An Exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Australia
    10 June —12 August 2019
Venue (地点) The Ian Potter Centre
    Admission Free entry
Charles Blackman is famous for his beautiful paintings of dreams. In 1956, he heard for the first time Lewis Carroll’s extraordinary tale of Alice in Wonderland—the story of a Victorian girl who falls down a rabbit hole, meets a lot of funny characters and experiences all kinds of things. At that time, Blackman’s wife was suffering from progressive blindness. The story of Alice moving through the strange situations, often disheartened by various events, was similar to his wife’s experiences. It also reflected so much of his own life. All this contributed to the completion of the Alice in Wonderland paintings.

What are your favorite stories you learned as a child? What stories do you hope your loved ones will tell about you when you aren’t around?
Storytellers were once known as “liars”. This was not to say their stories weren’t true. But they were often exaggerated in colorful ways that brought a story to life.
I grew up in a family of “liars”. They all told stories. And I grew up to earn my living by writing stories. The stories I write about my family are always true. But I can’t always be sure of every detail, so I rely on imagination to fill in the gaps.
My grandmother’s stories changed a bit each time she told them, and I smiled at how her changes made a story better. I loved hearing her stories. And my grandchildren seem to love hearing mine.
“Tell it again, Nana!” they say. I do, and they start laughing before I get to the funny part. Recently, they begged to hear a Halloween story I’ve told countless times. Here it is:
Once upon a time, when I was 10, my mother told me to make costumes (服装) and take my brothers to go trick-or-treating. Denton was 4. He looked like a monkey. Joe was 6 and totally blind. I threw a sheet over his head but forgot to tell him he was a ghost (鬼).
We knocked on the first door and waited. The door flew open, and we all shouted, “Trick-or-treat!” Mrs. Fisher patted Joe’s head through the sheet and said, “What a cute little ghost!”
And Joe yelled (叫喊), “I am not a ghost!”
True story. My grandchildren love it. They beg me to tell it again and again.
I hope to tell them more stories as they grow older. I want them to remember me and the big, crazy family I grew up in. Stories are the unbreakable threads that bind generations together, tell us who we are and give us hope.
My grandchildren have never met their “Great Uncle Joe”, but they won’t soon forget him. To them, he will always be, not a ghost, but very lovable.
14、Why did the author say she grew up in a family of liars?
    A. Because her family were good at telling lies.
    B. Because their stories were not true.
    C. Because all her family told stories.
    D. Because her grandmother would often change her stories.
15、What can we know from the article?
    A. Some family members often lie to one another.
    B. Stories may make one remembered in a way.
    C. Joe was the youngest child in the family.
    D. Joe liked to be called a ghost.
16、What can be the best title of the article?
    A. Living on through stories B. Great Uncle Joe
    C. Family liars D. Grandma’s stories
When given the choice, about 85% of people say they would not want to know about some negative event far in the future. Yet recently millions around the globe have downloaded FaceApp, which allows users to see how they might age in real life.
Many had fun with joking that they love the FaceApp old filter (滤镜). Beneath the humor is a serious subject: How do we learn to relate to our future selves? It’s important that we try to because it could help strengthen the long-term decisions that we make. However, we often fail to make sacrifices for the older versions of ourselves.
More than half of the respondents in a recent survey of 2, 800 Americans said they rarely or never thought about what their lives might be like 30 years from now. This isn’t surprising, since most of us are firmly rooted in the present and thinking about the distant future can seem like a distant priority. My ongoing research might also offer an explanation: We tend to think about our future selves as if they are someone different from who we are today. In an effort to narrow these empathy (共情) gaps, my research workmates and I have tried to humanize (使人性化) people’s future selves in the same way others have tried to humanize charity receivers. Given that a photograph of one hungry child can spark emotional reactions, and cause viewers to donate, we have provided participants with vivid images of their distant selves.
That seems helpful. In a recently completed project in Mexico, we found that exposure to future-self images led more people to add to their pensions (养老金). Despite this research, I’m not sure that the app users will suddenly increase their pension and care about their health. The silly app isn’t paired with an immediate opportunity to change any of these things.
The lesson from FaceApp shouldn’t be that we need to combine hi-tech visuals with savings for retirement. The lesson, then, leads to a question: What more can be done to urge us to think about, care for who we will one day become?
17、What can we learn about FaceApp?
    A. It provides future-self images. B. It is the most downloaded app.
    C. It helps people make decisions. D. It makes people age in real life.
18、Why do most respondents rarely think of their future life?
    A. They have known future life from FaceApp.
    B. They fail to make sacrifices for their future.
    C. They pay more attention to the present.
    D. They consider future selves the same as today’s.
19、What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 4 refer to?
    A. Completing a project in Mexico.
    B. Offering aging images of participants.
    C. Raising reflections among viewers.
    D. Giving a photograph of a hungry child.
20、What’s the author’s attitude to FaceApp?
    A. Positive. B. Objective. C. indifferent. D. Unfavorable.

When I saw her tonight she smiled and recognized me. I smiled back at her. She was looking more relaxed even though she was still busy doing her job. I have noticed her several times this last few months and she always looks so much happier now. Tonight when I talked with her I noticed her name tag. Her name is Pamela.
Pamela works at the express checkouts in a busy supermarket. She deals with problems when the self-service checkout experiences a problem (no price on product, machine problems, etc.). She monitors these checkouts and usually has hardly dealt with one complaint before another is created.
When I first talked to Pamela, I had called her to the checkout I was using. There wasn’t any problem with the checkout though. What all I cared was about Pamela. She looked tired and was under a lot of stress as she quickly moved from one checkout to the next. It’s a bit of a fire-fighting job.
I told Pamela that she needed to slow down. I told her she wasn’t getting paid enough to be working as hard as she was working. I told her that we, the customers, could wait and it was very bad for her health to be putting herself under such pressure. I told her that our expectations were not as hard as the ones she set for herself. Pamela told me she would slow down. I could tell she was touched that not only did I notice her stress but I chose to talk to her about it and was worried about her health. I gently told her things had to change. I told her I would be looking out for her in future to see if she had taken my advice on board. She smiled and said, “I promise that I will next time.”
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    参考答案
    1、答案:C
B.let off his steam发泄他的怒气;C.pull his weight做好他自己份内的工作;D.rise to his feet站起来。根据句中take some of the pressure off stressed-out working mothers可推知, 句中指父亲们也应该在家里出一份力, 做好自己份内的工作, 帮助母亲们减轻一些压力。
    3、答案:A
故选:A。
    5、答案:A
A.acquire获得;B.maintain保持;C.illustrate 阐述;D.advance前进。 故选:A。
解析:动词bathe的逻辑主语就是前面的the sun began to rise in the sky, 构成逻辑上的主谓关系, 用现在分词(ing), 在这里表伴随, 也可说表结果。
解析:A.Because因为;B.Though虽然;C.A像...... 根据句意可知, 前后句意有转折关系, "it may be possible to measure the value of material goods in terms of money"是让步状语从句, 用从属连词though引导该从句, 意为"虽然";另外as虽也能引导让步状语从句, 但从句必须使用倒装。
The story of Alice moving through the strange situations, often disheartened by various events, was similar to his wife’s experiences. It also reflected so much of his own life. All this contributed to the completion of the Alice in Wonderland paintings。
Find out how Charles Blackman distorted scale in his paintings to create a curious world, then experiment with scale in your own drawings是在Venue Foyer,Level 3展览的Drawing Workshop。
Storytellers were once known as "liars".This was not to say their stories weren't true."(讲故事的人曾被称为"说谎者"。 可排除干扰项A和B, 后文" they were often exaggerated(夸大的) in colorful ways that brought a story to life"也解释称"liars"是因为讲故事的人喜欢润色生活中的事;再根据第三段"I grew up in a family of "liars".They all told stories."(我成长于一个满是"说谎者"的家庭。
My grandchildren have never met their "Great Uncle Joe", but they won't soon forget him.To them, he will always be, not a ghost, but very lovable"(我的孙子们从未见过他们的"叔祖父乔", 但他们却不会那么快忘记他。
    16、答案:A
My grandchildren have never met their "Great Uncle Joe", but they won't soon forget him.To them, he will always be, not a ghost, but very lovable"(我的孙子们从未见过他们的"叔祖父乔", 但他们却不会那么快忘记他。
    17、答案:A
When given the choice, about 85% of people say they would not want to know about some negative event far in the future. Yet recently millions around the globe have downloaded FaceApp, which allows users to see how they might age in real life. 故选A.
This isnnt surprising, since most of us are firmly rooted in the present and thinking about the distant future can seem like a distant priority (优先).
Given that a photograph of one hungry child can spark emotional reactions, and cause viewers to donate, we have presented participants with vivid images of their distant selves. That seems helpful. In a recently completed project in Mexico, we found that exposure to future-self images led more people to contribute to their pensions. 这里的 vivid images of their distant selves应该指的是年老的照片,所以that指代的是提供参与者的老化图象。
Despite this research, I\m skeptical that the app users will suddenly increase their pension contributions and care about their health. The silly app isnnt paired with an immediate opportunity to change any of these things. A.
解析:①A. The sound coming from Taronga Zoo Sydney in Australia may sound like the cries of a human baby. It's just a brown,long-tailed bird named Echo that has learned how to mimic (模仿)the cries of human babies.(这只是一只名叫Echo的棕色长尾鸟,它学会了如何模仿人类婴儿的哭声。)" 上一句的"the cries of a human baby"和A项的"don't be alarmed"相对应。A项:However, don't be alarmed.(然而,不要惊慌。) 故选A。
②E. Echo is a superb lyrebird (琴鸟),an Australian bird named for the shape of its tail.(Echo是一种极好的竖琴鸟,一种澳大利亚的鸟,因其尾巴的形状而得名。)" It's a U-shaped stringed instrument that was popular in ancient Greece.(它是一种U形的弦乐器,在古希腊很流行。)"可知,此处讲述的是琴鸟尾巴的形状,E项中的"The tail "和上文中的"its tail",E项中的"an instrument "和下文的"a U-shaped stringed instrument "对应。E项:The tail looks like an instrument known as a lyre.(尾巴看起来像一种叫做七弦琴的乐器。)
They can copy just about any sound in their immediate surroundings, including those from car engines,as well as animal sounds, such as dog barks and bird calls.(它们几乎可以复制周围环境中的任何声音,包括汽车引擎的声音,以及动物的声音,如狗叫和鸟叫。)" Lyrebirds are experts at mimicking.(琴鸟是模仿的专家。)
But it's not clear how he perfected the calls,as the zoo is closed to visitors because of COVID-19 lockdowns in Sydney.Glebiowski said,"I can only guess that he picked it up from our guests. Obviously he has been working on his craft during lockdown.(显然他在禁闭期间一直在练他的手艺。)
Male lyrebirds use their mimicking talents mainly for mating.(雄性琴鸟的模仿能力主要用于交配。)"和"Their songs consist of a lot of different bird calls that they have picked up from their surroundings.(它们的歌声包含了很多不同的叫声,这些叫声是它们从周围环境中听到的。)"可知,此处表示求偶时会发出其他声音,G项中的"other nonbird sounds "与上文"consist of a lot of different bird calls"对应。G项:But sometimes their mating songs incorporate other nonbird sounds.(但有时它们求偶时发出的声音会夹杂其他非鸟的声音。)

    37、答案:①was inspired②working③Born④actively⑤to apply⑥which⑦a⑧in⑨experiments⑩confident
故填was inspired。

故填in。

But animals are our friends. They play a very important role in our life. For one thing, wild animal is a key component of ecosystem.Without them,we can not keep a sustainable environment for human beings to live on, let alone living quality. For another, animals have their right to live on harmoniously with men, but it is men whose action including hunting and damaging the environment endanger their existence.

When I saw her she was still doing her job but there was such a difference. I praised the new her. Now Pamela said that other customers would have to wait for their turn while she dealt with another customer. As a result, she wasn't that busy. She told me the change had significantly improved her health. She added that she'd also shared what I said with her colleagues. As I walked away from Pamela my heart was lightened. She has taken my advice on board and tried to slow down her working pace. A day's work means just that. It doesn't mean that one should put two days' work into one day.
I am proud of myself. Not only have I caused Pamela to reflect on the stress she was putting herself under, but also she in turn has encouraged her colleagues in the supermarket to do the same. I really feel very happy and satisfied for my concern and act of kindness do make a difference to those in need. It's just a simple act of love costing no money that can solve the problem. So my friends, our kindness doesn't have to be material, but just loving. Bless you all for all you do for others.
