Which is the perfect place for a holiday? Europe. Every corner of the continent is bursting
with history, culture and sights. The countries are so very close to one another, and yet so
absolutely different.
Sweden
Sweden is a brilliant destination for a campervan (露营车 ) holiday, with hundreds of
well-appointed camping sites suitable for vehicles. Head north to Lapland in the Arctic Circle and
you’ll find true wildernesses where you can truly get close to nature. Head here between June and
mid-July and you’ll be able to take in the midnight sunshine. If you’re looking for great nightlife,
head to Gothenburg, Stockholm or Malmo.
Germany
There are a wide range of industrial cities, rolling plains, towering mountains, deep forests
and long, sparkling rivers. It’s not just what’s to see that makes Germany so great, but the ease of
seeing everything. All these wonderful locations are all linked by one of the world’s best road
systems.
Scotland
Scotland has something for everyone: cities with rich nightlife, amazing scenery, wonderful
lochs and medieval (中世纪的) castles. If you want to get away from it all, then the Highlands are
one of the least populated areas in the whole of Europe. Hikers will love the Cairngorms – the
largest national park in the UK.

At just 17, McGarry is a rising star of the food world and has been dubbed(给……取别名) the
“Justin Bieber” of American cooking.
Flynn McGarry’s cooking career started when he was 11, partly thanks to his mother. “My
mom didn’t really like cooking, and when she did cook, I didn’t really like her food. I was
watching something on the Food Network channel and I thought that I could do this, so I went to
the bookstore and looked for the biggest cookbook I could find.”
Within a year, he had produced most of its recipes(菜谱 ) and was ready for a bigger
challenge. He said, “I wanted to create my own dishes and I started to cook for more people than
just my family too.” His parents allowed him to build a test kitchen in his bedroom. “At first, they
were fine with it, but then they asked if I wanted to sleep next to a stove(火炉) and I said yes. It
started off as two tables with some gas burners, my desk and my bed, but then I needed more
space for cooking,so I gave up the desk and got a foldaway bed(折叠床 ).” Then Flynn’s older
sister, whose bedroom had more space, went off to college. He moved down to her room and fitted
it with a large stove, four work stations, and a long area for preparing the end results on plates.

Britain is the sixth fattest country within the Organization for Economic Co-operation and
Development (OECD). For more than a decade, the government has declared obesity (肥胖) a
national emergency and promised to take action, only to produce disappointing plans that don’t
reach what is required.
It should not have taken a disease like COVID-19 to make people fully aware of the awful
consequences of the UK’s obesity. Obesity, as well as its associated conditions of diabetes (糖尿
病) and high blood pressure, is strongly connected with a higher risk of death from COVID-19
and will have undoubtedly been a factor in the UK having the highest COVID-19 death rate in
Europe.

As the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson’s experience of catching the virus and being admitted
to ICU has reportedly resulted in a complete change in him, who has previously prided himself on
his dislike of an over-controlling state. The government is expected to set out a new strategy this
week, aimed at reducing obesity levels both in the next few months — ahead of a possible second
wave of infections — and the longer term.
This obvious change is welcome, but only if it results in a complete change in the
government’s approach, which doesn’t rely on personal responsibility but on much tougher rules,
as with tobacco and alcohol.
There is plenty of evidence about what is needed to cut obesity and in recent years, many
reports, including from Public Health England and the former chief medical officer, have called
for urgent action. Yet these calls were ignored by the government that has seemingly put the food
and drink industry’s financial interests over the health of the nation.
28.What has the government done with obesity in the past ten years?
A.It has denied(否认) it is a national emergency.B.It has called for immediate action on it.
C.It has taken effective steps to control it.
29.What might the British government do next?
A.Place less stress on financial interests.
C.Set stricter limits on tobacco and alcohol.
D.It has made unsatisfying plans to reduce it.
B.Carry out a new strategy to cut obesity.
D.Take action to reduce COVID-19 death rate.
30.From the passage, we can learn that __________.
A. The British government has taken effective action to battle against obesity
B. The fast-spread disease COVID-19 resulted in the UK’s obesity
C. The Prime Minister caught the virus and was admitted to ICU for obesity
D. The British government should have paid more attention to solving obesity
31.What’s the best title for the text?
A.UK Suffering from COVID-19
B.UK Ready for a Complete Change
C.Obesity: An Urgent Problem in the UK
D.Obesity: A Cause of Highest COVID-19 Death Rate
D

need to be upgraded more often than every 10 years. In 2002 a computer and basic mobile phone
would have been enough for most people, but now? The public need a trendy notebook computer
and a smart phone with WiFi connection to feel they are up-to-date. So when will we have enough
things? When will we finally be happy? Well, it looks like the things we buy today will barely
keep us satisfied for a few months.
In the eyes of some psychologists, far from making us happy, greater consumer choice
creates many serious psychological problems. A fundamental principle of the society is that more
freedom is better and more choice in the marketplace means more freedom. Therefore more choice
leads to more happiness. This is not the case, however.
Imagine you go to a café offering chocolate and vanilla ice cream. You choose the chocolate
and eat it happily. But what if the café serves 50 kinds of ice cream? You choose chocolate and
then start to worry, “maybe blueberry would have been better, perhaps the half-fat ice cream
would have been healthier. Stupid me, all these choices and I didn’t make the best one! ”
In China’s major cities we have now passed the point where more consumer choice is making
us happier. We are annoyed by all the options we have, disappointed because our expectations are
so high and angered at ourselves when we don’t make a perfect choice every time.
A newspaper reporter tells a story about traveling on a plane with high-speed Internet access.
He thought this was amazing — the newest piece of technology he had heard of. Then the service
went down. The man next to him was angry and swore. The reporter thought, “How quickly the
world owes him something he knew existed only 10 seconds ago!”
32.What may some psychologists think of the consumer demand in the café?
A.The consumer has mental problems.
C.Variety leads to unhappiness.
B.More choice means more freedom.
D.The shop provides too many choices.
33.Why was the man next to the reporter quite annoyed?
A.The net connection was interrupted.
C.The air hostess offered poor service.
B.Someone owed him money.
D.The pleasure lasted only 10 seconds.
34.What does the underlined word “swore” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Fell asleep. B. Said rude words. C. Made promises. D. Became amazed.
35.What is the text mainly talking about?
A. Hi-tech and consumer needs.
B. Computers and smart phones.

Have you ever had to overcome an extreme challenge in your life?
My teenage years had been crazy. From schoolwork to athletics, I had always been running
around. Everything was so difficult.
Throughout my teenage years, I have been faced with many extreme challenges that have
required extreme focus and hard work to overcome. If it hadn’t been for hard work, none of these
challenges that I faced would have been conquered.
Two years ago, when I was a freshman in high school, I dealt with an extremely significant
injury. This took place in my tennis tournament in January. In the climax of my match, I turned my
back to the left and soon after felt a sharp, painful shock run through my spine(脊柱). I knew at
that difficult moment I seriously injured my back. I was rushed off the court and my parents made
an appointment with an orthopedist (矫形外科医生) for the next morning.
I walked into the office, extremely nervous and suffering from great pain. My tennis season for
school started in three months and I absolutely needed to build up the strength.
After about twenty minutes of waiting in the office, which felt like an century, the doctor
walked in to examine my X-rays. With a sorrowful face, the doctor looked into mine and my
mother's eyes and said, There is a 50/50 chance that Lucas will be able to participate in this year’s
tennis season. Lucas broke his L5 vertebrae in his lower back." My heart dropped and I felt a
sadness come over me. The doctor said that I would be sitting out of physical activity for two and
a half to three months.
Those three months were the longest three months of my life. I was so eager to get back to
