C. A bag with sleep aid products.
D. A blanket and a pair of slippers.
31. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To introduce a bus tour.
B. To inform readers of a new survey.
C. To advertise a travel company.
D. To raise concerns over sleep problems.

It’s likely that you don’t think you have invited a spy into your home when setting up a new TV. But new Samsung, LG and Vizio smart TVs can record and share everything that is viewed, whether it’s a broadcast or something streaming from the Internet. And some smart TVs can even track what DVD you’re watching.
Your viewing habits are valuable information for marketers who might want to use the information to introduce new shows or add extra content about some products to the shows you are already watching. The ads are primarily pop-ups like the ones you see on your computer.
You might not realize that you allowed that data collection when you agreed to the long privacy policy during setup; with Samsung, it is 47 screens of text. LG and Vizio also ask you to sign away your privacy in thousands of words in fine print.
When Consumer Reports sent an email to the manufacturers to ask how they are using the technology, representatives for Samsung and Vizio didn’t make any comment. An LG representative said that the company isn’t using any data to send personalized ads and has no plans to do so. But Consumer Reports said that could change at any time.
You might think, “Well, why don’t I just turn those marketing features off?” It’s not always so easy. To stop manufacturers’ tracking, you have to fight your way through menu settings. On an LG set, go to “settings”, then “options”, then “Live plus”, click “off”, and then close. With Vizio, it’s a voyage through three menus to turn off the box “Smart Interactivity”, With Samsung, it’s a similar trip to find the box “SyncPlus and Marketing” to disable it.
Consumer Reports said that disabling the marketing feature may cause you to lose offers of extra scenes which are related to the shows you’re watching. But maybe that’s a small price to pay for knowing that what you’re watching remains private.
32. What might the marketers use your viewing habits to do?
A. To improve the quality of smart TVs.
B. To collect some suggestions about shows.
C. To recommend shows or advertise products.
D. To build a strong relationship between produces and customers.
33. How does Consumer Reports find the comment made by an LG representative?
A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Reasonable. D. Approving.
34. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 5?
A. How we learn to use TVs’ settings.
B. How we can become wise customers.
C. How we send personal information to others.
D. How we stop our viewing from being tracked.
35. Which of the following does the author probably agree with?
A. It’s worthwhile to turn marketing features off.
B. People should keep their watching habits a secret.
C. TVs’ marketing features should be further developed.
D. TV producers should apologize to customers for their misbehavior.
