I have always admired students who hand their homework in on time and never forget to do it. Me, on the other hand, ... OK, I admit. I’m terrible at getting myself organized! But lately I’ve started keeping a small study diary. I write down everything I need to do and when it needs to be done by. Then I write a reminder a few days before the date just in case. It’s helping.
So I was wondering, what are your tips for getting organized? Post a comment(评论) below. I’m hoping we can all share some tips to teach us all better study skills.
    Comments
Hana   Good question, Amy. I always spend about five minutes at the end of the day tidying up the desktop on my computer. I make a backup of important documents. I delete things I don’t need anymore and put everything into the correct folder.
Gloria  The most important thing is to start studying a few weeks before the exams and not leave it until the night before! That’s just common sense, I think.
Lou Hi, Amy. My tip is to have a big noticeboard in your bedroom, divided into different sections. I’ve got one. It’s a whiteboard. I’ve got a section for each school subject and another one for other things. I use pens to write reminders and I make sure I look at it every day. The best part is when I remove something from the board!
    31. What’s the text mainly about?
    A. How to keep a study diary. B. How to be an organized student.
    C. How to improve your memory. D. How to learn English well.
    32. From the text, we know that _____.
    A. Amy is very good at managing her studies
    B. Gloria usually starts to study the night before exams
    C. Hana always keeps her computer desktop tidy
    D. Amy disagrees with Hana’s and Lou’s opinions
    33. Lou suggests that Amy should use a noticeboard to _____.
    A. tell other people what she’s doing B. improve her confidence in studying
    C. record what she has done D. remind herself of what she needs to do
    B
Beijing is no stranger to Western food. American restaurants like McDonald’s and KFC have brought more Western dishes to the local food scene in recent years. Now, two new restaurants have joined them.
In August, Taco Bell and Shake Shack opened their doors to customers in Beijing. Taco Bell is a popular American fast food restaurant that features Mexican(墨西哥) food. Hard and soft-shell tacos(玉米卷) are a staple (招牌) of the menu; they are generally served with beef and tomato. However, there are new menu items that are special to the Beijing location, such as the Yang Berry Freeze and Avocado Oolong Tea.
Shake Shack, known for its traditional American-style hamburgers and milkshakes(奶昔), is also serving up dishes that won’t be found in branches outside of the capital. Harry Wang, who studied in the US, visited the restaurant soon after it opened. “The last time I had Shake Shack was more than a year ago when I was in the United States,” Wang said. “The food is pretty similar to what we had in the United States, but there is a milkshake exclusive to Beijing.”
The milkshake Wang mentioned is the Hutong Hawthorn(山楂). The shake mixes hawthorn, a traditional Chinese snack, into a milkshake, a common ice cream drink in Western fast food.
Both restaurants also have elements of Chinese culture in their decorations. Shake Shack’s windows feature cartoons showing hutong life, and Taco Bell has a picture of a palace from the Temple of Heaven on one of its walls.
    34. Why are McDonald’s and KFC mentioned in the first paragraph?
    A. To show the popularity of Western food in Beijing.
    B. To lead up to the topic of new Western restaurants in Beijing.
    C. To compare the differences between McDonald’s and KFC.
    D. To express the writer’s personal love for Western food.
    35. What can we know about Taco Bell?
    A. It is a traditional Mexican restaurant.
    B. It has the same menu around the world.
    C. It came to China for the first time in August.
    D. It is a fast food restaurant serving Mexican food.
    36. What does the underlined word “exclusive” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
    A. Special.        B. Common. C. Important.     D. Acceptable.
    37. What does the article tell us about Taco Bell and Shake Shack?
    A. They try to keep the original(原始的) characteristics in all locations.
    B. They will probably have more customers than KFC.
    C. They make changes to the menu for Chinese people’s tastes.
    D. They like to work together with Chinese restaurants.
    C
In the late 19th century in Europe, many people had more money to spend than before. They had better education, so they could read about the world outside of their own countries. They mostly couldn’t afford to actually travel, but they could dream about travel.
Surely the fact that he wanted to travel and see the world is one of the reasons why French writer Jules Verne’s great science fiction Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870) was such a success. He made travel seem so exciting. He made sure to fill his adventures with real and imagined wonders.
The story begins when a sea monster(怪物) that looks like a whale(鲸) attacks and sinks(击沉) an American boat. The great powers meet in New York and decide to send a boat to deal with the monster. The crew(船员) will include Ned Land, a famous whale hunter, a sea biologist called Professor Aronnax and his assistant, Conseil.
After a terrible battle (交火), the crew’s ship sinks, and Aronnax, Land and Conseil find themselves hanging on to the “monster”. Of course, it’s not an animal at all but a submarine(潜艇) called the Nautilus. Its pilot and builder is Captain Nemo, who saves but also kidnaps the men.
Nemo hates men. We don’t learn why, at least in this book. All we know is that he’s built the Nautilus so that he can be out of reach of the world’s governments. This is the reason he can’t let his new captives(俘虏) go. Once saved, they would lead them to the Nautilus and to Nemo. Much of the book is given over to the travels of the Nautilus. There are great stories of journeys to see fact, but also legend(传说).
In a big accident, Aronnax, Land and Conseil escape the Nautilus, but no one knows what became of it, nor of Nemo.
    38. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the novel?
    A. The novel is about four friends’ series of adventures under the sea.
    B. The Nautilus was specially prepared by the US government for the travel.

    39. Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea was such a success partly because ______.
    A. he included many science facts in the book
    B. he shared a lot of his travel experiences in the book
    C. his was the first science fiction in the history of English literature
    D. the journeys he describes are exciting and full of real and imagined wonders
    40. Captain Nemo keeps the other three people captive because ______.
    A. he doesn’t want to stay on the ship alone
    B. he needs their help to go on further adventures
    C. he is afraid that their return would cause trouble for him
    D. he thinks they would do something against the law
    41. At the end of the story, ______.
    A. the Nautilus sinks and nobody survives
    B. Captain Nemo loses his life in a big accident

On April 19, NASA recorded a historic moment as their small helicopter(直升机) Ingenuity flew on Mars for nearly 40 seconds, marking the first powered, controlled flight of an aircraft on another planet, according to Reuters.
The Mars helicopter, Ingenuity, hitched(搭便车) a ride to Mars on the Perseverance rover(毅力号), aiming to test powered flight on another world. ① For the first flight, the helicopter took off, flew about 3 meters above the ground, hovered(盘旋) in the air shortly and then landed. It also completed its second flight on April 22, NASA reported.
The now historic Ingenuity took six years to make. ② Above all, helicopters need air to fly. The blades (桨叶) of a helicopter must spin fast enough to produce a force called lift. But lift can only be produced in some kind of air. While Mars does have air, it’s much thinner than Earth’s – about 100 times thinner.
③ Then there’s the Martian gravity to consider, which is about one-third the strength of gravity on Earth. This actually gives the flight a slight advantage. But this is offset(抵销) by the lack of air, The Conversation reported. To deal with these difficulties on the red planet, Ingenuity’s two rotors(水平旋翼) had to spin much faster than any helicopter’s on Earth.
④ Even sending the signal(信号) for the flight to begin required advanced technology. While it only requires minutes for radio signals to travel between Earth and Mars, there was still a delay(延迟) of hours for those signals to reach the helicopter.
The team is planning four flights that will push the helicopter to fly higher and longer to test the limits of what it can do. Meanwhile, the Perseverance rover may use its microphones to capture(捕捉) sounds of the future flights, according to CNN.
    42. What do we know about Ingenuity’s first flight?
    A. It was completed on April 22.
    B. It flew 30 meters above the ground.
    C. It circled around in the air for one hour.
    D. It was the first attempt at powered, controlled flight on Mars.
    43. What makes it hard for a helicopter to fly on Mars?
    A. The weak signal on Mars. B. The Martian gravity.
    C. The thin air on Mars.   D. The thin material needed for blades.
    44. It is better to put “Once we understand the difficulties of what was required for the flight, we can understand why. ” in ________.
    A. ① B. ② C.③ D.④
    45. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
    A. The achievements of Ingenuity.
    B. The limits of the Perseverance rover.
    C. A new technology to capture sounds.
    D. The next steps of the Mars Helicopter project.

Because of COVID-19, it is useful for many people to wear masks to avoid illness. In fact, masks have been helping humans for centuries. Let’s take a look at something about masks.
    1st century
During that period, many people in Roman Empire lived a hard life and had to work underground in mines(矿井) to support their families. But after several years’ work, most of them had difficulty breathing normally and finally died.
To solve this problem, Pliny the Elder (23-79 AD), a Roman philosopher and naturalist, recommended the use of animal bladder(膀胱) skins to stop dust from being taken in. After that, his idea was considered the very first recorded mask invention.
    16th century
Early inventions did not stop with Pliny. Many centuries later, Italian artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), put forward a suggestion of using a wet cloth over the face to protect against the harmful chemicals.
    19th century
The design of the mask took a big step forward in the 19th century. In 1848, American Lewis Hassley firstly started to patent(注册专利) a protective mask for miners, which was a landmark. Masks at this stage were similar to gas masks. Later, in 1897, Polish-Austrian doctor Johann von Mikulicz-Radecki designed a simple mask made of one layer of gauze(纱布), recommending medical workers to wear it to prevent infection. Since then, surgical masks have appeared.
    20th century
In 1910, an epidemic broke out in Northeast China. Chinese doctor Wu Liande designed a cheap face mask called “Wu’s mask”. Made of two layers of surgical gauze, it could be wrapped(缠绕) around the back of the head and tied in a knot. This mask was praised by experts around the world, as it was easier to make and had a lower production cost.
    Modern exploration
With the development of science technology, the materials in masks have been improved to better protect its wearer. For example, in 2012 when China suffered from smog(雾霾), mask models such as N95 and KN90 became highly popular. In the future, masks will continue to improve, hopefully so will the habits of humans.
