The idea of “saving face” is both a well-known idea and phrase (短语) in the West. But at the same time, it’s a difficult concept (概念) for Westerners to fully understand. To put it simply, this comes down to how China and the West have built up their societies and cultures differently from one another over time. As an American, I will talk about it by using the US as my example.
At its heart, American culture celebrates individualism (个人主义) and directness while in China it’s more about remaining good relationships and harmony (和谐) as a whole.
For example, if you were in a business group meeting in the US, you might be appreciated by your peers for giving direct advice to your boss because it shows initiative (主动性). In China, it may be better to be less direct and talk to your boss later in private instead.
Another example of “face” in daily life is if you were to see an older gentleman on the street with toilet paper stuck on his shoe. In the US, people would take him aside and quietly tell him about the issue so he could take it off. This way you would be helping to save him the personal embarrassment (尴尬) of not noticing it sooner. But, on the other hand, some of my Chinese friends would think it better not to mention it and let the gentleman find it on his own later. In this way, it could spare the gentleman from public embarrassment or losing face in front of others.
By knowing how “saving face” works differently in Western countries and China, you are well on your way toward managing any kind of social situation with grace.
31.From the first example, we know that ______.
A.people in the US prefer to give advice directly
B.Chinese people like to talk person-to-person
C.Chinese people are not good at giving advice
D.people in the US don’t talk behind others’ backs
32.The second example shows that ______.
A.“saving face” works the same in the US and China
B.Chinese people are more afraid of embarrassment
C.people from both countries are brave to point out problems
D.Chinese people don’t care about the embarrassment of others
33.Which of the following can describe the author’s opinions? ( )
a.The directness of US people helps them save face.
b.US people don’t care about the harmony of a community.
c.Chinese people try to avoid losing face in front of others.
d.Chinese people’s sense of face often depends on the harmony of the whole.

ChatGPT is back in the headlines! Open AI, the company behind the popular chatbot, has now introduced a powerful new language model: GPT-4.
On March 14, GPT-4 showed the world how smarter it is than the previous GPT-3.5. One of its best new features is that it can understand pictures. For example, if you show a picture of a phone using the wrong charger (充电器), GPT-4 can tell why the picture looks strange or funny.
But GPT-4’s developments don’t stop there. The new language model can code (用代码编写)classic games like Tetris (俄罗斯方块) in a matter of minutes, and produce the code and layout (布局) for a website based on a hand-made drawing. It can also change the tone (语气) and style based on what you ask it to do. GPT-4 is much easier for students to cheat (作弊) than the older GPT at passing tests, which may worry teachers. According to CNN, GPT-4 did really well on a law school test, with a score in the top 10 percent of test takers. But GPT-3.5 only got a score in the bottom 10 percent.
GPT-4 will also see greater use as a tool to power other apps and services. For example, the language learning app Duolingo plans to use GPT-4 in their upcoming Duolingo Max function. Users can learn languages by talking with AI. Another app, Be My Eyes, will have a digital assistant (数字助手) to help blind people better understand the world around them. The government of Iceland also plans to use GPT-4 to protect the Icelandic language.
There are still problems with the new language model, however. GPT-4 still struggles to get completely correct answers, especially with newer information after September 2021. GPT-4 also sometimes “hallucinates (产生幻觉)”, meaning that it will insist that wrong information is true.
34.What can we infer from Paragraph 2? ( )
A.GPT-3.5 cannot understand pictures. B.GPT-4 can create funny pictures.
C.GPT-4 can tell if a phone is recharging. D.GPT-4 can show the result in a fun way.
35.The underlined phrase “in a matter of minutes” in paragraph 3 shows that ______.
A.games like Tetris are easy to code
B.anyone can code games using GPT-4
C.GPT-4 can code games like Tetris quickly
D.hand-made drawings help GPT-4 work better
36.What worry does GPT-4 bring to teachers? ( )
A.It can change tones based on a user’s input.
B.It may help students cheat on tests easily.
C.Students will lose their competitiveness.
D.It will take the place of teachers in the future.
37.How will the Duolingo Max users get help from GPT-4? ( )
A.AI can help them make personalized study plans.
B.Blind people can communicate through the app.
C.They can practice languages by talking with AI.
D.They can find many dying languages on the app.

Fixed point, aerial photographing, racing... Drone (无人机) competitions include many different events and take years of practice. Liang Aolin, a high school student from Shenzhen, Guangdong, is no exception. Since 12 years old, Liang has been practicing drone racing with her dad, and has got into the national team twice. In July 2022, the 16-year-old girl took part in the Drone Racing competition at the World Games 2022 in Birmingham, Alabama, US. She represented China and ranked fourth.
“I chose racing because it sounded the most exciting to me,” Liang said, “and it proved me right. Drone racing takes fast reactions and flexibility (灵活性), so even though there are no age limitations (限制), young people still have an advantage in this sport.”
How do drones compete? Liang said that the idea of drone racing is similar to that of the hurdle race (跨栏跑). “There are hurdles at different heights, so by avoiding them, our ability to control the drones is tested,” she added. The fun part is that every track consists of different sets of hurdles, making every competition feel like opening a mystery box.
The track of the World Games 2022 was a big surprise to Liang. “The hurdles were even set on the bleachers (看台), creating a dynamic three-dimensional track, which never occurs in our daily training due to space limitations,” Liang said. Fortunately, Liang stayed calm and performed steadily.
This experience also made her realize the difference between China and other countries in drone racing training. “For European countries and the US, people have natural advantages to train because most houses have yards for them to practice. Therefore, it’s easier for this sport to be popular there,” said Liang.
Through years of training and competition, Liang feels that drone racing has helped her stay calm in all situations and accept both victories and losses. Having already made the national team twice, she will try her best to enter next time.
In the future, Liang wants to study at Beihang University or Northwestern Polytechnical University and then work for a drone company. “I love drones and I want my future career to be related to that,” Liang said.
38.What do we know about Liang, according to the text? ( )
A.She has joined the national team three times.
B.She didn’t get support from her family at first.
C.She won fourth place at the World Games 2022.
D.She’s been practicing drone racing for three years.
39.According to Liang, what advantage do young people have in drone racing? ( )
A.They are easier to be trained. B.They react more quickly and flexibly.
C.They have greater physical strength. D.They have more experience for the game.
40.What advantage do European countries and the US have over China in terms of drone racing? ( )
A.People can get drones more easily. B.People have more open space for practice.
C.People show greater interest in drones. D.Higher prize money is offered in competitions.
41.What character does Liang believe she has developed through drone racing? ( )
A.Humour. B.Bravery. C.Kindness. D.Calmness.

When Branwell was fourteen or fifteen, he did a lot of oil paintings. He painted people in the village, and it was easy to recognise the faces in the pictures. Later, he did a fine painting of his three sisters. I was very proud of him. We all decided he would become a famous artist.
Charlotte went to school again when she was fifteen. It was a much better school—Miss Wooler’s school at Roe Head. I don’t think Charlotte liked school, but she wanted to be a governess (女家庭教师), so she worked hard. I taught Branwell at home, and Aunt Branwell taught Emily and Anne. The girls and Branwell were learning to play the piano, and Branwell played the music in church.
Emily and Anne had dogs, and they used to take them for walks on the moors. Anne’s dog was called Flossy, and Emily had a big strong one called Keeper. Keeper went everywhere with her. I think Emily loved that dog more than any person. Emily was sometimes a difficult child. She was very shy, and did not often speak to anyone outside the family. When she was older, I sent her to school with Charlotte, but she hated it, so I brought her home and sent Anne instead.
Branwell was not shy. He could talk to anyone for hours. Everyone in Haworth liked him. I remember the day in 1835 when Branwell went to London. He was eighteen years old, and he was going to the Royal Academy in London to learn to be an artist. He walked down the hill in Haworth with a bag of his best paintings on his back, and everyone in the village came out to see him go. That was a great day for me. Something terrible happened in London, but I don’t know what it was. Branwell came back two weeks later, his face white, his clothes dirty. I don’t know what happened in London. He refused to tell me. He just sat upstairs, alone in his room for hours.
Later, I paid for a room in Bradford for him to work in. He could paint pictures of famous people there, I thought. It was easy work for him. But he couldn’t do it. He spent all my money, and came home again after a while.
This was a sad time for me. My eyes were very bad, and I had to pay a young curate to help me with my work for the church. My old servant, Tabby, broke her leg and was very ill. And then one day I got a letter from Miss Wooler’s school. My curate read it to me.
“Dear Mr Bronte,” the letter said, “I am afraid that your daughter Anne is very ill, and...”
I don’t think I ever moved so fast in all my life. Six hours later, I was at Roe Head. The next day Anne and Charlotte were at home. Anne was still alive, thank God! A month later she was well again. Thank God.
All my children were safe at home.
I was happy to have them here. They were so clever, and kind, and they loved each other so much. But I was an old man with bad eyes, and Aunt Branwell and I had very little money. My children had to find work somewhere, in order to live.
But what sort of work could they do?
42.What is the correct order of Branwell’s experiences? ( )
a.He went to Royal Academy to learn to be an artist.
b.Something terrible happened to him in London.
c.He painted lots of oil paintings of people in the village.
d.He spent all the money in Bradford and came home.
A.c-b-a-d B.a-b-d-c C.a-c-b-d D.c-a-b-d
43.The underlined word “curate” in paragraph 6 probably means “______”.
A.a person who teaches others B.a person who cares for the sick
C.a person who manages a church D.a person who works in another person’s home
44.Which of the following is true according to the article? ( )
A.Charlotte worked hard because she liked school very much.
B.Emily was a shy girl and never speaks to anyone outside the family.
C.Branwell was an out-going boy and everyone in Haworth liked him.
D.Anne came back home from school because Mr Bronte’s eyes were very bad.
45.Which can be the best title for the passage? ( )
A.Growing up B.Branwell’s paintings
C.Mr Bronte’s problems D.A letter from Miss Wooler’s school

As a deputy to the 14th National People’s Congress (全国人民代表大会), Jin Ruirui, 33, wore a traditional Yi costume and brought Yi embroidery (彝绣) to this year’s two sessions (两会). Jin is an inheritor (传承人) of the Yi embroidery of Chuxiong Yi autonomous prefecture (自治州), Southwest China’s Yunnan province. She has brought suggestions for developing the local embroidery industry and promoting (促进) women’s employment (就业).
Jin was among the first group of college students in her village, but instead of working in big cities, she chose to come back to her hometown to set up her own Yi embroidery company. “My mother raised me with the money she made as an embroiderer. I want to carry on her skills and help more embroiderers who are just like my mother—they might not get much education, but they know well about our local culture,” said Jin.
Jin went on field trips to many local villages and found that there were many left-behind children with their parents working far away in big cities.“Think about how good it will be if embroidery can bring them enough money so that they can work at home and stay together with their children,” Jin said, remembering how she started her career.
With the support from the local government and the hard work of people like Jin, Yi embroidery has become a growing industry. They train embroiderers and hire designers to make the embroidery pieces more modern. They hold fashion shows promoting Yi costumes in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai and do business with other provinces and even foreign countries. Jin just got an export (出口) order of 6, 500 Yi embroidered costumes to the UK last month.
During the past 10 years, more than 60, 000 Yi women in Chuxiong have taken part in the local Yi embroidery industry. Their average (平均) monthly income (收入) grew from about 500 yuan to around 3,000 yuan. “Now, even some men have started to work as embroiderers, taking up about 4 percent of the workforce staff,” Jin added. “We have made our lives better with our traditional culture and skills.”

八、书面表达 (共25分)
Possible version one:
It makes me happy
It’s not age that makes people grow up, it’s experience. Rich and colorful junior high school life is full of ups and downs.
When I started middle school, I had no idea how to talk to my classmates. I often felt lonely.
But an unexpected small thing happened and ended my boring school life. One of my classmates invited me to her birthday party. I was so surprised because we were not familiar with each other at all. But I accepted the invitation. On her birthday, I gave her flowers and a birthday card as presents. We watched a movie together and talked about it. Sharing the same views with her made me feel excited. I regretted that we could not be friends earlier. It ended just as you’d expect, we became best friends. I don’t feel bored at school anymore.
I always remember that day and I realize what best friends mean to my life.
Possible version two:
It makes me grow up
It’s not age that makes people grow up, it’s experience. Rich and colorful junior high school life is full of ups and downs.
I didn’t realize that teamwork is much more important than personal performance until I lost the soccer match.
Last week, our team lost the game in the “City Mayor Cup”. I still remember clearly when I had the ball on the field, coming up to the goal. I was in a better position to pass the ball instead of shooting. One of my teammates was in the best position to shoot and score. But I really wanted to score the goal myself and win the match.
