Imagine getting the chance to go camping for five days. It would be an adventure in the wild. You could go boating on a lake every day and leave your smartphone at home. Would you want to try this?
In June, four teenage girls from Minnesota, the US, went camping in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. They had a great time—even without their smartphones. Ji Ruelle, 16 years old, put the group together. Earlier this year, she won an writing competition provided by a company. The prize was a five-day camping adventure with up to three friends. No parents or guides would be there. This adventure was supposed to encourage kids to be less dependent on technology.
Ruelle had been to the area before, but she had always gone with her parents. Sharing the experience with friends would be very different. She invited three friends: Anna Wander, Madeline Wilson and Julianna Torelli.
They came up with a daily plan. “We would wake up early every day. We would do watersports by noon. We ate lunch at the camp. Then it was time for hammocks(吊床), reading, writing, making friendship rings, talking and resting,” Ruelle said.
“I’m a lot less worried about things,” Wander said when asked how she felt without her smartphone. Her favourite thing was to lie in her hammock, looking at the lake. Torelli enjoyed cooking. She made blueberry pancakes and sandwiches.
“No one felt hungry or homesick. Mental health can be improved so much. It really helps to get away and reconnect with yourself,” Ruelle said.

Last term I took a beginner’s course in video art. The course taught me about the development of modern arts, and how media works.
At first, Lauren Woods, the course professor, encouraged us to make videos. I made a video about food. I believe food is a good way to learn more about cultural differences and social traditions, and trying food is a way for me to understand the world and make friends. I believe a video about food can best explain my values and ideas about the world.
We also learned about performance art. Performance artists use their bodies and action to inspire people’s thoughts about the world. Once, Professor Woods gave us paint, glue and colored paper, and let us do whatever we wanted to in an empty art room. At first, we just drew some flowers and animals on the walls; however, later, we poured paint on the walls and even broke the colored paper. This art experiment showed that when there are no rules, people can have strong destructive power (破坏力).
Our final project was making a performance art video. I made a video of myself taking care of an egg. I needed to wash the egg and talk to it every 15 minutes. I discovered my social life, rest times and study times were influenced by taking care of the egg. I wanted to use this video to show the difficulties of being a mother, and encourage society to think of motherhood as a real job.
In general, the video art class provided me with the chance to create videos by myself. It allowed me to learn more about modern arts. It was the most interesting and creative course I took this past term.
23.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
24.The writer made a video about food to ________.

C.explain his values and ideas about the world D.learn about cultural differences and social traditions
25.In Paragraph 3, Professor Woods used the art experiment to show ________.
A.there should be rules about performance art
B.art students could realize whatever they wanted
C.artworks painted on the walls were more creative
D.artists always used their bodies to express thoughts
26.The writer wants to ________.
A.show his performance videos B.introduce the course of video art
C.compare traditional art with modern art D.share his experience of taking the course
When you think of hot summer days, what comes to your mind? Eating ice cream from the fridge while staying in an air-conditioned(装空调的) room, right? However, do you know that fridges and air conditioners use lots of energy? Worldwide, 20% of total electricity is used to cool spaces. Yet, at the same time, without ways of cooling spaces, heat problem leads to nearly 40% of deaths. So some companies are developing new cooling ways that can help us stay safe and reduce pollution.
Researchers in the US have developed a white paint. The paint can reflect(反射) 98.1% of all sunlight that falls on it. At present, the paints we use can’t cool down the area and reflect about 80%—90% of sunlight. It took the researchers seven years to develop the paint. They did thousands of experiments. The results are fantastic—just covering an area of 1,000 square feet will produce a cooling power over 10kw. It’s more powerful than a central air conditioner.
At the same time, researchers in Saudi Arabia are developing a cooling system that can work without electricity. It uses the energy from sunlight to cool down. The system uses a natural phenomenon (现象) that happens when salt is added to water. As salt melts (融化) in warm water, it takes in energy and cools the water. After experimenting with different salts for their cooling system, the researchers chose something that is cheap and common. According to the study, within 20 minutes of adding the salt, the system cools to about 3.6℃. And it keeps a temperature below 15℃ for 15 hours! This technology can be used for cooling both spaces and food. And after that the salt can be reused as well.
If these technologies can be widely used, we will be able to eat ice cream in a cool room without using electricity!
27.At the beginning, the writer intends to ________ by asking questions.
A.catch the readers’ attention B.show his doubt on the topic
C.present his writing purpose D.describe the serious situation
28.How many new ways of cooling spaces are introduced in the passage?
A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four.
29.What do we know about the white paint from the passage?
A.It can be used to cover wider areas. B.Scientists developed it all over the world.
C.It’s as powerful as a central air conditioner. D.The area where it covers will be cooled down.
30.We can infer from the passage that ________.
A.new technologies will help us reduce pollution
B.it will be more expensive to cool food in the future
C.the cooling system can be used with less electricity
D.the temperature of summer days will stay below 15℃

Dear Simon,
I’m so glad that our school magazine Youth Voice will renew very soon. I have some ideas about adding new columns.
From my point of view, Great Works is a good choice. We can share famous books and learn about favourite writers. We will increase our knowledge and we can communicate more with others. What’s more, many students may be interested in Science Study. The world is developing at a high speed. If there is one column about the latest science discoveries, we will raise interest in science and be more creative. Besides, it’s better to add Animal World, animals are our friends and then Animal World will call on students to protect animals in danger.
I hope you will consider my advice and I believe our school magazine will be better!
Yours,
Li Hua
