阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Different countries celebrate Christmas in different ways. We asked some of our friends to explain what happens in their countries. This is what they told us:
France
In France, Christmas is always called Noël. Everyone has a Christmas tree, sometimes decorated in the old way with red ribbons and real white wax candles. Fir trees in the garden are often decorated too with lights on all night.
Father Christmas is called Père Noël. The Christmas meal is an important family gathering with good meat and the best wine. Few people send Christmas cards. More people send New Year cards to wish everyone good luck and joy for the New Year. These days Christmas lunch is a starter of foie gras (a strong tasting pate made from goose liver) followed by lunch of seafood — usually including lobsters and oysters.
New Zealand
Christmas starts for us with gifts under the tree, to be opened on Christmas morning. Then it’s onto a Christmas lunch either at home or at one’s parents place. Turkey or chicken with all the trimmings (佐料) is eaten. Then comes tea time. It is a BBQ for friends and family to get together, and have a few beers or wines with the meal!
Russia
In the days of the Soviet Union, Christmas was not celebrated very much. New Year was the important time — when “Father Frost” brought presents to children. With the fall of Communism, Christmas can be openly celebrated either on December 25th; or more often on January 7th. This unusual date is because the Russian Orthodox church uses the old “Julian” calendar for religious celebration days. Special Christmas food includes cakes, pies and “meat dumplings”.
Sweden
The most important day is Christmas Eve. A special Christmas meal is eaten on Christmas Eve — ham (pork), herring fish, and brown beans — and this is the time when families give presents to each other. Many people attend a church meeting early on Christmas Day.
21. Why do people in France send New Year cards?
A. To tell their friends the New Year is coming.
B. To ask for some special presents.
C. To invite their friends to family gathering.
D. To send their friends best wishes and happiness for the New Year.
22. What do they have in common when celebrating Christmas?
A. A special meal is prepared.
B. Everyone has a Christmas tree.
C. Parents give gifts to their children.
D. People attend a church gathering.
23. Which country celebrates Christmas “twice”?
A. France. B. New Zealand. C. Sweden. D. Russia.
B
When we moved into our home in Maui, Hawaii, 16 years ago, one good thing about this house was the huge avocado tree growing in the backyard.
This tree gave the most delicious avocados I have ever tasted. I lived on these avocados when nursing my first child. Fresh avocado was the very first food for my kids. This tree was so huge that it cast a massive shadow over our backyard. It was truly our magical tree.
Until one day, someone from the Health Department came to tell us that our avocado tree was too large and needed trimming. In New York, you get in trouble if you don’t clear the snow off your sidewalk. Here, it’s when your trees are too high. So along came the trimmer, leaving just the trunk and a few branches. I was sad. The kids were all sad. Some friends who knew it would say, “It’s going to grow back. Your next avocados will be crazy!” Yeah, whatever. The tree is gone, so stop doing that. It just didn’t work.
But a few days later, I noticed some unusual butterflies flying around the yard. And then, the sun came in the kitchen, creating this pleasant warmth once blocked by the huge tree. After about a month, I started to notice some tiny green shoots coming out of the cut branches, which eventually turned into full-on bright green leaves.
I started to feel like all was going to be fine, kind of like life. Little do we know what seems really difficult is actually life’s way of making us stronger. It’s life’s way of bringing in the butterflies, the sunshine, and the delightful flowers. We all know that saying, “It will be OK in the end. If it’s not, it’s not the end.”
24. What is mainly conveyed in paragraph 2 about the avocado tree?
A. Her kids’ love for it. B. Its fruit’s good taste.
C. Her expectation of it. D. Its benefits for her family.
25. Why did the author’s friends say the words in paragraph 3?
A. To laugh at her. B. To cheer her up.
C. To show their regret. D. To express their excitement.
26. What happened to the avocado tree in the end?
A. It had no branches. B. It blocked the sunshine.
C. It was full of life again. D. It bore more avocados.
27. What message does the author seem to convey in the text?
A. You harvest what you sow. B. Luck and Misfortune comes in turn.
C. Success won’t come unless you go to it. D. The important thing in life is to have a dream.
C
Scientists have been studying Antarctica for over a century, but details as basic as what it looks like beneath all that ice have largely remained a mystery. Now, Earther reports that a team of scientists from Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, and the UK has published the most detailed data yet on the continent's subglacial topography (冰川下的地形)near the South Pole.
As they report in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, central Antarctica is home to three large canyons (峡谷), one of which is deeper than the Grand Canyon and nearly as wide at some points. The researchers made the discovery by flying a plane with radar over the South Pole, a spot that isn't covered by satellites. They expected to find mountains beneath the ice sheet, but the wide canyons they found between the mountains came as a surprise.
Of the three canyons, two hadn't been documented previously. The largest, the Foundation Trough (基础槽),measures 218 miles long, up to 22 miles wide, and 6,260 feet deep, putting it up there with the planet's most impressive canyons.
The discoveries are significant on their own, but the real purpose behind the research is to better understand how the West and East Antarctic ice sheets will react to rising temperatures. Human-caused climate change has made some of the continent's ice not firm, and the West Antarctic ice sheet especially has been slowly melting to the sea. If patterns continue, the coastal glaciers supporting the large ice sheets could fall down, causing sea levels to rise a minimum of 10 feet. If this happens, the canyons could be a major factor in the speed and direction of ice flow from central Antarctica to the coast.
The event isn't likely to happen in the near future, but further study o£ Antarctica's topography will allow scientists to better predict when it might.
28. Which of the following have scientists known little?
A. The shape of Antarctica ice.
B. The condition of Antarctica ice.
C. The Grand Canyon.
D. The beneath of Antarctica ice.
29. Which of the following is found by a plane with radar?
A. The Grand Canyon. B. The mountains.
C. Three large canyons. D. Ice sheets.
30. How do the scientists feel about finding the wide canyons?
A. Unexpected. B. Interesting.
C. Ridiculous. D. Common.
31. What's the aim of the study?
A. To document the three canyons.
B. To find out how large the three canyons are.
C. To know how ice sheets react to rising temperatures.
D. To show the importance of the three canyons.
D
“Siri, what’s the weather like in San Francisco?”
“Today’s forecast for San Antonio is…”
“No. San FRAN-CIS-CO!!”
“The tapper Sisqo was born in Baltimore, Maryland.”
Sometimes, talking to an artificially intelligent robot is, well, not so intelligent.
Yobav Shoham, the Stanford computer science professor, said, “AI has made truly amazing progress in the past decade, but computers still can’t exhibit the common sense or the general intelligence of even a 5-year-old.” Yann LeCun, a French scientist, put it more simply. “We’re very far from having machines that can learn the most basic things about the world in the way humans and animals can do. In particular areas machines have superhuman performance, but in terms of general intelligence they’re not even close to a rat,” he explained.
Oren Etzioni, an Israeli scientist, said, “There’s a brand of science fiction (小说) that’s very dystopian (反面乌托邦的). These works of fiction talk about how the world is going to get much worse. I’m too much of an optimist to get a lot of pleasure out of reading such stories.”
However, robots are becoming smarter. Indeed, our homes are becoming more intelligent when we place devices like the Amazon Echo and Google Hothe on our kitchen counter. But at least for the moment anyway, we shouldn’t feel intimidated by this artificial intelligence.
There are robots that move like animals and robots that offer guidance. There’s even a robot that can paint a picture of Einstein and a robot that can fold your laundry. Robots are not taking over the world yet. So for now, we can simply sit back and relax. And have a robot waiter pour us a drink.
32. What does the dialogue at the beginning of, the text tell us?
A. Robots aren’t as smart as we expect.
B. It isn’t easy to forecast the weather correctly.
C. A speaker may be misunderstood by another.
D. Weather is a good subject to start a conversation.
33. What do the scientists think about the artificially intelligent robots now?
A.They have superhuman performance in kitchen tasks.
B. They have the common sense of a 5-year-old.
C. They can only learn the basic things of humans.
D. They are still poor at general intelligence.
34. How did Oren find the dystopian science fiction?
A. Pleasant. B. Typical. C. Realistic. D. Controversial.
35. What does the underlined word “intimidated” mean?
A. Comforted. B. Astonished. C. Threatened. D. Disappointed.

Reading poetry can be challenging, but learning how to carefully move through a poem is also very rewarding,____36____ But, by following the tips below, anyone can have the deeply rewarding experience of connecting to a great poem.
Sound abounds (有许多). Poetry is made to be heard. You're probably familiar with rhyming poems:roses are red, violets are blue. . . but there are many sound elements that poets use not only to make the poem sound beautiful, but to enhance the meaning or intention of a poem. ____37____What do you notice about how it sounds? ____38____Many poems may use words or reference places or times in history that may be unfamiliar to you. Be curious enough to look up all the words and references that you're unfamiliar with. You should also gather information about the poet, what was happening in their lives, and what was going on in the world around them. All of these can offer essential context to bring the poem to life.
Analyze the figurative (比喻的) language in the poem. Figurative language could be words that are repeated often in the poem or words that rhyme in each stanza (节). To get more into the figurative meaning of the poem, you should look at how the poet use literary devices like metaphor, simile, and imagery. ____39____
Finally, you don't have to understand it to engage with it and enjoy it If you like the way a poem sounds when you read it aloud, but don't know what it “means," that's OK! ____40____The great thing about art is that it can have lots of different meanings or seemingly no meaning at all and can still be enjoyed. One holiday, my cousins and I decided to play a trick on my grandma. We planned to do it —not because we didn't like her. She was the sweetest grandma a kid could ever have, and we really loved her. We decided to play the trick just wanting to have some fun. And at that time, to our mind, it was just a harmless little kids' trick.
Early in the evening of that holiday, we began our trick. We secretly walked up to her doorstep with a can of red paint. Grandma was hard of hearing. So we didn't have to worry about being very quiet. Every time we thought about how funny it would be to see Grandma try to pick up a gift that was just painted on her doorstep, we couldn't stop laughing. It didn't take long to finish painting the gift two red roses. It wasn't very artistic. But for us little farm kids and an old woman with poor eyesight, it would do.
As soon as we were satisfied with the painting, we knocked on the door and ran to hide behind bushes and trees to watch the fun. There was a lot of giggling going on as we waited for Grandma to open the door. When she finally appeared, she stood in the doorway for a minute. She looked into the darkness, with her gray hair pulled back tightly into her usual style, wiping her hands on her usual white apron. And she said, “Who could be knocking at my door this hour of the night?” Hearing it, my stomach and cheeks ached from trying to hold back the laughter. Then she looked down at her doorstep. Even from fifteen meters away, we could see the joy that shone in her eyes when she spotted the red gift at her feet.
“Oh, how wonderful!” she called out happily. “A holiday gift for Grandma! I thought I was going to be forgotten again this year!”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
