Three years ago, Nikki Robinson found a little raccoon (浣熊) by the road. She saved him and after a bunch of attempts at taking him to wildlife centers and vets, Nikki was disappointed at the lack of help. However, her mother Linda had experience in raising raccoons and after a little persuasion, took the little creature in.
They named him Little Hands and fell in love with the little raccoon. Linda and Nikki fed him, raised him, and eventually let him go. To their surprise, Little Hands kept coming back, sometimes after a few days, sometimes a few months. He would come back and ask for hugs, food, and just love.
Little Hands was taken care of by Linda. At first, he was set free onto her large property and was allowed to come and go as he pleased. He was very fearful of any human or animal that he didn’t grow up with, but would come back to visit them most nights. Linda would leave food out for him every night and sit outside on the porch swing before bed, waiting for his visit. The first thing he would do was that he would climb over to Linda on the swing, sit beside her, and want pats from her.
“Little Hands stayed with us for about two and a half months before he was fully released into the wild. He has always been a calm, peaceful raccoon, very loving and compassionate, even as he matured. But still wild enough he thrives on his own,” Nikki said. People asked Nikki what their reaction was when Little Hands returned to them. “Pure joy. And every time he came back it was a more and more joyous occasion especially because he wanted our attention as well as our food.”
At last, Nikki said: “Be kind. We share the planet with so many creatures that need to be respected. They are capable of complex social systems and emotions.”
24. What is Nikki’s main reason for raising the raccoon?

26. Which expression can best describe Nikki and her mother?
A. Careful and curious. B. Kind and generous.

A. Humans must share what they have with animals.
B. People should be in harmony with other creatures.
C. Many creatures are good at socializing with people.
D. Endangered animals need to be protected and respected.

At a large forest park in eastern Beijing, 11 birds on the state -level protection list were recently released, which owed to Beijing’s big step in wildlife protection.
These birds had recovered after the Beijing Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center rescued and took care of them. “We will speed up our efforts to push the establishment of district-level wildlife rescue centers to guard the health of wildlife,” said Mr. Du, director of the center. The center was set up in 2001 and built a wildlife rescue base in the capital’s Shunyi District in 2005. Staff at the base have rescued and rehabilitated over 30,000 wild animals in total.
Wildlife protection has been strengthened in Beijing in recent years. On June 1, the city’s newly adopted regulation (法规) on wildlife protection took effect, introducing stricter and more concrete measures to protect the environment and wildlife. For example, the regulation states clearly that Beijing bans hunting throughout the year, compared with the previous regulation which bans hunting during the periods of March to May and September to November each year. The new regulation also gives more serious punishment for illegal hunters.
After years of monitoring, the species and quantity of wild animals in Beijing are continuously increasing, with the number of terrestrial spinal wild animals (陆地脊椎野生动物) growing from 461 species in 1994 to more than 500. The habitat of the endangered bird has expanded from Fangshan District to the whole city.
“The enforcement of the new regulation marked a new stage in Beijing’s wildlife protection work,” said Mr. Du. “We will step up the publicity of the regulation and raise citizens’ awareness of wildlife protection,” Du said. “In our protection of mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes and grasslands. we take into full consideration the requirements of ecological corridor construction (生态走廊建设), food- chain construction and wildlife and their habitat protection.”
28. What has the wildlife rescue base done?
A. It has sped up its efforts to recover the birds.
B. It has built a large forest park in eastern Beijing.
C. It has saved lots of wild animals in need of help.
D. It has established district-level wildlife rescue centers.
29. What is the effect of the new regulation?
A. It bans hunting in Beijing all the year round.
B. It sets up nationwide wildlife rescue centers.
C. It raises people’s awareness of wildlife protection.
D. It monitors the wildlife protection for a long time.
30. Which of the following statements did Mr. Du agree with?
A. Beijing will enter a new stage after taking the regulation.
B. Beijing citizens need to know more of the new regulation.
C. Food-chain construction needs the whole society’s attention.
D. The natural environmental conditions are not considered yet.
31. What could be the best title of the passage?
A. Wildlife and Their Habitat Protection in Beijing.
B. Beijing’s Newly Adopted Regulation on Wildlife Protection.
C. Beijing’s Big Progress in Wildlife Protection with New Regulation.
D. The Establishment of Beijing Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center.

In a digital age, we almost never write things by hand. However, multiple studies have shown that this act has many benefits.
New brain research, led by researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, confirms the same: choosing handwriting over using a keyboard results in better learning and memory.
“When you write your shopping list or lecture notes by hand, you simply remember the content better afterwards,” said Audrey van der Meer, author of the study.
The study was conducted using equipment to track and record brain wave activity. The participants included 12 young adults and 12 children. This is the first time that children have participated in such a study. Each subject was asked to write by hand and type on a keyboard while wearing a hood (风帽) with over 250 electrodes (电极). The sensors (传感器) in the electrodes are very sensitive and pick up the electrical activity that takes place in the brain. Each examination took 45 minutes per person.
The results showed that the brain in both young adults and children is much more active when writing by hand than when typing on a keyboard. According to Van der Meer, plenty of senses are activated by pressing a pen on paper, seeing the letters written and hearing the sound made while writing. These sense experiences build contact between different parts of the brain, opening the brain up for learning.
Van der Meer believes that the outcomes stress the importance of children being challenged to draw and write at an early age, especially at school. “Learning to write by hand is a bit slower process, but it’s important for children to go through the tiring phase of learning to write by hand,” she said.
The hand movements used to form the shapes of letters can benefit a lot in many ways. “If you use a keyboard, you use the same movement each letter. Writing by hand requires control of your fine motor (精细动作) skills and senses. It’s important to put the brain in a learning state as often as possible,” Van der Meer added. For example, you might use a keyboard to write an essay, but you should take notes by hand during a lecture.
32. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A. To encourage the use of handwriting.
B. To suggest children starting to write early.
C. To report on a new research on handwriting.
D. To explain how handwriting influences adults and children differently.
33. Why does the brain become more active when writing by hand according to Van der Meer?
A. Writing by hand is easier on the brain.
B. More senses are made active when writing by hand.
C. The brain is more used to the skills required to write by hand.
D. Noise made by typing doesn’t distract the brain when writing by hand.
34. What do we know about the study?
A. The study involved 48 participants altogether.
B. All the participants were gathered together for examination.
C. The participants were divided into two groups to conduct the study.
D. The sensors in the electrodes were used to track brain wave activity.
35. How does Van der Meer think handwriting benefits people?
A. It helps people develop fine motor skills.
B. It allows people to write better essays.
C. It allows children to become more patient.
D. It increases people’s interest in learning.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow (乌鸦) landed on their window.
The father asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “It is a crow.” After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this?” The son said, “Father, I told you just now. It’s a crow.”
After a little while, the father asked his son the same question for the third time, “What is this?”
At this time, some expression of anger was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father. “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son for the fourth time, “What is this?”
This time his son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’? Are you not able to understand this?”
A minute later the father went to his room and came back with a diary, which he had kept since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page:
Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa when a crow suddenly landed on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I didn’t at all feel angry, but instead felt affection for my innocent son.
Paragraph 1:
After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father.

People celebrate it by eating mooncakes and admiring the full moon together with family and friends. It has a deep meaning of family reunion and expressing gratitude for the harvest. His father would patiently answer the same question all 23 times without feeling angry while his father asked him the same question just four times! The son thought to himself, “If I am in old age, how will my son look at me? Will he think of me as a burden? Will he shout at me because of my poor sight, poor hearing or poor understanding?”
Paragraph 2:
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father. He made an apology to his father, begging his father to forgive him for his bad behavior. He said aloud, “I promise to let you feel happy forever, Dad. It is you who have cared for me ever since I was a little child, showering me with your selfless affection. You worked hard to make money so that I could afford to go to university. I will pay you back in the best way.” And then he hugged his father lovingly.
