Zheng Qinwen announced herself as a major new force in women’s tennis with an import French Open debut (首秀) last month. Now the Chinese teenager hopes the fighting spirit she showed at the Grand Slam (大满贯) tournament can encourage kids starting out in the sport to chase their dreams on the court with the same determination.
“If tennis is your dream, I think you always have to fight for your dream. Because we only have one life, you shouldn’t have any regrets,” Zheng said last week in an interview.
The 19-year-old showed she possesses the talent to be a contender at the very top level of tennis with a breakout campaign at French Open.
Accounting for two-time Grand Slam winner Simona Halep along the way, Zhengs journey was ended in the fourth round by a three-set defeat to eventual champion Iga Swiatek. Zheng, though gave the Polish world No. 1 a big scare, battling back from 3-0 down in the first set to force, and win, a tiebreak (平分决胜局)。
“That was the first time I had played the world No.1, so I really wanted to grab this chance so I could judge her level and test myself,” said Zheng. “I didn’t want to give her the match so easy like that. It was pretty difficult for me to hold on in that match because of what my body was going through, but I wanted to show her I'm not easily beaten.
Looking back at Zheng Qinwen’s performances in this year’s French Open, there’s no doubt that she’s a true fighter. Zheng says she avoids being discouraged by higher-ranked opponents by simply focusing on the next point, one shot at a time. Supported by her team, she hopes she can one day win a Grand Slam title.
Zheng’s impressive French Open run has inevitably led to comparisons with China’s solitary Grand Slam singles champion Li Na, who won the 2011 French Open and 2014 Australian Open titles.
“When I was a kid, Li Na showed that Asian people also can do something really good in tennis. She was the first one. I will just focus on my own game and then let’s see if I can really compete at the highest level,” said Zheng.
24.What does the underlined word “contender” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Competitor. B.Announcer. C. Designer. D. Organizer.
25.What is the result of the match between Zheng and Iga Swiatek?
A.Iga Swiatek beat Zheng easily.
B.Zheng lost to Iga Swiatek at last.
C.Zheng won the match despite her pain.
D.Iga Swiatek lost because of her mistakes.
26.Why is Li Na mentioned in paragraph 7?
A.To explain why Li Na has achieved a lot.
B.To prove failure is the mother of success.
C.To show how excellent Zheng Qinwen is.
D.To compare the difference between Zheng Qinwen and LI Na.
27.Which of the following can best describe Zheng Qinwen?
A.Optimistic and generous.
B.Struggling and determined.
C.Independent and helpful.
D.Adventurous and realistic.

Airplane accidents are statistically rare. When they do happen, however, they are often fatal and people want answers as to why their loved ones lost their lives, and that is where black boxes come into play.
A black box, known as flight recorder, is an electronic recording device placed in an aircraft to help the investigation of air accidents. The term “black box” was a World War II British phrase, originating with the development of radio, radar, and electronic navigational aids in British and Allied combat aircraft. These often-secret electronic devices were literally covered in non-reflective black boxes or housings, hence the name “black box”.
There are two different flight recorder devices: the flight data recorder (FDR) as well as the cockpit voice recorder (CVR). Together, the FDR and CVR objectively document the aircraft’s flight history, which may assist in any later investigation. They are usually kept in the tail of an aircraft, where they are more likely to survive a crash. FDRs record things like airspeed, height and vertical acceleration (垂直加速度) and has about 25 hours of recording storage. The CVRs store the crew’s interactions with each other and air traffic control, as well as the background noise that can give vital clues to investigators in case of a crash. However, a CVR can store only two hours of cockpit voice recording.
Though the black box is useful, it’s looking increasingly likely that the little one will be replaced by streaming all essential data directly to a ground-based station. Air-to-ground systems can send flight data to a home base via satellite, which help to reduce time to search for a box, possibly avoiding a crisis. However, satellite and GPS capacity and data storage speeds are all areas that are being developed by scientists to support new innovations that are faster and lighter. The challenge is to build the systems to manage a large number of data that are needed to make it possible to track all commercial flight activity, especially the use of satellites and data storage.
28.What’s the function of a flight recorder?
A.To avoid airplane accidents.
B.To help investigate air crashes.
C.To save lives of the passengers.
D.To answer the questions of loved ones.
29.Why is a flight recorder called a black box?
A.For its container. B.For its design. C.For its function. D.For its position.
30.What can be learned about the flight recorder devices?
A.FDR is more effective than CVR.
B.The data can be preserved for two days.
C.The background noise can be recorded by FDR.
D.They are fixed at the back of the aircraft to keep safe.
31.Which of the following may the author agree?
A.Scientists need to improve the speed to store data.
B.Commercial flight data can not be tracked and stored.
C.The black box will be replaced by other facilities soon.
D.It will take more time for air-to-ground systems to find the black box.

Scientists think they have answered a mystery: How some ocean creatures got so huge so quickly.
A few million years ago, the largest whales, averaged about 15 feet long. Then seemingly overnight, one type of whale—the toothless baleen whale (须鲸类)—became huge. Modern blue whales get as big as 100 feet, the largest creatures ever on Earth. “We really are living in the time of giants,” said Nicholas Pyenson of the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. “Why is that?” “It happened in the glance of an evolutionary eye, which makes it harder to figure out what happened,” said Graham Slater, lead author of the study. Their study has suggested an answer: Ice ages in the last 3 to 5 million years started it, changing the oceans and food supply for whales.
The researchers used fossil records of the smaller whales to create a family tree for baleen whales—which include blue whales, humpbacks and right whales. Using computer simulations (模拟) and knowledge about how evolution works, they concluded that when the size changes started, the South and North poles got colder and the water circulation in the oceans changed and winds shifted. Slater and Pyenson said cold water went deep and moved closer to the equator (赤道) and then eventually moved back up with small fish and other small animals that whales eat. That’s why you can see lots of whales in the summer in California’s Monterey Bay, Slater said.
Baleen whales, which have no teeth, feed by eating huge amounts of ocean, filtering (过滤) out the water and eating the creatures they capture. Toothed whales, like sperm whales (抹香鲸), hunt individual fish, so the ocean changes that made food less evenly (平均地) spread out didn’t affect them as much. “If you are a whale, the easiest way to take advantage of resources is to get big,” Slater said. But baleen whales hunt schools of fish. Olivier Lambert at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, who wasn’t part of the study, calls it “a really convincing situation”. But he said the lack of fossils in certain time periods is an issue. As oceans warm from man-made climate change, the sea will be more like it was when the whales were smaller and they will have a more difficult time surviving, Slater and others said.
32. What does the author mean by “It happened in the glance of an evolutionary eye” in the second paragraph?
A. Researchers thought the change of baleen whales was unimportant.
B. Researchers paid little attention to the change of baleen whales .
C. The change of baleen whales was too difficult to explore .
D. The change of baleen whales happened too quickly.
33. What played the key role in baleen whales’ becoming huge?
A. The water circulation in the oceans.
B. Its eating a small amount of fish.
C. The increase of food supply for whales.
D. Man-made climate change.
34. What do you know about sperm whales and blue whales according to the text?
A. Sperm whales eat more food.
B. Blue whaler live much longer.
C. Sperm whales prefer to hunt schools of fish.
D. Blue whales usually swallow schools of fish.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Olivier Lambert thinks the study is perfect.
B. Global warming has threatened the whales.
C. The whales may become even bigger.
D. There are no whale fossils now.

People think being a delivery person is easy, but it’s more complex than anyone can imagine. Although Harry always did his best, he was not able to afford a car. He used his motorbike to deliver orders and usually it was convenient except for severe weather conditions.
One day, he was trying to get off the highway when he saw an old beggar trying to cross the road. He was weak and looked cold in his dirty jacket. The honks (鸣笛) of cars echoed as they passed him, and the man backed away with fear. If that kept going, someone would run over the man, so Harry stopped to help him cross.
Harry grabbed the man’s arm to guide him and started leading him through it. Luckily, they reached the other side after a few minutes, and the old beggar smiled brightly at him. “Thank you so much, young man. I can’t believe I finally crossed. Can you tell me your address? I want to send a thank-you gift.” the older man said, reaching for Harry.
“Oh, that’s not necessary.” Harry said and straightened his motorbike to get back on it. “Please. I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t repay this kind gesture,” he insisted, and Harry nodded, telling him his address. Still, he didn’t expect anything from this poor older man. “Thank you again!” the senior beggar waved as Harry rolled away to continue working.
Harry lived in a nice neighborhood but because the pandemic cost him his job, and now food delivery was his entire livelihood. Some days he had to work 18 hours to make ends meet. He was his children’s only parent because his wife had abandoned them long ago, and Harry was determined to build a promising future for them, even if he didn’t have a car to make those deliveries properly. He was saving for that.
注意:
However, he found a brand new car in his garage the following day.

However, he found a brand new car in his garage the following day. “What’s going on?” he wondered wide-eyed, throwing his motorbike on the grass. Then he noticed the old beggar he had helped cross the road standing by the garage. “Sir! What are you doing here? Is that your car? How? What? Why?” Harry stumbled through questions as he approached the old man. The old man explained that his wife had left him with their only son when his company went bankrupt. And this car bought years ago had been for his grandson as a birthday gift, who, however, had died of a severe disease. “I could tell from your work uniform that you deliver food, and thought that you could really use the vehicle. Please, accept it!”, the old man insisted.
Paragraph 2:
The sincerity in the old man’s face couldn’t be denied. Harry swallowed thickly at the moisture gathering in the old man’s eyes and finally nodded. “Thank you,” he said gratefully and hugged the old beggar. “How about some dinner?”, Harry offered, brightening the mood. They had dinner and a wonderful time. The next day, Harry delivered everything in the new car and got home early to spend more time with his kids and actually enjoyed himself. He invited the old man to come every Friday for a special dinner, and he became like a member of their family — a family who valued each other after anything money could buy. So be nice to others, and you’ll get repaid in unusual ways.

5.【原文】M: Can I help you, little lady?
W: I’m lost officer. Last time I saw my mother was in the dress section, but now I’m in the toy section.
M: Come with me. We can call her from the information desk.
6.【原文】M: Do you know where the gym is?
W: It’s not too far away, next to the library. Are you a student here?
M: Yes, but I actually just started to study here a few weeks ago.
W: Oh wow, welcome to our school. Did they give you a map when you arrived?
M: Yes, but I lost it. Maybe I’ll get a new one in the school shop.
W: I wish I could show you the way to the gym, but I have class in a few minutes.
M: No worries. Thanks anyway. I’ll ask another student.
W: OK. I hope to see you around!
7.【原文】W: I just got back from my trip around Vietnam. Where did you go for your holiday?
M: I was In Japan for ten days. How long did you stay In Vietnam?
W: We were in Vietnam for a week and spent another week on a boat.
M: That sounds amazing, but being on boats always makes me feel quite sick.
W: It worked out so well for us. What did you do in Japan?
M: We spent our trip skiing and driving through the cities and mountains.
W: Oh, I’ve always wanted to try skiing!
M: My wife loves skiing, but I prefer spending time in the city. I think we will go to the beach for our next holiday, though.
8【原文】M: Mary, just look at this view. Isn’t it great? It’s so different from New York City and Toronto!
W: It’s beautiful, John. I can’t believe I’m standing in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. I feel like I’m in a movie right now.
M: Studying abroad has been a great decision. My art studies are improving a lot. I’m a much better painter now.
W: Yes, there are so many benefits of studying abroad. I’m learning a lot about history and literature.
M: Hey, are you still hungry? I think that shop has some food.
W: Yes. Let’s get some bread.
M: That sounds good. I’ve got some wine and cheese in my bag.
W: Great. We can have a picnic here on the grass.
9.【原文】M: Are you going for the job interview tomorrow?
W: Yes. I need to get to their office on Lincoln Street at 10:00 a.m. Can you drive me there tomorrow?
M: Yes, of course. It’d take too long to get there by bus or subway. Are you prepared for the interview?
W: I think so. But I'm kind of nervous. I don’t have much work experience.
M: Relax. You’re a great engineer, and I’m sure you’re the right person they are looking for.
W: Maybe. I don’t think I’m good enough at French.
M: What are you talking about? Your French is really good. I was impressed by the way you talked to those people we met on holiday last year.
W: Yeah, but that was just simple daily conversations.
M: Well, I think you’ve very talented at learning languages. I’m sure you’ll become good at it in no time.
W: Thank you for encouraging me. I’m still worried, though.
M: We’ll just have to wait and see, won't we?
10【原文】 Have you ever wanted to read a book but you can’t get it? Have you wanted to share any excellent books with others around the world? A website called Book Crossing can help you with that. This is a website on which people can share books. It’s free for readers around the world to read online and download the books. It acts just like an online library. Users can put their books on the website for others to read, or they read books which are offered by others.
Sometimes physical books are put at some public places like coffee shops, restaurants and bus stations. Members can view a list on the website to get information. If a member wants to read a book from the list, they can go to the place where it was left to get it. On the website, the yellow number can show how many books have been put at a particular place over the last 30 days. If the number is red, it shows how many books have been put in the last 3 days.
