    A
The River Nile stretches more than 4,000 miles between Lake Victoria and the Mediterranean Sea. Out of all that length, the relatively short section between Aswan and Luxor in southern Egypt is the most fascinating. Read on for the main temples to visit on the journey down the Nile between Aswan and Luxor.
    Philae Temple
This gorgeous Greco-Egyptian temple to the goddess Isis is easily reached by boat from Aswan. It was torn apart and moved to its current island location as part of the UNESCO project to save Nubia’s ancient monuments from the rising waters of Lake Nasser.
    Abu Simbel
Although it’s not along the Nile between Aswan and Luxor, this stunning temple is often visited as a long day trip from Aswan by airplane or road. Constructed around 1260 BC, the temple was also rescued from Lake Nasser by the UNESCO project.
    Edfu Temple
One of best-preserved temples from ancient times, the Edfu Temple is where the ancients worshiped the god of the sky. Over the centuries, the temple was nearly covered by sand from the nearby desert and inaccessible due to the annual flooding of the Nile, enabling it to be preserved in such an original state.
    Temple of Karnak
The massive Temple of Karnak is both a masterpiece of ancient Egyptian architecture and one of the largest temples ever constructed anywhere on the planet. It begs two visits: once by daylight to appreciate the engineering and artistic beauty of the Great Hypostyle Hall and again after dark when the ruins come alive during a sound and light show.
    1. Which temple will be a better choice if you plan to go at night?
    A. Abu Simbel. B. Edfu Temple. C. Philae Temple. D. Temple of Karnak.
    2. What do Philae Temple and Abu Simbel have in common?
    A. They are usually reached by boat. B. They are both located on an island.
    C. They were once under the threat of floods. D. They were once pulled down and reconstructed.
    3. Why is Edfu Temple well preserved?
    A. Because it was difficult to spot and reach.
    B. Because the ancients feared the power of the god.
    C. Because it processed the beautiful scenery.
    D. Because it was protected by the UNESCO project.
根据Temple of Karnak第二句“It begs two visits: once by daylight to appreciate the engineering and artistic beauty of the Great Hypostyle Hall and again after dark when the ruins come alive during a sound and light show. (它请求两次访问:一次是在白天欣赏大柱式大厅的工程和艺术之美,另一次是在天黑之后,当废墟在声光表演中活跃起来时。)”,如果游客打算晚上去神庙,Temple of Karnak会是更好的选择。故选D项。
    【2题详解】
推理判断题。根据Edfu Temple的“Over the centuries, the temple was nearly covered by sand from the nearby desert and inaccessible due to the annual flooding of the Nile, enabling it to be preserved in such an original state. (几个世纪以来,这座寺庙几乎被附近沙漠的沙子所覆盖,而且由于尼罗河每年的洪水而无法到达,这使得它能够以如此原始的状态保存下来。)”可知,尼罗河每年都会发洪水。根据Philae Temple的第二句“It was torn apart and moved to its current island location as part of the UNESCO project to save Nubia’s ancient monuments from the rising waters of Lake Nasser. (作为联合国教科文组织保护努比亚古遗迹免受纳赛尔湖水位上升影响的项目的一部分,Philae Temple被拆了,并搬到了现在的岛屿位置)”;根据Abu Simbel的第二句“Constructed around 1260 BC, the temple was also rescued from Lake Nasser by the UNESCO project. (该寺庙建于公元前1260年左右,联合国教科文组织的项目也从纳赛尔湖中拯救了它)”中的also可知,Abu Simbel也遭遇纳赛尔湖水位上升的问题;因尼罗河每年都会发洪水,导致纳赛尔湖水位上升,两个神庙都曾遭遇过洪水的威胁。故选C项。
    【3题详解】
细节理解题。根据Edfu Temple的第二句“Over the centuries, the temple was nearly covered by sand from the nearby desert and inaccessible due to the annual flooding of the Nile, enabling it to be preserved in such an original state. (几个世纪以来,这座寺庙几乎被附近沙漠的沙子覆盖,由于尼罗河每年的洪水泛滥而无法进入,使其能够以如此原始的状态保存下来。)”可知,因为被沙漠的沙子覆盖,人们很难发现这个神庙,而且每年的洪水也导致人们很难到达这里,从而Edfu Temple神庙保存的很好。故选A项。
    B
Former truck driver Chen Xianjun played a final chord (和弦) on the guitar as he and his four band-mates — a salesperson, a farmer and two doctors — enjoyed the sunshine of early winter by West Lake in Zhejiang Province.
“Cherish your life,” Chen sang his song’s last line. Behind him was the photo of a foreigner wearing a warm smile and hugging his guitar. It was the 27-year-old man, Philip Hancock, an Australian teaching English in Chongqing, who made the warm scene come true.
Hancock died in May 2018 in Chongqing. His parents obeyed Hancock’s wish to donate his organs after death. Hancock’s liver and kidneys saved the lives of three people in the band and his corneas (角膜) made the other two regain the eyesight, including Chen.
“Last year, Red Cross officials advised that the five of us form a band in memory of Hancock. They told me that Hancock dreamed of having his own band one day,” Chen said. He accepted the advice instantly, and so did the other recipients of Hancock’s organs. “I’m more than lucky to be able to show respect for the man who gave me a second chance at a full life,” he said.
In the past year, the five “musicians” have learned various instruments. They traveled from different parts of Chongqing and Sichuan Province to meet in a studio for lessons. The Band for One, a fitting name for the group, finally gathered by the lakeside in Hangzhou on November 7 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the implementation (实施) of voluntary organ donations in China.
“I was nervous before stepping on the stage, but I think we all played our parts to the best after so many months of preparation and tension,” Chen Xianjun said. “All the recipients now have the ability to carry on with their lives, and I believe that’s exactly what Hancock wanted for us.”
    4. What can we learn from the second and third paragraphs?
    A. Hancock saved the lives of three people in the band before he died.
    B. The lives of the people in the band have changed thanks to Hancock.
    C. Chen Xianjun would have died if Hancock had not donated his organs.
    D. Hancock helped Chen Xianjun form a band while teaching in Chongqing.
    5. Which can replace the underlined word “recipients” in Paragraph 4?
    A. Receivers. B. Givers. C. Helpers. D. Supporters.
    6. What can we learn from the passage?
    A. Hancock had formed a popular band before he passed away.
    B. The band went to play in Hangzhou in memory of Hancock.
    C. The five people formed the band on Chen Xianjun’s advice.
    D. The five people in the band tried to learn various instruments.
    7. Which word best describes the five people’s attitude to Hancock?
    A. Objective. B. Pleased. C. Thankful. D. Doubtful.
B 5. A 6. D 7. C
根据第三段中“Hancock’s liver and kidneys saved the lives of three people in the band and his corneas (角膜) made the other two regain the eyesight, including Chen.(Hancock的肝脏和肾脏挽救了乐队中三人的生命,他的眼角膜使其他两人恢复了视力,其中包括陈贤军)”可知,Hancock捐赠的器官挽救了乐队中三个人的生命,还让另外两人恢复了视力,所以Hancock使他们的生活发生了改变。
根据第四段划线词前“‘Last year, Red Cross officials advised that the five of us form a band in memory of Hancock. They told me that Hancock dreamed of having his own band one day,’ Chen said. He accepted the advice instantly(陈贤军说:‘去年,红十字会官员建议我们五人组成一支乐队,纪念汉考克。他们告诉我,汉考克梦想有一天能拥有自己的乐队。’他立即接受了这个建议)”及下文“Hancock’s organs(Hancock的器官)”可知,此处指陈贤军立即接受了红十字会提议为纪念汉考克建立乐队的这个建议,其他接受Hancock器官的人也接受了这个建议,recipients意为“接受者”,故选A。
    【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“In the past year, the five ‘musicians’ have learned various instruments.(在过去的一年里,这五位‘音乐家’学习了各种各样的乐器)”可知,乐队的五个人努力学习各种乐器。
根据第四段中“‘I’m more than lucky to be able to show respect for the man who gave me a second chance at a full life,’ he said.(‘我非常幸运,能够向这个给了我第二次完整人生机会的人表示尊重。’他说)”可知,Hancock捐献的器官挽救了三个人的生命,让另外两人恢复视力,他们对Hancock持感激的态度。故选C。
    C
Stonehenge(巨石阵)may have been a prehistoric health center rather than a site for observing stars or a temple in honor of the dead, scientists said yesterday. New evidence unearthed at the World Heritage Site in more than 40 years suggests that the monument was a place where the diseased and injured went in groups, seeking cures.
After a two-week dig, scientists have concluded that Stonehenge was “the ancient healthcare centre of southern England” because of the existence of “bluestones”---the smaller columns of dolerite(辉绿岩)that formed an earlier stone structure.
By dating pieces of remains to around 7330BC, Tim Darvill, of Bournemouth University, and Goff Wainwright, of the Society of Amtiquaries have found that hunter-gatherers were at the site on Salisbury Plain 4,000 years earlier than thought. The first stage of Stonehenge, a round earthwork structure, was built around 3000BC. Professor Wainwright added: “I did not expect the degree of complexity we discovered. We’re able to say so much more about when Stonehenge was built and why---all of which changes our previous understanding of the monument.”
The research reveals the importance of the henge’s famous bluestones. Hundreds of bluestone chips gathered at the site have led the team to conclude that the bluestones were valued for their curing effects---the key reason that about 80 of them, each weighing up to 4 tons and a half, were dragged more than 150 miles from the Preseli Hills to Wiltshire. After years of research, Professors Darvill and Wainwright have concluded that, for thousands of years, the Preseli mountain range was home to magical health centers and holy wells.
Even today there are those who believe in the curing powers of the springs for coughs and heart disease, and people who use crystals and bluestones for self-curing. Radiocarbon tests have also revealed that the construction of the original bluestone circle took place around 2300BC, three centuries later than originally thought. Interestingly, on the same day died the “Amesbury Archer”---a sick traveler from the Swiss or German Alps who had an infected knee---whose remains were discovered about five miles from Stonehenge. The professors believe that he was a devoted religious person who was hoping to benefit from the curing powers of the monument.
    8. Stonehenge is recently believed to be a place for people .
    A. to recover from poor health B. to observe star movements
    C. to hold religious ceremonies D. to gather huge bluestones
    9. What can be inferred about Stonehenge from the passage?
    A. The springs could cure coughs and heart disease best.
    B. The new discovery was the same as what had been expected.
    C. Some huge bluestones were not produced at Stonehenge.
    D. The original bluestone circle was thought to be constructed around 2000BC.
    10. The sick traveler in the passage is supposed to be
    A. a devoted religious person from Stonehenge
    B. one of the earliest discoverers of Stonehenge
    C. the first explorer to test the magical power of bluestones
    D. a patient trying to cure his infection at Stonehenge
    11. Which the following might be the best title for the passage?
    A. Stonehenge: A New Place of Interest B. Stonehenge: Still Making News
    C. Stonehenge: Heaven for Adventurers D. Stonehenge: Still Curing Patients
A 9. C 10. D 11. B
由第一段第一句话“Stonehenge(巨石阵)may have been a prehistoric health center”可知,巨石阵可能是史前的健康中心。 故A正确。
由第四段第二句话the key reason that about 80 of them, each weighing up to 4 tons and a half, were dragged more than 150 miles from the Preseli Hills to Wiltshire.
由最后一段最后一句话“The professors believe that he was a devoted religious person who was hoping to benefit from the curing powers of the monument可知,教授们认为他是一个虔诚的宗教人士,希望这个著名的建筑能治愈他的疾病。所以短文中生病的旅行者应该是一个希望治愈巨石阵能治愈他传染病的病人。故选D项。
    【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文尤其是第一段“Stonehenge(巨石阵)may have been a prehistoric health center rather than a site for observing stars or a temple in honor of the dead, scientists said yesterday. New evidence unearthed at the World Heritage Site in more than 40 years suggests that the monument was a place where the diseased and injured went in groups, seeking cures”可知,科学家昨日表示,巨石阵可能是史前健康中心,而不是观察星星的场所或悼念死者的寺庙。
    D
I have frequently taught Research Methods and Design to college students at several institutions. I love teaching this course. One reason, of course, is that I enjoy thinking about research methodology (方法学) and sharing it with others. The other reason, however, is the obvious impact that it has on students. Every term, one (if not more) student tells me how taking this course has affected him/her: “I used to just read articles and believe what they said, but now I find myself asking ‘Is this true? How do they know? Is this a well designed study?” That is what I want the students to achieve in this course.
This brings to mind something written by Dorothy L. Sayers in 1948. One of her books, The Lost Tools of Learning speaks to Sayers’ thoughts on education. “By teaching our young men and women to read, we have left them at the mercy of the printed words. By the invention of the film and the radio,we have made certain that no dislike for reading shall protect them from the constant battery of words, words, words. They do not know what the words mean: they are victims to words in their emotions instead of being the masters of them in their intelligence.”
We are well past the 1940s, but her observation is still relevant. Sayers’ point is well taken. In the world of 24-hour news and social media that often resembles (类似) the Wild West, the ability to carry out evaluations has never been more important. In order to resist the distortions with which we are constantly bombed in the media, as well as be able to present a persuasive argument, we must be able to reason well, and think and give a judgement carefully.
When my students begin the Research Methods and Design course, they are generally not content to read all those research article I give. However, by the end of the course, they are excited about their newly obtained abilities.
    12. What is the author’s course goal for her students?
    A. Thinking critically. B. Reading deeply.
    C. Designing studies well. D. Questioning themselves.
    13. What did Sayers imply about education?
    A. It was boring. B. It was worrying.
C It was conventional. D. It was useless.
    14. What does the underlined word “distortions” in paragraph 3 refer to?
    A. Popular news. B. Various evaluations.
    C. Persuasive arguments. D. Misleading information.
    15. Why does the author write the text?
    A. To review a book. B. To introduce a writer.
    C. To suggest a practical skill. D. To criticize social media.
A 13. B 14. D 15. C
由第一段中的“Every term, one (if not more) student tells me how taking this course has affected him/her: “I used to just read articles and believe what they said, but now I find myself asking ‘Is this true? How do they know? Is this a well designed study?’”(每学期,一名(如果不是更多的话)学生都会告诉我这门课程对他/她有何影响:“我过去只是读文章,相信他们说的话,但现在我发现自己在问‘这是真的吗?他们怎么知道的?这是一项精心设计的研究吗?’)”和第三段中的“In order to resist the distortions with which we are constantly bombed in the media, as well as be able to present a persuasive argument, we must be able to reason well, and think and give a judgement carefully. (为了抵制媒体不断用歪曲的事实轰炸我们,并且能够提出一个有说服力的论点,我们必须能够很好地推理,仔细地思考和作出判断)”可知,第一段学生说的话表明,学生听完老师的课,学会对所读文章进行反思,质疑文章的真实性等,结合第三段作者建议人们仔细地思考再作出判断,说明批判性思考正是作者想让学生在她的课上学到的。故选A项。
由第二段中的“By teaching our young men and women to read, we have left them at the mercy of the printed words. By the invention of the film and the radio, we have made certain that no dislike for reading shall protect them from the constant battery of words, words, words. They do not know what the words mean: they are victims to words in their emotions instead of being the masters of them in their intelligence.(通过教我们的年轻男女阅读,我们让他们听任印刷文字的摆布。通过电影和收音机的发明,我们已经确定,对阅读的厌恶不会保护他们免受文字、文字、文字的不断冲击。他们不知道文字的含义:他们情感上是文字的受害者,而不是在智力上是文字的主人)”可知,Sayers认为教育让年轻男女听任印刷文字的摆布,他们情感上是文字的受害者,在智力上未成为文字的主人,说明当时的教育状况是令人担忧的。故选B项。
    【14题详解】
词句猜测题。由第二段中的“By the invention of the film and the radio, we have made certain that no dislike for reading shall protect them from the constant battery of words, words, words. They do not know what the words mean: they are victims to words in their emotions instead of being the masters of them in their intelligence. (通过电影和收音机的发明,我们已经确定,对阅读的厌恶不会保护他们免受文字、文字、文字的不断冲击。他们不知道文字的含义:他们情感上是文字的受害者,而不是在智力上是文字的主人)”和第三段中的“In order to resist the distortions with which we are constantly bombed in the media, as well as be able to present a persuasive argument, we must be able to reason well, and think and give a judgement carefully.
