Long ago in India, there was a wise mathematician(数学家)named Sessa. He invented a new game “chess”. His friend the king loved chess and told Sessa to ask for     16     he liked when they played every day. But instead of gold, he told the king that he wished only some grains of wheat(麦粒).

17    ?!” said the king in surprise.

Sessa answered, “I want few. Since you     18     my chessboard so much, give me a grain of wheat on the first square, two grains on the second square,     19     grains for the third one, and so on. For each square double, I will be the     20     man in the world.”

The king told his treasurer(财务大臣), “If the wheat is all he     21    , give it to him!”

The first day Sessa was given a grain of wheat, which made the court(王室人员)laugh. The second day he got two. On the ninth day, he received 256 grains, enough to make a small handful. He kept his     22    —to himself. It took him 16 days to get enough wheat to fill a large     23    . But only one more day he got two bags.

The treasurer and his court stopped     24    . By the end of the month, wagons(马车)filled with grain were driving to Sessa’s house and the treasurer began to look     25    .

Then he decided to tell the king, “By the simple doubling, Sessa has already collected all our wheat! What should we do if the thing     26    ? I doubt there is enough wheat in the whole world to pay him!”

27    !” said the king. But he checked and checked, and there was no doubt, he saw that by square 64, he would owe(欠)18, 446, 744, 073, 709, 551, 615 grains of wheat That much wheat could not be gathered in all of India for next 2000 years.

There was nothing for the king to do but call Sessa, and take back what he     28    . Sessa was happy with what he had already got—he did not ask the king for the second half of the     29    .

With that, the king and Sessa remained the best of friends. And the clever Sessa got a     30     and more mathematical king.

Do you like the amazing animals—dolphins? They sure are fun to watch jump and spin (快速旋转) out of the water, but have you ever wondered how they get the energy to do all their tricks? Do they sleep? Let’s dive into that mystery and learn all about how dolphins sleep.

    Do dolphins sleep?

Yes, the surprising fact is that dolphins sleep with one eye open at all times. In order to stay close to the surface so they can breathe, dolphins must stay partly awake while they sleep. How do they do this? Simple—one half of their brain sleeps at a time! This is called unihemispheric sleep.

    ________________

Research have shown that only half of dolphin’s brain sleep at a time, leaving the other part aware of dangers. Besides, dolphins need to surface every so often to breathe air in and out of their blowholes (holes in the top of the heads). With one side of their brain being awake at all times, a dolphin is able to surface for air while sleeping.

    Where do dolphins sleep?

Dolphins sleep in groups near the surface of the ocean so they can come up for air easily. These beautiful animals are social living things, so it’s very hard to see them alone. Not only is sleeping in a group of dolphins fun, but it also provides protection. If one dolphin spots danger when sleeping, they can wake up the rest of their family and quickly swim away or plan an attack.

    How long do dolphins sleep?

A dolphin needs about 8 hours of sleep a night. However, unlike humans, each side of their brain will take turns to sleep so they can stay partly awake throughout the night. Think of it like a 50/50 split—one side of the brain needs 4 hours of sleep, and then the other side needs 4 hours. These amazing animals can stay awake for at least 15 days if they have to.

34The writer starts to lead in the topic by ________.

    Atelling stories Bgiving examples

    Casking questions Dsharing experiences

35Which of the following can be best in ________?

AWhy do dolphins have unihemispheric sleep?

BHow do dolphins breath air in the water?

CWhat dangers do dolphins meet in the water?

DWhen do dolphins surface to breath air?

36We can learn from the passage that ________.

Adolphins always plan an attack when facing dangers alone

Bboth of the dolphin’s brains need eight hours’ sleep a night

Cdolphins need to surface often to breathe air with mouth

Ddolphin sleep with one eye open to keep away from the danger

37The passage is mainly about ________.

You may have already seen them in some restaurants around the world: robots. They are about the size of a child. They can welcome people and lead them to their tables. They can deliver food and drinks and bring dirty dishes back to the kitchen. Some have cat-like faces and even make noises when you touched their heads. But are robot waiters the future? It is a question the restaurant industry is trying to answer.

Many people think robot waiters are the answer to worker shortages. Sales of robots have been growing in recent years. There are tens of hundreds of them now moving through eating places worldwide.

In Madison Heights, Michigan, Li Zhai was having trouble finding workers for his restaurant Noodle Topia in the summer of 2021. So, he bought a robot from Pudu Robotics. The robot was so successful that he bought two more, Now, one robot leads diners to their seats white another delivers food to tables. Zhai said he now needs three people to do the same work that five or six people used to do. And they save him money. “A robot costs around $15, 000, but a person costs me $5, 000 to $6, 000 per month”, he said.

But others say robot waiters still have a long way to go before they can take the place of humans. They cannot take orders. And they cannot walk up steps to different areas of a restaurant. Restaurants are pretty chaotic(混乱的)places, so it’s very hard to use technology in a way that is really productive, said Craig Le Clair from the advising company Forrester.

Still, the use of robot waiters is growing. California-based Bear Robotics introduced its Servi robot in 2021. The company expects to have 10, 000 produced by the end of this year in 44 U. S. states and overseas. In China, Shenzen-based Pudu Robotics, which was founded in 2016, has produced more than 56, 000 robots worldwide. With the development in AI, it won’t be long before they become part of our everyday lives.

38The writer uses the example of Li Zhai to explain __________.

Arobot waiters are more useful than workers

Bit’s expensive to buy a robot waiter

Cfinding workers in Michigan is not difficult

Drobot waiters help solve worker shortage

39What’s Paragraph 4 of the passage mainly about?

AWhy robots can’t take the place of the humans.

BWhere robots can work for humans.

CHow the robots help the restaurant keepers.

DWhat the robots can do to help people.

40What’s the writer’s attitude towards the future of robot waiters?

    ADoubtful. BHopeful. CUncertain. DWorried.

41Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?

    A B C D

The next morning Dorothy and her friends, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow(稻草人), the Lion and Toto, left the Emerald City. They were told the way to the Witch’s house and “Everybody is afraid of the Witch(女巫)of the West. So be careful!” The West Witch had a magic eye, and it could see everything. She saw the friends on the road and she was angry. She put on her tall black hat and shouted, “Magic monkeys—come!”

In a second, forty monkeys arrived at her tall house.

“There are three people, a dog, and a lion on my road,” she said. “Kill the people and the dog. Bring the Lion here. He can work for me.”

“At once,” said the Monkeys. And away they went.

They broke the Tin Man’s arms and legs. They took all the straw out of the Scarecrow. Then they took the Lion and carried him to a dark cellar under the Witch’s house.

But they couldn’t hurt Dorothy and Toto because of the good Witch’s kiss. So the Monkeys carefully carried them to the Witch’s house. The West Witch saw the kiss on Dorothy’s face, and was afraid. But she did not tell Dorothy that. “You must work for me in my house now,” she said.

Dorothy did not know this—the red shoes are magic. The Witch wanted the shoes very much, but Dorothy never took them off. She took them off when she washed, but the Witch never went near water, she was very, very afraid of water.

One morning, Dorothy’s left shoe fell off. The Witch picked up the shoe at once and she tried to take Dorothy’s right shoe, too. Dorothy refused angrily. A bucket(桶)of water was near the door. Dorothy picked up the bucket and threw the water at the Witch. She cried out, “Help! Help! The water is killing me! The—water—is...”

The Witch disappeared! Only her tall black hat and a long dress were left.

“Now how can I help my friends?” Dorothy said. “Can I call the Magic Monkeys?” She picked up the Witch’s black hat and put on. Dorothy called, “Magic Monkeys—come!”

The Monkeys arrived in a second. “Please help my friends!” said Dorothy.

“Of course, we always help the wearer of the magic black hat.” said the Monkeys.

Then the Magic Monkeys made the Scarecrow and the Tin Man come back to life, set the Lion free from the cellar. Toto could not speak, but he jumped up and down happily.

    42Who is Toto?

44What made the Witch of the West go to die?

AThe Magic Monkeys. BThe tall black hat.

CDorothy’s red shoes. DThe bucket of water.

45How might Dorothy and her friends feel at the end of the story?

    Ladies and gentlemen,

Today, it’s my honor to be here to introduce Chinese national treasure—tea. Chinese tea, the most popular drink in the world, has a long history of about 5,000 years. There are so many kinds of tea, such as green tea, black tea, white tea. But in fact, it was invented by accident. Some leaves fell into the boiling water and remained there for a while. It produced a nice smell. That’s it!

As far as I know, people grow tea plants on the sides of mountains. When the leaves are ready, they are picked by hand and sent for processing. Then it is packed and sent to all over the world. It’s well-known that Chinese tea is good for our health. So let’s drink it!

    That’s all, thank you!
