THE COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS
It takes hard work to guarantee your college application stands out. Make it rise to the top of the pile by becoming familiar with the application process and getting organized.
HOW MANY SCHOOLS TO APPLY TO
There are a ton of schools out there, but applying to too many colleges is a common mistake. Submitting your application to between five and eight colleges is suggested. Of that list, you should include a variety of dream schools, safety schools and possible schools.
EARLY DECISION AND EARLY ACTION
Early Decision and Early Action are options that allow you to apply to a college early and receive the admissions department’s decision in advance of traditional applicants. However, there are also restrictions that are important to understand. Early Decision, for example, is binding; if you submit Early Decision to a college and they accept, you must attend that college. You will also not be able to apply for more financial aid after this point. Early Action, on the other hand, is not binding; you can submit Early Action to a college, get accepted and have until the following spring to decide whether or not you want to attend.
WRITING A COLLEGE ESSAY
A good college essay is a critical part of the application process. A college essay is really just a way for admissions advisors to get to know you more, hear your perspective and relate to you on a personal level. This is one area you know a lot about, so just remember to infuse as much of “you” as possible into your essay.
NAILING YOUR COLLEGE INTERVIEW
A college interview is an opportunity for you to make a personal impression on an admissions officer and increase your chances of acceptance into a college. It’s a way for you to differentiate yourself from others and show your personality in a way that you can’t on a piece of paper. Practice and preparation will help you do well during your college interview.
1. Who is the text intended for?
A. College freshmen. B. Educational institutions.
C. High school students. D. General public.
2. What can you do after the college accepts your Early Decision?
A. Apply for another safety school. B. Apply for more economic support.
C. Start to prepare for your college. D. Start to prepare your college essay.
3. How can you stand out in the application process?
A. By applying to as many colleges as possible.
B. By submitting Early Decision or Early Action.
C. By praising the target colleges in the essay.
D. By showing your personalities in the interview.
根据EARLY DECISION AND EARLY ACTION部分中“if you submit Early Decision to a college and they accept, you must attend that college.(如果你向一所大学提交了提前录取申请,而他们接受了你,你就必须进入那所大学就读)”可知,Early Decision被接收后就可以准备上大学了。
根据NAILING YOUR COLLEGE INTERVIEW部分的“A college interview is an opportunity for you to make a personal impression on an admissions officer and increase your chances of acceptance into a college. It’s a way for you to differentiate yourself from others and show your personality in a way that you can’t on a piece of paper(大学面试是你给招生官留下个人印象并增加你被大学录取的机会。这是你将自己与他人区分开来的一种方式,以一种纸上无法展现的方式展示你的个性)”可知,要在申请过程中脱颖而出,必须在面试中展现个人特色。故选D。
B
I suspect that we socialize more during the spring and summer months. Under the warm sun, yards bloom with cold drinks and conversation, barbecues get fired up, and parties quickly spill outside. Shifting these sweet summer parties to ones that are also waste-free can be both simple and inexpensive, with just a few small changes to your habits.
The first step is to keep invitations virtual. Creating a Facebook event or sending a simple email is perfect for inviting guests to your party without generating waste from paper invitations, and if you’re looking for something a bit more formal, sites such as Greenvelope and Paperless Post have given the cheesy e-invitation a brilliant makeover. Virtual invites also allow you to track RSVPs, communicate with guests, and provide clickable information about your event.
To decorate, make use of the candles, flowers and greenery already in your outdoor space rather than stocking up on store-bought flowers, and consider using decorations that can be reused (like a cloth happy birthday banner, for example) rather than one-time use decorations. Skip the balloons in favour of large tissue paper pom-poms, and offer up any decorations still in decent condition to a free group after the event rather than just tossing them out.
The most obvious way to cut down on party waste, of course, is by getting rid of disposable plates, cups and things like that. I shouldn’t have to do much convincing in this department — does anyone actually enjoy using those paper plates that fold in half when you pile them high with too much salad or drip oil through the bottom? Has anyone in the history of the world ever actually successfully cut anything with one of those completely useless plastic knives? There really isn’t much to be gained from using disposables.
With these shifts and a few other small adjustments here and there — paper straws instead of plastic, a large drink dispenser (饮水器) rather than individual soft drinks or juice boxes — you’ll be set to celebrate all summer long, without suffering the accompanying garbage hangover the next day.
4. What does the underlined word “cheesy” in the second paragraph mean?
A. Free. B. Formal. C. Plain. D. Inviting.
5. What should we do with used decorations in good condition?
A. Donate them. B. Sell them.
C. Put them away. D. Throw them away.
6. Why does the writer dislike paper plates?
A. They’re too expensive. B. They’re not practical.
C. They’re not convincing. D. They’re not popular.
7. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. How to hold a successful garden party. B. Summer garden party habits.
C. How to hold greener summer parties . D. How to entertain your guests.
C 5. A 6. B 7. C
根据第二段“and if you’re looking for something a bit more formal, sites such as Greenvelope and Paperless Post have given the cheesy e-invitation a brilliant makeover.(如果你想要一些更正式的东西,像Greenvelope和Paperless Post这样的网站已经把cheesy的电子邀请函进行了精彩的改造)”可知,Greenvelope和Paperless Post这类网站给人耳目一新的感觉,因此这些网站是对“平淡无奇的”网络邀请函进行了出色的改造,“cheesy”一词与选项C. plain(普通的,朴实无华的)意义相近,故选C。
根据第三段的“Skip the balloons in favour of large tissue paper pom-poms, and offer up any decorations still in decent condition to a free group after the event rather than just tossing them out.(不要用气球,而要用大的纸巾做的球球;活动结束后,把任何完好无损的装饰品免费赠送给一群人,而不是直接扔掉)”可知,要使用可以重复使用的装饰品,在活动结束后,我们就可以把使用过的、保存完好的装饰品捐赠出去。故选A。
根据倒数第二段的“The most obvious way to cut down on party waste, of course, is by getting rid of disposable plates, cups and things like that. I shouldn’t have to do much convincing in this department – does anyone actually enjoy using those paper plates that fold in half when you pile them high with too much salad or drip oil through the bottom? (当然,减少聚会浪费最明显的方法就是扔掉一次性盘子、杯子之类的东西。在这个部分,我不应该做太多的说服——真的有人喜欢用那些纸盘子吗?当你把希腊沙拉摞得高高的,或者把油滴到盘子底部的时候,有人真的喜欢用那些叠成两半的纸盘子吗?)”和“There really isn’t much to be gained from using disposables.(使用一次性餐具真的没有什么用处)”可知,作者不喜欢纸盘子,因为它们不实用,故选B。
根据第一段的“Shifting these sweet summer parties to ones that are also waste-free can be both simple and inexpensive, with just a few small changes to your habits.(把这些甜蜜的夏日派对变成无浪费的派对既简单又便宜,只要改变一下你的习惯就行了)”以及下文的建议可知,这篇文章主要讲述如何举办更环保的夏季派对,选项C“How to hold greener summer parties(如何举办更环保的夏季派对)”最适合作文章标题,故选C。

Days after Argentina canceled all international passenger flights to protect the country from the new coronavirus, Juan Manuel Ballestero began his journey home the only way possible: He stepped aboard his small sailboat for an 85-day journey across the Atlantic.
The 47-year-old sailor could have stayed put on the tiny Portuguese island of Porto Santo, to ride out the times of lockdowns and social distancing in a beautiful place largely spared by the virus. But the idea of spending what he thought could be “the end of the world” away from his family, especially his father who was soon to turn 90, was unbearable. “I didn’t want to stay like a coward (懦夫) on an island where there were no cases,” Mr. Ballestero said. “I wanted to do everything possible to return home. The most important thing for me was to be with my family.”
He bought his sailboat in 2017, hoping to take it on a travel around the world. It proved up to the task of sailing across an ocean when the pandemic was spreading across the planet.
“I wasn’t afraid, but I did have a lot of uncertainty,” he said. “It was very strange to sail in the middle of a pandemic with humanity becoming increasingly less valued around me.” Sailing can be a lonely passion, and it was particularly so on this voyage for Mr. Ballestero.
Despite the expansiveness of the ocean, Mr. Ballestero felt he was in a quarantine (隔离) of sorts, imprisoned by a continuous stream of bad feelings about what the future held. “I was locked up in my own freedom,” he recalled.
When he made it to his hometown on June 17, he was startled by the hero’s welcome he received. “Entering my port where my father had his sailboat, where he taught me so many things and where I learned how to sail and where all this originated, gave me the taste of a mission accomplished,” he said.
8. What drove Mr. Ballestero eventually decide to sail back home?
A. Because he bought a sailboat.
B. Because he thought family came first.
C. Because he wanted to show his bravery.
D. Because all international flights were canceled.
9. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The sailboat. B. The pandemic.
C. The travel around the world. D. The task of sailing across the ocean.
10. How did Mr. Ballestero feel when he sailed across the ocean?
A. Afraid and sad. B. Free and relaxed.
C. Lonely and strange. D. Unsure and isolated.
11. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. A Mission Accomplished
B. A Travel across Atlantic
C. A Solo Sail towards Family
D. A Journey from Portuguese to Argentina
B 9. A 10. D 11. C
在第二段最后“I wanted to do everything possible to return home. The most important thing for me was to be with my family. (我想尽一切办法回家。对我来说,最重要的是和家人在一起)” 可知,最终驱使Mr. Ballestero 驾船回家是他对家人的爱与思念,即把家庭放在第一位驱使他回家。故选B。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“He bought his sailboat in 2017, hoping to take it on a travel around the world. It proved up to the task of sailing across an ocean when the pandemic was spreading across the planet. (他在2017年买了自己的帆船,希望能带着它环游世界。事实证明,当疫情在全球蔓延时,它能够胜任穿越海洋的任务)”可知,it指代上文提到的sailboat(帆船),即这艘帆船能够胜任穿越海洋的任务。故选A。
根据第四段的“I wasn’t afraid, but I did have a lot of uncertainty,” he said. 根据第五段的“Despite the expansiveness of the ocean, Mr. Ballestero felt he was in a quarantine (隔离) of sort,...

With intelligent systems and new-age transit networks, life in the big cities will likely be happier and more efficient.
After all, more than 60 percent of the world’s population is expected to live in cities by 2050, according to a UN report. The answer to making these cities more livable for so many people lies in creating “smart” cities. These cities will use 5G networks and the “internet of things” (IoT) to make everyday life safer and more convenient. Some cities are already using smart technology to improve the lives of residents.
But what exactly does a smart city do? In the United States cities of Boston and Baltimore, smart trash cans can sense how full they are and inform cleaning workers when they need to be emptied. In Amsterdam, the Netherlands, traffic flow and energy usage are monitored and adjusted according to real-time data gathered from sensors (传感器) around the city. And in Copenhagen, Denmark, a smart bike system allows riders to check on air quality and traffic condition as they ride.
Smart cities will be interactive, allowing their residents to feel like they’re truly shaping their environment, instead of merely existing in it. “One of the most important reasons to have a smart city is that we can actually communicate with our environment in a way that we never have in the past,” said Mrinalini Ingram, head of a telecom company.
“Smart cities will also allow us to save resources.” said Mrinalini Ingram.“By using sensors and 5G networks to monitor the use of water, gas and electricity, city managers can figure out how to distribute and save these resources more efficiently. Emissions of carbon dioxide and other air pollutants can be more closely monitored in smart cities as well.”
Of course, it will take time and money to turn our current cities into the smart cities of the future. But as we’ve already seen, more cities around the world are already adopting smart technology in small ways. China, for instance, is making investments in big cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou to make them “smarter”. It won’t be long until even more cities start to develop their own smart infrastructure
12. What calls for the development of smart cities?
A. The rapid progress in 5G networks.
B. The marked increase in world population.
C. The growing number of residents living in cities.
D The major concern over the safety of living in cities.
13. How does the author explain the way smart cities work?
A. By making a contrast.
B. By giving examples.
C. By listing figures.
D. By telling a story.
14. What can we learn from Mrinalini Ingram about smart cities?
A. Air pollution will be stopped in its track.
B. People will be better aware of environmental protection.
C. People will be able to make the most of our environment at will.
D. Resources can be saved by keeping track of how they are used.
15. What is the author’s attitude toward smart cities?
A. Indifferent. B. Critical. C. Positive. D. Doubtful.
C 13. B 14. D 15. C
根据第二段“After all, more than 60 percent of the world’s population is expected to live in cities by 2050, according to a UN report. The answer to making these cities more livable for so many people lies in creating “smart” cities. (毕竟,根据联合国的一份报告,到2050年,预计全球60%以上的人口将居住在城市。让这些城市更适合这么多人居住的答案在于创造“智能”城市。)”可知因为越来越多的居民居住在城市里,需要创造智能城市。故选C。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“But what exactly does a smart city do? In the United States cities of Boston and Baltimore, smart trash cans can sense how full they are and inform cleaning workers when they need to be emptied. In Amsterdam, the Netherlands, traffic flow and energy usage are monitored and adjusted according to real-time data gathered from sensors (传感器) around the city. And in Copenhagen, Denmark, a smart bike system allows riders to check on air quality and traffic condition as they ride.
根据第五段“ “Smart cities will also allow us to save resources.” said Mrinalini Ingram. “By using sensors and 5G networks to monitor the use of water, gas and electricity, city managers can figure out how to distribute and save these resources more efficiently. Emissions of carbon dioxide and other air pollutants can be more closely monitored in smart cities as well.” (“智能城市还能让我们节约资源。”姆里纳利尼·英格拉姆说。“通过使用传感器和5G网络来监测水、气和电的使用情况,城市管理者可以找出如何更有效地分配和节约这些资源。在智能城市中,二氧化碳和其他空气污染物的排放也可以得到更密切的监测。”) ”可推断通过跟踪资源的使用情况可以节省资源。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Of course, it will take time and money to turn our current cities into the smart cities of the future. But as we’ve already seen, more cities around the world are already adopting smart technology in small ways. China, for instance, is making investments in big cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou to make them “smarter”. It won’t be long until even more cities start to develop their own smart infrastructure
We all suffer from stress from to time. At work or at home, there are times when our stress levels get too high. So how are your strategies for dealing with it? We interviewed some psychologists, and asked them for their practical strategies for getting through these difficult periods, and here is the advice they gave.
1. Identify the cause
If you are having problems with tense muscles, overtiredness, headaches or migraines, it is quite possibly stress-related. Is it your job, relationship, living situation or something else? Problems can be divided into three categories: those with a practical solution, those that will get better with time and those outside your control.___16___
2. Move your body
Exercise won't cure your stress, but it can help to clear your head and make you feel as if you're gaining some control. Try something new: yoga may be calming, but there's nothing more thrilling than hitting a punchbag. Don't exacerbate the stress by drinking, smoking and downing double espressos.___17___
3. Talk it through
If you are the kind of person who is open to advice, find a friend to have a moan with. Friends can work as a support group, sounding board and–if there is some obvious solution you haven' t considered yet - they may provide you with solutions.___18___
4. Ditch the phone
This doesn't mean put it on "do not disturb" and look at it less:___19___ Put it in a drawer an hour before bed and ignore it - have a bath watch a film or read a book. You won't check your work emails and you will stop scrolling through the sccmingly endless achievements of your peers that will make you panic and feel as if you are getting nowhere. Breathe.
5. Make a list
Having too much to do may cause you to flail around because, if you are moving faster, it feels as if you are getting done - but this is a false impression. Make a to-do list.___20___ That way, you will approach the big things already feeling good.
A. Everyone knows that is not a proper solution.
B. Learn to focus on the first kind; ignore the others.
C. Stress can be useful at times, so try to learn to welcome it.
D. Imagine yourself lying on a beach, or in some other pleasant, peaceful place.
E. These aren't fixes, and they will only make you feel physically and mentally worse.
F. Do the big, important things last, after you have achieved several of the small things.
G. Sometimes, you can't see the easy way out of a situation when you are standing right in the middle of it.
B 17. E 18. G 19. A 20. F
根据上一句“Problems can be divided into three categories: those with a practical solution, those that will get better with time and those outside your control.” 因此,B项“Learn to focus on the first kind; ignore the others.(学会专注于第一种,忽略其他的)”切题,作者建议专注于第一种有实际解决方案的问题。
根据上一句“Don’t exacerbate the stress by drinking, smoking and downing double espressos.(不要因为喝酒、抽烟和喝两杯浓缩咖啡而加重压力)”可知,作者认为,喝酒、抽烟或者喝浓咖啡都不能使人放松,反而会加重压力。因此,E项 “These aren’t fixes, and they will only make you feel physically and mentally worse.(这些都不是解决办法,它们只会让你在身体和精神上感觉更糟)”切题。
根据上一句 “Friends can work as a support group, sounding board and—if there is some obvious solution you haven’t considered yet —they may provide you with solutions.(朋友们可以作为一个支持小组,一个共鸣板——如果有一些你还没有考虑过的明显的解决方案,他们可能会给你提供解决方案)”可知,作者认为,当遇到解决不了的问题的时候,可以咨询一些朋友,他们可能会有一些你没有想到的解决方案。因此,G项“Sometimes, you can't see the easy way out of a situation when you are standing right in the middle of it.(有时候,当你站在困境中时,你看不到走出困境的捷径。)”
根据上一句“This doesn’t mean put it on “do not disturb” and look at it less”以及下一句“Put it in a drawer an hour before bed and ignore it — have a bath, watch a film or read a book”可知,作者建议睡前一小时不要看手机,把它放在抽屉里,利用这个时间洗个澡、看电影或看书,因为,人人都知道,一直看手机并不能解决问题,于事无补。因此,A项“Everyone knows that is not a proper solution.(人人都知道这不是一个恰当的解决方法)”切题,该选项与上文构成因果关系,故选A项。
根据上一句“Having too much to do may cause you to flail around because, if you are moving faster, it feels as if you are getting done — but this is a false impression. Make a to-do list.” 以及下一句“That way, you will approach the big things already feeling good.” 因此,F选项 “Do the big important things last, after you have achieved several of the small things.(在你完成了几件小事之后,最后做重要的大事)”切题,选项中的 “big important things”与下文中的“the big things”相呼应,故选F项。

Frog is a wise and brave frog, living happily with his neighbors as well as good friends – Duck, Pig, Hare and Rat. One day, dark clouds were gathering in the sky, hiding the sun from view. “It’s going to rain,” thought Frog happily. The first drops were already falling on his bare skin. Frog loved the rain. He danced for joy as the raindrops fell thick and fast, which was a bit too much even for Frog.
He ran home dripping wet and made himself a nice hot cup of tea. The raindrops pattered against the window but it was cozy inside. After three days of rain however, Frog began to feel restless. He wondered how his friends were, because he hadn’t seen them since the rain started.
On the fifth day, the river began to rise. It wasn’t long before water came streaming into Frog’s house. Full of worry, he hurried over to Duck’s house only to find it was flooded as well. Wading (蹚) through the watery landscape, they decided to go to Pig’s house. Pig was leaning out of his attic (阁楼) window. “All my things are wet,” he cried desperately. The room was in a mess, with tables and chairs floating around. “Let’s go and see Hare,” suggested Frog.
Hare’s house was on an island in the middle of the water. Hare stood at the door and waved to them. “Come inside” he shouted. “It’s dry in here.” Gratefully, they dried themselves in front of the stove and told Hare how their houses had been flooded. Hare invited them to stay as there’s plenty of room and plenty of food in the house. So they all sat down to a big pot of stew (炖菜) Hare had made. So hungry were they that they ate everything up. Then they settled down to a cosy evening and stayed there for days, while outside it kept raining.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Then, one day, they found they only had one loaf of bread left. Deeply worried, they were sitting in dead silence when Frog stood up and offered to find food. He headed for the door, stepped out and jumped into the bitterly cold water, without hesitation. Unfortunately, in the midway, he ran into a whirlpool and kept going round in circles at great speed. Noticing that heavier objects went down more quickly, he swiftly grasped a barrel nearby, tied himself to it and tried to flee. Finally, he made it to the Rat’s, where he found abundant food as well as a boat, and hurried back to the Hare’s.
Pig, Duck and Hare cheered when they saw Frog return in a boat. Seeing his friends, Frog waved with great excitement, “I’ve brought us a lot of food.” As soon as the boat landed, the three grabbed Frog’s arms, gave him a hug and cheered, “You are a real hero!Hearing this, Frog was glowing with pride. That night, they held a party, swallowed a big meal and fell into a sound sleep. The next thing they knew was morning, when the rain stopped and the sun came out, casting a red glow over the village.
