The first time I realized that I had a love for sports competitions was during Field Day in elementary school.

Small for my age, and more of a bookworm than a sports enthusiast, I had suffered that special humiliation of being picked last for various gym teams. But Field Day, which focused on individual skills, was different.

In the softball throw event, I got my first taste of sporting victory. Credit goes to the example of my first coach, my father. He lifted weights every morning at home. He bought us all baseball gloves and hats, and in the warm months, we spent hours playing catch. With the fall coming, our backyard football games began with passing practice.

Once I got to sixth grade and switched(转换) to private school, our entire student body was assigned to either the red team or the white team. Throughout the year, we competed against each other in various games and exercises for points. I eventually became president of The Committee of Games, accelerating my competitive fever. However, in girls' sports games at my school, I was no star. I also played on the field hockey team and the basketball team.

School sports did not bleed into(渗透进.)the weekends, as they do today, but at home, playing tennis, skating, skiing and biking were simply normal things we did.

During downtime, magazines were also quite popular for us teens. These regularly featured articles on physical exercise. Somehow,my college roommate and I took up the habit of completing Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) exercises every day, a practice that continued into my marriage, when we had no spare funds to use to join a gym.

So, though it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation evolved in adulthood into a sports and fitness focus, considered essential even on vacation.

I still love reading and the arts, too. As far as I'm concerned, life is richest with my feet in both worlds.

24.What does the underlined word "humiliation"mean in paragraph 2?

    A.Responsibility.  B. Disappointment. C.Shame. D.Desire.

25.What did the author owe her victory in the softball throw event to?

    A.Her advanced sports outfits.

B.Her confidence in her sports ability.

C.The sports talent inherited from her father.

    D. The guidance and training offered by her father.

26.What happened after the author stepped into adulthood?

    A.She preferred reading to exercising.

B.She maintained her love for sports.

    C. She generally exercised on weekends.

    D. She joined the Royal Canadian Air Force.

27.What is the author's purpose in writing the article?

    A. To emphasize the benefits of physical exercise.

B.To express her passion for sports and fitness.

    C. To recall her childhood memories about sports.

    D. To describe how her father developed her interest in sports.

Today, poetry and science are often considered to be mutually exclusive(互相排斥) career paths. But that wasn't always the case. The mathematician Ada Lovelace and the physicist James Clerk Maxwell were both accomplished poets. The poet John Keats was a licensed surgeon.Combining the two practices fell out of favor in the 1800s. But translating research into lyrics, haiku, and other poetic forms is resurging(再现)among scientists as they look for alternative ways to inspire others with their findings

"Poetry is a great tool for questioning the world," says Sam Illingworth, a poet and a geoscientist who works at the University of Western Australia. Through workshops and a newscience-poetry journal, called Consilience, Ilingworth is helping scientists to translate their latest results into poems that can attract appreciation from those outside of their immediate scientific field

Stephany Mazon, a scientist from the University of Helsinki in Finland, joined one of lllingworth's workshops. In the workshop, she was grouped with other scientists and tasked with writing a haiku, a 17-syllable-long poem, which spotlighted water, a fluid that featured in all of the group members' research projects."It was a lot of fun, and surprisingly easy to write the poem," Mazon says. She plans to continue writing."We do a disservice(伤害) to ourselves to think that scientists can't be artistic and that art can't be used to communicate scientific ideas,"Mazon says

That viewpoint is echoed by Illingworth, who thinks science communication initiatives are too often dominated by public lectures with their hands-off PowerPoint slides."Actually, when science communication involves writing and sharing poems, it invites a two-way dialogue between experts and nonexperts," he says. Scientist-poet Manjula Silva, an educator at Imperial College London, agrees. Poetry provides a way to translate complex scientific concepts into a language that everyone can understand, Silva says.

Scientists and poets are both trying to understand the world and communicate that understanding with others. The distinction between scientists and poets is less than people might think. We're all just people with - hopefully -- really interesting things to say and to share.

28.What is the purpose of mentioning the celebrities in paragraph 1?

    A. To display they were talented.

B.To confirm they were out of favor.

    C. To encourage different career paths.

    D. To show poetry and science can be combined.

29.What are Illingworth's workshops aimed to do?

    A.Promote a new science-poetry journal.

B.Inspire outsiders to pursue their careers in science.

    C. Encourage science communication through poems.

D.Get scientists to exchange ideas about the latest research.

30.What does Illingworth think of the dominant ways of science communication?

    A.Effective.B.Conventional.C Innovative.D.Complex.

31.Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A. Scientists Turn to Poetry

    B.Scientists and Poets Think Alike

C.Poetry: A Great Tool to Question the World

    D. Science Communication: A Two-way Dialogue

Jason, a straight-A student from the University of Pennsylvania, uses the term"pseudo-working"to describe how many of us study. The pseudo-worker looks and feels like someone who is working hard-he or she spends a long time in the library and is not afraid to push on late into the nightbut, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he or she's doesn't actually accomplish much.

This phenomenon can be seen on must college campuses. For example, at Dartmouth there was a section of the main library that was open twenty-four hours a day, and the students I used to see there late at night crowded in groups, drinking coffee, were definitely pseudo-working.The roommate who flips through her chemistry notes on the couch while watching TV is pseudo-working.

By placing themselves in distracting environments and insisting on working long hours, these students are damaging their brain's ability to think clearly and efficiently accomplish the task at hand. In the end they get half the results with twice the effort.

The bigger problem here is that most students don't even realize that they're pseudo-working.To them pseudo-working is workit's how they've always done it, and it's how all of their friends do it. It never crosses their mind that there might be a better way. Straight-A students, on the other hand, know all about pseudo-working. They fear it. It not only wastes time, but it's also mentally tiring

In fact, the most important skill in becoming a straight-A student is the ability to get work done quickly and with a minimum of wasted effort. Some cognitive science research concludes that about fifty minutes is the optimal learning period to maximize the material integrated pertime unit. So how do these students achieve this goal? To understand their secret to success, consider the following simple formula(公式): work accomplished = time spent×intensity of focus.

Pseudo-working features a very low intensity of focus. Therefore, to accomplish something by pseudo-working, you need to spend a lot of time. The straight-A approach on the other hand, increases intensity in order to use less time.

32.Which of the following phenomenon is pseudo-working?

    A. Tom is busy taking notes while attending a lecture.

    B. Alice and Sara are sitting on the couch reading their favorite books.

    C. Mike is sitting at a study lounge in preparation for a final exam quietly.

    D. Jack spends a long time in the library on his essay while listening to music.

33.Compared with straight-A students, the major problem of most students is that

    A. they want to spend more time on study

    B. they are eager to follow their friends' way

    C. they are unaware of their pseudo-working

    D. they have got used to their study approach

34.What does the underlined word "optimal"mean in paragraph 5?

    A.Best   B.Possible   C.Least   D. Accurate

    35. What does the author want to stress by mentioning the formula?

    A. The length of time on study counts.

    B. Concentration plays a key role in study.

C.Getting work done quickly means everything.

D.Effective study approach is very important.

As I was hiking, I started to reflect on how hiking was similar to other aspects of my life.40  .It reminded me of my struggles in my classes and the difficulties I had to overcome. I spotted that the process of learning isn't always the most fun, but the fulfillment after seeing how much I had finished just increases the thirst for knowledge, causing me to long for more learning.Looking down at the mountain I was content but never fully satisfied. Sam was a junior high school student. He lived in a community in Charlotte and usually had little exposure to country life. So much of what he knew about plants came from text-books. Sam was a kind-hearted person. He longed for a chance to explore nature and he wanted to do his part to beautify the world.

Finally, the opportunity came. On Arbor Day(植树节), his class organized a trip to a local village to plant trees. Sam was excited about it and couldn't wait to tell his mom the good news.So the next day, Sam and his mom went to buy some tools for planting trees, including a shovel(),a bucket, gloves and so on.

On the day of the event, Sam and his classmates arrived early at the starting point. It was abeautiful day and everyone looked particularly happy. With the tools in hand, Sam got into the bus with everyone else and headed off to their destination.

As soon as they reached the village, all the students were divided into three teams by their teacher. One team was responsible for planting the trees, one team for shoveling the soil and one team for watering the trees. At the teacher's command, everyone started to do their job.

However, it was the first time that many of the students had taken part in planting trees, so they had no idea about how to start. Of course, Sam was one of them. Fortunately, their teacher was a middle-aged man from the countryside who had some knowledge of planting trees. In order to set an example to the students, the teacher started to plant trees himself. After watching the teacher plant the trees, everyone also became busy. Before long, they planted hundreds of trees. Sam watched very carefully, not wanting to miss any of the details. Finally, Sam learned how to plant trees by himself and felt happy.

    Text 5

W:Hi, Jack!We haven’t seen each other since we last met.

    M:Yes.We haven’t met for ages!

    W:How is your job going?

M:I’ve been trying to find a new one in another company. You see, I’ve worked here for three years without a promotion.

    Text 6

W:What’s it like working with aged people all day, Mark?

M:It’s difficult because many of them need a lot of care.

W:Oh, how can you manage this?

M:Love and patience are what I need to nurse the old people.

W:What are the things you do every day?

M:I help them with meals and to some, I help them take medicine.

    W:Anything else?

M:Sometimes I also accompany them to the hospital when their relatives are not available. It’s hard work, but I really enjoy it because i love helping people.

    Text 7

    W:My Australian friend came yesterday.

    M:Great. What’s her name?

    W:Carol.

    M:What a nice name! What’s she like?

W:She’s really nice. She’s fond of dancing, so am I. And we both like tennis and listening to music.

M:That sounds great. I saw you with someone this morning. Was it Carol? What does she look like?

W:She’s quite tall and slim, and she’s got long brown hair.

M:No, it wasn’t her then. Now we are all going out tomorrow, aren’t we ?Shall we go for a coffee or shall we go to the cinema? What would she like to do?

W:Um, I’ll ask her tonight and tell you tomorrow.

    Text 8

M:Can you tell me about the accommodation, please?

W:Yes, of course. All the rooms are doubles. Some of them have a mountain view.

M:I see. Are there any family rooms?

W:No, I’m afraid not. But they can put extra beds in your room for children.

    M:And what restaurants are there?

W:There are five different restaurants—Italian, Chinese, Thai, India and America. You can eat lunch and supper in any of them, but I’m afraid you can only have breakfast in the Chinese restaurant.

M:It’s said that the center offers water sports. Can I play other sports, badminton, for example?

W:I’m sorry. I’m afraid you can’t. They only have water sports at the center.

    Text 9:

M:Hi, my name is Stephen. Do you work at New Impressions? I just started there this week—in the marketing department.

W:Sure, I think so. How is everything going in the first week?

M:So far, so good. How do you like working in New Impressions?

W:It’s a great place to work. I’m in the middle of a major project in the art department right now.

M: Yeah, I heard about it in the interview. But do you like working for Ms. White?

    W:Oh, she’s great.

M:She seemed so businesslike in the interview, but everyone else seemed so informal.

W:That’s probably for the interview. Actually, she’s pretty easy-going. And it’s not all business. We do a monthly get-together and do something fun—a Friday afternoon party, see a movie or play a ball game.

    Text 10:

W:Well, I have always loved to travel. I still remember the first place I visited was Africa, where there was no running water or toilet, but it did not matter to me. I loved the excitement of seeing animals run freely in the wild. It was so wonderful. I also remember vividly the adventure of camping. Since my visit to Africa, I have visited many other places: Australia, China, Indonesia, America and Peru. I plan to visit Japan and Russia. People often ask me why I love to travel. How could anyone not love travelling? There is always such an attraction in seeing new things, meeting new people and tasting new foods. However, I must admit it’s expensive to travel. There are so many costs of travelling. I have to pay for the hotel room, food and transportation. Also, the admission fees of tourist attractions are usually high. So, I have spent a lot of money travelling. Although I complain about the high costs of travelling, I wouldn’t spend my money and other ways. I really love to travel.
