Over the years I have been interested to read about studies into the power of touch. A study found that holding hands to comfort a loved one can actually reduce their pain. Through a process that’s not fully understood, if one of them is in pain, the pain appears to reduce.
I’ve seen this so many times when the husband or wife of a patient in discomfort reaches out and holds their hand, and as if by magic, in a few minutes they become less painful. Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised, as we have known for many years about the importance of touch. It symbolizes safety and love.
The value of touch was proved by a series of experiments on monkeys back in the 1950s by Harry Harlow, an American scientist. His work showed the unbelievable drive for warmth and intimacy (亲密) that we all have. In his experiments, he gave young monkeys a choice between a “mother” made of wire mesh (铁丝网) that had a ready supply of milk and the other a warm, soft mother that did not provide any food. They chose, to everyone’s surprise, the comfort over food. This was unexpected because it had always been thought that food was the main motivator (动力) for living creatures. Yet this appeared to show that it was not food, but being comforted and intimate, that was the most important thing. He described these experiments as a study of love and they showed for the first time how important the feeling of being loved is to us. And his idea has been supported by countless further scientific studies.
Personally I find this so comforting. For me, this really speaks of the power of love.

Some people might think that young people are too young to know what they want. But people like Lu Kaigang prove them all wrong.
Lu, 23, a fashion model from China, grew up walking the roads in the countryside in Guangxi. Now, he walks on some of the largest fashion catwalks in the world.
________. “I have had a supermodel dream since I was 10 while I was still in primary school. I saw a fashion show on TV and I felt it was so cool to do that on the runway,” Lu said.
Although Lu didn’t have much money or any professional training, that didn’t stop him from chasing his dream. Lu collected pieces of cloth from the factory he worked at and made them into outfits(服装). In 2018, he started making videos of himself wearing his handmade outfits and posted them online.
Lu has what money can’t buy: determination and self-belief. “The early videos I posted didn’t get many ‘likes’,” Lu said. “But I believed what I was doing would be recognized by the world someday.”
Lu quit his job at the factory and went back to his hometown to spend time learning how to be a supermodel. He also began to use other materials for outfits, like plastic bags and even buckets and kept posting videos of himself online.
About one year later, Lu’s hard work paid off and he became an online star. He’s not just an ordinary model. His one-of-a-kind clothes show off his talent and creativity, and his videos are mostly filmed on village dirt roads, adding a different and fresh background.
We can be sure that if Lu hadn’t followed his heart at a young age, he wouldn’t be where he is today.

Losing your phone is a pity, but I did just that when I got into a taxi and closed the door heavily. I heard a loud noise. It was the sound of my phone’s screen breaking. Besides the sound of breaking glass, the other sound I heard was my own voice saying, “Oh, no! What have I done?”
So, for the next day, I had to live without a phone: no calls, no texts, no social media. And what I discovered was that I really didn’t miss making phone calls or getting text messages or reading social media posts. It was actually relaxing. For that whole day, I was able to stop living in a “virtual” world and start living in the “real” world.
Smartphones have changed the way we live. They are sources of communication, information and entertainment. All of these things are good, but too much of these things can also be bad. There is a chemical in your brain called dopamine (多巴胺). Activities like watching videos cause your brain to get this chemical. It gives you pleasure. For many people, these feelings of “pleasure” will increase the more they use their smartphones. This explains why you may feel upset when you can’t use yours. You have, in fact, become addicted (上瘾) to dopamine, the “happy hormone”. To treat this increasingly common addiction, some places are experimenting with the idea of “no digital hours”. In the Indian village of Vadgaon, for example, people are being forced to turn off their phones and TVs from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. every night.
Smartphones are great, but you should be smart about using them. Put them away in your pocket for a while and enjoy the real world... but you should still be careful about getting into taxis.
27.The writer leads in the topic mainly by ________.
A.listing reasons B.comparing facts C.giving an example D.asking a question
28.According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A.The writer lost his phone in the taxi and got very angry.
B.The writer’s work was influenced badly without his phone.
C.The dopamine makes us upset when we can’t use phones.
D.The dopamine caused by using phones makes us happy.
29.Paragraph 3 mainly tells us ________.
A.what dopamine is B.why we are addicted to phones
C.when Indians can watch TV D.how smartphones change our life
30.The writer may agree that ________.
A.we should use our smartphones wisely
B.we can’t live without smartphones nowadays

To celebrate the 70th birthday of our school, we had an interesting activity: designing our own school uniforms.
We were all excited about it. My classmate Pei Youyang designed three types of sports clothes to wear in different seasons. “These clothes are all loose and comfortable to play sports. To keep students safe at night, she also added three reflective stripes (反光条) on the trousers. Wang Chuhan made a series of dresses only for girls. “Most of the school uniforms look mostly the same, and the girls’ beauty is often not shown by the clothes,” said Wang. “So I designed some beautiful dresses to let girls show their youth and beauty confidently.”
As for me, I designed uniforms in a traditional Chinese style, such as the pattern of Xiangyun and ink paintings. The main colors are blue and jade green. I believe they’ll look good when students attend some formal meetings or ceremonies.
“I’m surprised that the students all did such a good job,” said Ms Sun Congmin from the school. “Their designs are pretty and useful. This is really a meaningful activity to show their talent and creativity.”
Designing Our Own 1 Three students share their own ideas: ●Pei Youyang: Three types of loose and comfortable sports clothes with 2 to keep students safe at night. ●Wang Chuhan: Beautiful dresses only for girls to show their 3 . ●I: Uniforms in a 4 with the colours of blue and jade green. |
