Twice every month, Miranda Sam, a 66-year-old Ghanaian, visited the China Traditional Herbal Hospital, a private herbal facility at Pokuase, a suburb of the Ghanaian capital, for treatment.
“I was squeezing lemons, and when I finished, I could not get up or even move my legs, so I went to the hospital and did an X-ray examination, but they saw nothing. Meanwhile, I could not walk and was in a wheelchair,” the retired worker said. Hence Miranda decided to visit the herbal facility. “On two occasions, I had to do acupuncture (针灸), and I have found great relief. Now I walk unaided, so I keep coming for treatment,” she said.
As Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is gaining popularity in Ghana, many acupuncture clinics run by Chinese doctors pop up in the country. However, the China Traditional Herbal Hospital was established by 52-year-old Ghanaian business owner Bediako, after his fruitful encounter with the effects of TCM in 2012. With the help of a Chinese lady, Bediako set up a small clinic specializing in TCM. Years on, the facility has subsequently grown into a bigger herbal hospital. The hospital treats patients with a combination of local and Chinese herbal formulas. It supports this with the application of traditional Chinese medical methods.
Strokes (中风) account for 1.3 percent of all hospital admissions in Ghana, and 6.3 percent of all hospital deaths. But Bediako is confident that as more people with these conditions turn to the natural methods of healing, the pain and death rates would subside. “A gentleman was brought here three weeks ago, who could not sit, stand, or walk. He was first taken through acupuncture. I observed him on camera 30 minutes later, squatting (蹲), standing, and walking. You come here with your pain but will leave with a smile. That is our feature,” he said.
The hospital has started a second facility in Ashaiman near the capital, with plans to open other branches across the country to meet the growing demand.
4. What can we learn from Miranda’s words in Paragraph 2?
A. Her illness is not a bit severe. B. She is feeling better now.
C. Squeezing lemons is a risky job. D. She is unsure about what to do next.
5. What do we know about Bediako’s hospital?
A. It is located in the downtown area. B. It was originally a specialized clinic.
C. It uses nothing but Chinese herbs. D. It was established by a Chinese doctor.
6. What does the underlined word “subside” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Decline. B. Remain. C. Climb. D. Change.
7. What’s the writer’s probable attitude towards the TCM in Ghana?
A. Negative. B. Uncertain. C. Concerned. D. Optimistic.

In a coffee shop, we usually hear someone saying, “Don’t worry; the cup is made of bioplastics (生物塑料)!” These items are appearing everywhere, ensuring business owners and consumers feel good about the single-use items they are carrying around. The problem is that there’s a lot of misinformation about bioplastics — and unfortunately, bioplastics aren’t the perfect solution to the problem of plastic people think they are.
“Anytime you add the term ‘bio’ or ‘plant-based’ to a product name or description, people automatically think that makes them good for the planet,” environment expert and consultant Shannon Kenny said. “But unless you have proper equipment to process and recycle these bioplastics, they can be just as harmful to the planet as traditional plastics.” In order for bioplastic
items to break down, they need the perfect storm of gases, heat and airflow that is only provided by specific equipment. And since most of us probably don’t have the commercial equipment, we may not know what to do with the products.
Since they look like plastic, people often think they can be recycled, which isn’t true. According to Kenny, “Consumers often dispose of (丢弃) bioplastics in recycling bins, but it messes the whole process up. When bioplastics enter the plastic recycling stream, they’re difficult to identify and separate from the other plastics, which damages the entire recycling process and creates a low-grade recycled plastic.”
So if plastic isn’t great, but bioplastics aren’t either, what should we use? The most sustainable solution in both the short term and the long run, though, is to avoid single-use items. The best choice is to bring your own cup to the coffee shop and your own cutlery (餐具) to the office to eat your salad or out to dinner at your favorite fast-casual restaurant. And educate others — friends, family, and even your local coffee shop or restaurant owners — that these bioplastics aren’t as “green” as they may appear.
8. What does Shannon Kenny think of bioplastics?
A. They are environment-friendly.
B. They cost customers less to use.
C. They increase the cost of production.
D. They are no better than common plastics.
9. What is the challenge about bioplastics?
A. They can’t be broken down completely.
B. Consumers prefer to use traditional plastics.
C. They can’t be processed or recycled properly.
D. Consumers can’t tell them from other plastics.
10. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. Add some background information. B. Provide some advice for the readers.
C. Summarize the previous paragraphs. D. Introduce a new topic for discussion.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Why are bioplastics harmful?
B. Can bioplastics be widely used?
C. Are bioplastics better for the planet?
D. How are bioplastics made pollution-free?

A research project called Mineral has created robots that move around in farm fields, collecting information about how plants are growing. The Mineral project is run by a company called X, which is created by Alphabet — the same company that owns Google. X often focuses on projects with big goals that seem almost impossible at first.
With the number of people on earth getting bigger each year, more and more food needs to be grown in order to feed everyone. As weather patterns continue to change because of the climate
crisis, this task is becoming even more difficult. Some experts say that more food will need to be
grown over the next 50 years than in the last 10,000 years. Above all, X’s employees give special attention to the man-made problems and try to persuade farmers to support their greener plans. When farmers have tried to quickly increase the amount they produce, they’ve used methods that aren’t always good for the nature — more fields, fertilizers, and pesticides.
Mineral’s team spent several years talking to farmers to see what problems they were having and how these problems might be fixed. That led to the creation of special robots, called “plant buggies”, which collect detailed information about crops. At first, the buggies were very simple. They were built on bicycles and took pictures with cell phones. Over time, they’ve been improved repeatedly. The plant buggies roll on four wheels and are high enough to glide (滑行) over rows of plants without hurting them. They have strong wheels, allowing them to roll through muddy fields and uneven roads easily. They can even do things humans can’t, like counting all of the small buds on a plant.
Before, farmers had information about the soil and the weather, but they couldn’t track every plant. Now, with Mineral’s robots, they can. By collecting lots of information like this, Mineral believes computers can help farmers make predictions about how their plants will grow. For example, if robots can detect which plants have diseases, farmers can quickly get rid of these plants before they ruin the entire crop.
12. Which word can best describe the company X?
A. Ambitious. B. Productive. C. Potential. D. Profitable.
13. Which of the following will be the focus of the company X?
A. To solve the climate crisis.
B. To improve the food quality.
C. To control the increasing population.
D. To promote the environmentally-friendly method.
14. What can we infer from the “plant buggies”?
A. They will replace farmers. B. They have great mobility.
C. They are designed by local farmers. D. They can draw pictures of plants.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. How to detect plants’ diseases.
B. How to build the “plant buggies”.
C. The Mineral project uses robots to help farmers.
D. The Mineral project uses computers to make predictions.
第二节 (共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Your preschooler is painting with fingers. Trying to be encouraging, you ask her, “What are you making with this mix of colors?” and she shrugs. Until you mentioned it, she hadn’t given it any thought. 16 They love the way it feels when they pour paint on paper, how it looks when they wildly drop glitter, and even the soft sound a brush makes as it crosses the page.
Most preschoolers aren’t self-conscious about what they’re doing or focused on creating a finished product. 17 But letting go — and allowing kids to enjoy the process of creation — can harvest big rewards. Children will be better off in the long run if they’re allowed just to be in the moment and express themselves.
Fostering (培养) creativity won’t just increase your child’s chances of becoming the next Picasso. 18 As kids use a paintbrush, their fine motor skills improve. By counting pieces and colors, they learn the basics of math. When children experiment with materials, they dive in science. Most important perhaps, when kids feel good while they are creating, art helps boost self-confidence.
19 Set up an art space where your kid can be free to experiment. Throw a drop cloth or a newspaper on top of your kitchen table or in the garage.Weather permitting, let kids paint outside. Avoid giving directions. Don’t tell your kid what to make or how to make it. Instead of saying, “Paint a rainbow,” encourage her to “experiment with mixing colors using different types of brushes and paper.” When a child finishes a piece, don’t suggest additions or changes. 20___
- So just prepare for a mess.
- Preschoolers like to be alone.
- Little kids are masters of the moment.
- That can be hard for parents to accept.
- Remember to warn them against their careless mistakes.
- You’re also helping him develop mentally, socially, and emotionally.
- Let your child feel her creation is enough — even if it’s just a dot on the page.

I am a proud mother of three children, my last little one being delivered in the middle of this pandemic. She was born in August and her name is Lisa.
Shortly after having Lisa, my mother-in-law Sarah showed me something she learned from her friend’s mother in an art class she attended weekly. She had showed me how to knit (编织) a scarf. She showed me stitches (针) and gave me her half-done project.
I spent a lot of time breastfeeding my sweet little girl, so I had some extra time to do something with my hands throughout the day. I enjoyed making the scarf so I purchased tons of yarn (线) since it was winter. I wanted to make scarves for my three children as Christmas gifts.
There was a new family that moved in down the street. The only daughter of the family was Emily, a shy girl, aged 14, the same age of my oldest son David. It seemed that she came from a financially disadvantaged family, for she always wore old clothes. Worse still, in such cold days, she had no more clothes to wear and trembled with cold.
Due to the pandemic, society was thrown into crisis mode. Schools were closed, food supplies and deliveries were suspended and children were stuck at home. In such discouraging times, however, they became good companions, walking and playing at home or around the houses.
It was dreadfully cold this winter. Every time David came back from outside, with red face, he always cried, “Mum, it is freezing outside!” Then, he came over to see whether I finished the scarf. I could tell how impatient he was to wear my scarf sooner! I had to speed the project to satisfy his expectation. But David comforted me saying he could wait a few days. What a kind and considerate boy he was! Then my great art project finally was accomplished on the morning ahead of Christmas.

Good morning, everyone. I’m Li Hua. It’s my great honor to stand here to deliver my speech.

Before leaving, I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to my teachers. It was they who patiently answered our endless questions. Besides, I owe many thanks to my dear classmates. Without their help and encouragement, I couldn’t have overcome so many difficulties.
Now we have been determined to lead a more meaningful life in university and I will live up to the expectations of my teachers and my parents. Thank you for your listening.
第二节(满分25分)
One possible version:
I wrapped the scarf around David’s neck. David’s face lit up with joy. Stroking the scarf softly, David excitedly kissed me in the neck, beaming at me “Thank you, Mum. This is the best gift I have ever received.” Before I could say anything, he dashed out to join Emily with a spring in his step. I felt relieved and content as a mother, seeing David play happily outside, with the scarf sheltering him to brave the bone-chilling wind. Wearing a smile on his face, I continued my chores that morning.
Later that day David came back saying Emily also deserved a scarf. Obviously, David noticed Emily could hardly bear the freezing weather with worn-out clothes. “Can I give this to Emily as a Christmas gift?” David ventured in a low voice. Smilingly, I nodded. Seeing David rush into Emily’s house with the scarf in his hand, I felt a burst of pride. I was happy that both of them received the best gift for Christmas. For Emily - a scarf to keep warm and for David — a taste of happiness of giving.
