Liang Kaiyu, a 30-year-old engineer, lost his left leg above the knee in an explosion when testing his self-built automatic electronic motor in January 2020. He used his engineering skills to make his prosthetic (假肢的) leg more comfortable and powerful than a real leg.
“I have experienced some awkward moments while using the prosthetic leg, which has made me think about how to upgrade it.” Liang says, “Security checks when traveling, especially at airports, can be a bit problematic: others include trying on clothes in fitting rooms, shoes at shopping malls, and changing from ‘feet’ to a running blade before jogging.” Since late 2020, he has upgraded his high-tech prosthesis. One of the latest upgrades is the addition of colored LED lights to his running blade.
He has become an overnight internet hit on short-video streaming platforms for sharing his designs and upgrades on his high-tech prosthetic leg to make it close to, or even better than, a real one. Liang says, “Although China has millions of amputees (截肢患者), people with a prosthesis are still a rare sight on the street. I hope my videos can be inspiring to people struggling through tough times, just like I have been through. Even a smile will make it worth it.”
Since his optimism and courage made national headlines, Liang has gone viral on social media. On micro-blogging platform Sina Weibo, his story has gained more than 21 million views so far. Many users refer to him by the nickname “Iron Leg Man”. “What amazes me most is not your skills, but your confidence after such a disaster,” a netizen named Modaren says.
To advance functional performance and help amputees maintain or regain their freedom of movement, Liang has provided his experience and suggestions to several prosthetics companies. “If there is a good opportunity, I want to make high-tech prosthetics accessible and affordable to more amputees in China,” Liang says.
    4. What caused Liang to upgrade his prosthetic leg?
    A. His plan to run faster. B. The quality of his prosthetic leg.
    C. His enthusiasm for innovation. D. The inconveniences from his prosthetic leg.
    5. Why does Liang share his videos?
    A. To earn his living. B. To attract more followers.
    C. To encourage the people in trouble. D. To show off his professional skills.
    6. Which of the following can best describe Liang?
    A. Optimistic and confident. B. Honest and courageous.
    C. Determined and modest. D. Considerate and humorous.
    7. What can we learn from the story?
    A. Two heads are better than one.
    B. It’s never too late to do what you like.
    C. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
    D. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
D 5. C 6. A 7. C

根据第三段“Liang says, “Although China has millions of amputees(截肢患者), people with a prosthesis are still a rare sight on the street. I hope my videos can be inspiring to people struggling through tough times, just like I have been through. Even a smile will make it worth it.”(梁说:“虽然中国有数百万截肢者,但街上戴着假肢的人仍然很少见。

Some of the world’s best Coffea arabica is grown on Mount Kenya. This variety of the plant produces beans that are tastier than those from its poor cousin, Coffea canephora (known as robusta), which often ends up in instant coffee However, global warming may reduce the total area that is most suited to growing arabica beans by about half by 2050.
Some farmers are trying to adapt to warming by moving uphill. Yet this pushes them into areas long used for growing tea. Not only is there less space higher up; the move stresses how warming also threatens to harm the tea crop, which supports about 10% of Kenya’s population. Warmer weather will push tea itself higher up area.
Kenya’s government-funded Coffee Research Institute is trying to find other ways of helping farmers adapt, such as encouraging them to plant trees to shade their coffee bushes, or to grow hardier (适应性更强) robusta plants. It is also trying to plant a hybrid, Arabusta, which would combine the hardiness of robusta with the flavour of arabica. Coffee snobs may turn up their noses at it, but they may have no other choices.
However, such adaptations may bring social costs. Many smallholder farmers are at risk of being pushed out of the industry altogether because they cannot afford the money needed to protect their crops.
Another option may be entirely new varieties. Researchers in London are studying a wild type of coffee, Coffea stenophylla. It is delicious and can also take the heat. But it produces lower harvest than existing varieties and it may be years before it is widely grown. Without a breakthrough of some sort, caffeine addicts may face a future too unpleasant to imagine. “If we don’t have the innovation (创新) to respond to climate challenges,” Vern Long of World Coffee Research says, “we’re just going to be drinking man-made coffee.”
    8. In what way is Coffea arabica better than Coffea robusta?
    A. Flavor. B. Harvest. C. Hardiness. D. Sales.
    9. What does the underlined “it” refer to in Paragraph 3?
    A. Robusta. B. Arabica. C. Arabusta. D. Stenophylla.
    10. What might be the impact of the government’s policy?
    A. Good money will be brought in.
    B. The areas of tea crop will be reduced.
    C. The cost of coffee-planting may drop.
    D. Smallholder coffee farmers may disappear.
    11. What’s the purpose of this text?
    A. To give suggestions to coffee farmers.
    B. To recommend new varieties of coffee.
    C. To introduce coffee industry under threat.
    D. To list possible solutions to climate changes.
A 9. C 10. D 11. C
根据第一段“Some of the world’s best Coffea arabica is grown on Mount Kenya. This variety of the plant produces beans that are tastier than those from its poor cousin, Coffea canephora (known as robusta), which often ends up in instant coffee.(肯尼亚山上种植着世界上最好的Coffea arabica。 故选A项。
根据第三段“It is also trying to plant a hybrid, Arabusta, which would combine the hardiness of robusta with the flavour of arabica. Coffee snobs may turn up their noses at it, but they may have no other choices.(它还试图种植一种杂交品种Arabusta,这种品种将robusta的耐寒性与arabica的风味相结合。
根据第四段“Many smallholder farmers are at risk of being pushed out of the industry altogether because they cannot afford the money needed to protect their crops.(许多小农面临被完全赶出该行业的风险,因为他们负担不起保护作物所需的资金)”可知,政府的政策可能会导致咖啡小农负担不起所需的资金,从该行业消失。
根据第一段“However, global warming may reduce the total area that is most suited to growing arabica beans by about half by 2050.(然而,到2050年,全球变暖可能使最适合种植arabica的总面积减少约一半)”、第四段“Many smallholder farmers are at risk of being pushed out of the industry altogether because they cannot afford the money needed to protect their crops.(许多小农面临被完全赶出该行业的风险,因为他们负担不起保护作物所需的资金)”以及最后一段“But it produces lower harvest than existing varieties and it may be years before it is widely grown.(但它的收成比现有品种低,而且可能要过几年才能广泛种植)”可知,本文写作的目的是介绍面临威胁的咖啡产业。故选C项。

Hilversum is a medium-sized city between the major cities of Amsterdam and Utrecht in the Gooi area of North Holland, the Netherlands. Unlike most of the Netherlands, Hilversum is actually in a hilly area with the soil mostly consisting of sand. Once called the Garden of Amsterdam, it still attracts travelers to come over to cycle and walk through the surrounding forests. They visit it for a relaxing day off from the urban madness. For Dutch people, Hilversum is all about textile (纺织) and media industries, and modern architecture.
In history, Hilversum was largely an agricultural area. Daily life was marked by farming, sheep raising and wool production. A railway link to Amsterdam in 1874 attracted rich traders from Amsterdam to Hilversum. They build themselves large villas (别墅) in the wooded surroundings of the town. One of the families moving in was the Brenninkmeijers, currently the wealthiest family of the Netherlands. They moved in after big success in the textile industry and aided a substantial textile industry in Hilversum. But the textile boom lasted only several decades. The last factory closed in the 1960s.
The change to a media economy started in 1920, when the Nederlandse Seintoestedllen Fabriek (NSF) established a radio factory in Hiversum. Most radio stations called in the large villas in the leafy areas of the town. Television gave another push to the local economy. Hilversum became the media capital of the Netherlands, and Dutch television stars moved into the leafy neighborhoods surrounding the town.
In the early 1900s, modern architcts W.M. Dudok and J. Duiker placed hundreds of remarkable buildings in Hilversum. These modern architectural masterpieces (杰作) are so many that Hilversum almost feels like an open air museum. Dudok alone shaped most 20th century Hilversum and approximately 75 buildings still bear his unique characters. His masterpiece, Hilversum Town Hall, was built in 1928-1931. It has wide international fame and is included in many architecture textbooks. The building has a remarkable shape and looks like a combination of “blocks”. Actually, one may start his journey of modern architecture by walking or biking the W.M. Dudok Architectural Route in Hilversum.
    12. Hilversum is different from most of the Netherlands in that ______.
    A. it has a large population
    B. it is cut off from big cities
    C. it has many beautiful gardens
    D. it is in a hilly area with sandy soil
    13. What was the greatest contribution of the Brenninkmeijers to Hilversum?
    A. Building a railway link to Amsterdam
    B. Helping its textile industry to develop
    C. Constructing large villas for the poor
    D. Assisting its agricultural industry
    14. The beginning of the media industry in Hilversum was marked by the establishment of ______.
    A. a radio factory
    B. the medial capital
    C. a radio station
    D. a TV station
    15. What is known about W.M. Dudok’s Hilversum Town Hall?
    A. It consists of approximately 75 buildings
    B. It looks like an open air museum in the city
    C. It is a classic example in architecture textbooks
    D. It has shaped most of 20th century Hilvesum.
D 13. B 14. A 15. C
根据首段第二句“Unlike most of the Netherlands, Hilversum is actually a hilly area”可知Hilversum不同于荷兰其他地方之处在于它属于沙土丘陵地带。
They moved in after big success in the textile industry and aided a substantial textile industry in Hilversum.
The change to a media economy started in 1920, when the Nederlandse Seintoestedllen Fabriek (NSF) established a radio factory in Hiversum. 故选A项。
It has wide international fame and is included in many architecture textbooks可知,它具有广泛的国际声誉,并被列入许多建筑教科书。

World in a dish: The garden path
Imagine a plate holding two strawberries, identical in appearance. One came from the supermarket, meaning it was probably harvested when it was still unripe, loaded onto a refrigerated truck and driven hundreds of miles. ___16___ The other strawberry was picked from a garden minutes before being eaten.
The first one will probably taste like a slightly soft cucumber, with light berry flavors and strong sour tastes. The second is likely to be sweet and floral; the flavor will stay in the mouth, as the pleasant smell will on the hands. ___17___ They are convenient and available in the northern hemisphere (北半球) in February.
___18___ This attitude misunderstands the ultimate appeal of gardening. It mistakes the product for the purpose. It is true that a garden can produce peas that offer a taste of spring while finding tomatoes in the shops can take some time, effort and expense.
A garden, especially in the early years, can also produce little but frustration. Beginning gardeners may plant the wrong crops for their soil. Squirrels have an annoying habit of taking single bites of cucumbers, beans and tomatoes, then leaving the rest on the vine (藤) to rot. ___19___
No matter. ___20___ The deepest pleasure — as with cooking, writing, bringing up children or almost anything worthwhile — is in the work itself. To garden is to patiently, lovingly and diligently help life flourish, in the ground and above it.
    A. The real joy of gardening is the time spent doing it.
    B. Growing your own vegetables ensures a reliable supply.
    C. Well-stocked supermarket shelves are available all week.
    D. Some columnists long considered gardening a waste of time.
    E. However, supermarket strawberries are not entirely without advantages.
    F. By the time it reached the plate it may have been off the vine for two weeks.
    G. And even expert gardeners can lose a season's harvest to uncooperative weather.
F 17. E 18. D 19. G 20. A
根据空后的“The other strawberry was picked from a garden minutes before being eaten.(另一个草莓是在吃之前几分钟从花园里摘的。)” F“By the time it reached the plate it may have been off the vine for two weeks.(当它到达盘子时,它可能已经从藤上脱落两周了。)”
根据空后的“They are convenient and available in the northern hemisphere(北半球) in February.(它们在北半球的2月份是方便和可用的。)” E“However, supermarket strawberries are not entirely without advantages.(然而,超市里的草莓也不是完全没有优势。)”
根据空后的“This attitude misunderstands the ultimate appeal of gardening. It mistakes the product for the purpose.(这种态度误解了园艺的终极吸引力。 D“Some columnists long considered gardening a waste of time.(一些专栏作家长期以来认为园艺是浪费时间。)”
根据空前的“A garden, especially in the early years, can also produce little but frustration. Beginning gardeners may plant the wrong crops for their soil. Squirrels have an annoying habit of taking single bites of cucumbers, beans and tomatoes, then leaving the rest on the vine(藤) to rot.(一个花园,尤其是在早期的几年里,除了挫折,也能产生很少的东西。 G“And even expert gardeners can lose a season's harvest to uncooperative weather.(即使是园艺专家也可能因为不配合的天气而失去一个季节的收成。)”
根据空后的“The deepest pleasure—as with cooking, writing, bringing up children or almost anything worthwhile—is in the work itself.(最深层次的乐趣——就像烹饪、写作、抚养孩子或几乎任何有价值的事情一样——在于工作本身。)” A“The real joy of gardening is the time spent doing it.(园艺的真正乐趣在于花时间做它。)” 故选A。

故填to attract。

The bad weather made it impossible for us to finish the task on time .
表达为make;“不可能”表达为impossible;“完成任务”表达为finish the task;“按时”表达为on time。 The bad weather made it impossible for us to finish the task on time。
Don’t pretend to know what you don’t know.
“不要做某事”表达为don’t do sth.;“假装做某事”表达为pretend to do sth.;“懂你不懂的”可在know后跟上what引导的宾语从句,表达为know what you don’t know。 Don’t pretend to know what you don’t know。
It rained heavily, causing terrible flooding in the area.
It rained heavily, causing terrible flooding in the area.
Either you or one of your students is to attend the meeting.
要么...”,所以译为“either you or one of your students”,谓语用be动词,either...or...遵循就近原则,离be动词最近的名词是one of your students,所以用单数is,“参加会议”做表语译为“to attend the meeting.”。 Either you or one of your students is to attend the meeting.
He has addicted himself to literature since young age.
