When you’re spending days on end in a hospital bed it’s the little things that can make all the difference. That’s what Jess Moran learned when she spent 30 days in hospital in 2014 after being diagnosed (诊断) with cancer. Every day, Moran, then 25, would receive several cards, most from her family and friends, but many from people she had never met.
Her most memorable card came from a woman she had never met—a friend’s boyfriend’s mother—who wrote inside, “You are strong, you are loved, and you will get through this.” The saying soon became Moran’s personal mantra (祈祷文) while in hospital.
“I was lucky that my family and boyfriend were there when I was in hospital, but not everyone has people visiting all the time.” says Moran, who spent more than 100 days on floor 7D at the hospital.
With that in mind, she decided to start bringing cards to other cancer patients staying at the hospital. What started as Moran and her boyfriend. Mike, writing cards has turned into something much larger, with Moran delivering approximately 1,000 “Smile Cards” to patients in the past year.

While Ellard Hunting and fellow researchers were out studying the weather at a field station in England, they noticed something unexpected on their instruments. Though there was no storm approaching, the scientists’ electric field monitors recorded a curious increase in atmospheric electric charge.
Nearby, honeybees that lived in on-site hives were swarming (蜂拥) as they attempted to find a new home. When the team took a closer look at their data, they discovered that the swarming honeybees had created an atmospheric electric charge. The researchers shared more details about their findings in the journal iScience.
“This is the first report of biology as a source of space charge.” says Hunting, a biophysicist at the University of Bristol in England. Scientists had known that individual bees carry a small charge while flying through the air, caused by the friction of their body parts against the air and each other. It’s similar to how rubbing a balloon on a piece of fabric creates static electricity. Scientists believe a bee’s charge helps pollen (花粉) stick to it and signals to other bees which flowers have already been visited. But until now, researchers had never recorded such a high voltage (电压) among swarming honeybees.
As far as electricity generation goes, a bee swarm’s charge isn’t so impressive: It would take about 50 billion bees to power an LED light. But compared to the charges produced by common weather events, the bees’ charge density was six times greater than an electrified (带电的) dust storm and eight times greater than a thunderstorm cloud.
Using the honeybee data, the researchers created a model to predict the potential atmospheric electric charge of other insects, including locusts (蝗虫), moths and butterflies. “Locusts swarm on biblical scales.” says Liam O’Reilly, a co-author and biologist at the University of Bristol. Clouds of these insects can span up to 1,200 square kilometres and contain roughly 30 million locusts per square kilometer. The researchers predict locusts would have a much bigger influence on the atmosphere compared to honeybees.
Scientists hope to continue exploring how biology influences physics and are curious to know if something similar is happening with other wildlife, such as birds and bats.

The Food and Drug Administration (F. D. A.) announced a new proposal on Wednesday that would change the criteria for which packaged foods the agency considers “healthy”, in an attempt to modernize its approach to nutrition and reduce the burden of diet-related diseases.
Currently, about 5 percent of all packaged foods are labeled “healthy”, according to the agency. The definition, which was set in 1994, allows for food manufacturers to add the word “healthy” to their products, as long as the products have limited amounts of total fat, saturated (饱和的) fat, cholesterol and sodium (钠) and provide at least 10 percent of the daily value of one or more of the following nutrients: vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron, protein or dietary fiber. A. updated its guidelines to allow for some foods to contain more total fat and to include some that provide at least 10 percent of the daily value of vitamin D. Importantly, there is currently no limit on added sugars under the current definition- an omission that the F. D. A. believes is inconsistent with today’s nutrition science.
“The old rule was really outdated— you could create any kind of Frankenstein food that met the nutrient criteria and label it as healthy,” said Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a professor of nutrition in Boston. “This is a major advance.”
The proposed rule, which the agency announced to coincide with Wednesday’s White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health, introduces a new limit on added sugars-in general, no more than 2.5 grams per serving, although this can vary depending on the food.
The new definition aims to encourage healthy eating by prioritizing a mix of vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy, proteins and certain oils, including vegetable oils. A “healthy” food would need to contain a minimum amount of at least one of those food groups and be under the proposed limits for saturated fats and added sugars. Raw whole fruits and vegetables would automatically qualify. Many sugary cereals (谷物), highly sweetened yogurts and white breads, which might currently qualify as “healthy” under the existing definition, would be removed under the new rule．

When you’re spending days on end in a hospital bed it’s the little things that can make all the difference. That’s what Jess Moran learned when she spent 30 days in hospital in 2014 after being diagnosed (诊断) with cancer. The next morning. I rode my bike to Mr. Davis’s barn (畜棚). I fed the horses their grain and water. And then I looked at Jack’s hoof. The part inside of the big iron shoe looked red and broken. When I put the hoof down, Jack let only the front of it rest lightly on the ground. I knew that Jack couldn’t work with that injured foot, but if he didn’t earn his living. Mr. Davis would get rid of him. I just couldn't let that happen. But what could I do?
I didn’t know anything about medicine, and Mr. Davis said he wouldn’t pay for a doctor. As I slowly rode my bike home, my mind raced. I needed to find a way to help my big friend.
