A few weeks ago, my teenage daughter Lisa failed a test. The grade might stop her from qualifying for the next class she wants to take. There were tears and some complaints for a few minutes. Then I saw something interesting. She made a joke, expressed gratitude that she didn't have bigger problems, and finally made a plan on how to make improvements.
She was never the same as she was one year ago. That one was unwilling to take responsibility. That one stayed in anger and blamed others. We expect our kids to learn and grow. We hope for it. However, most of us grow through adversity(逆境), even trauma(精神创伤). It happened to Lisa last year repeatedly. She searched for ways to get her bearings and equip herself when everything around her was changing by the day. Psychologists call it post-traumatic growth.
Trauma refers to an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, attack, natural disaster, or other life-changing happenings. The growth after trauma doesn't mean we get through challenges uninjured. It's been a scary and painful time, for everyone, in one way or another. We may experience disbelief, depression, and even denial. As time moves on, people who have experienced trauma may have headaches or other physical symptoms, emotional ups and downs, and even relationship problems. Trauma does leave its irremovable marks.
However, in one study, researchers surveyed nearly 385 people who experienced financial difficulty during the pandemic. 88 percent of the people surveyed say they also have experienced some positive outcomes—They now have stronger family relationships and a greater appreciation of life.
    24. What is Lisa like now when she fails?
    A. She tries to cover it. B. She is positive and appreciative.
    C. She is unconcerned. D. She wants to make excuses.
    25. What does the author intend to tell us through Lisa's experience?
    A. There is no sweet without sweat.
    B. Experience is the father of wisdom.
    C. Difficult situations are likely to make one stronger.
    D. Responsibility is often more important than ability.
    26. How does the author prove his view?
    A. By analyzing existing data. B. By quoting a psychologist.
    C. By contrasting a person's constant changes. D. By giving examples together with study results.
    27. Which of the following may the author agree with about post-traumatic growth?
    A. It usually comes at a high price.
    B. It produces little negative feelings.
    C. It is one of the fastest ways to make improvements.
    D. It is growth that does both good and harm.
    C
A 5,300-year-old Chinese city that provides the earliest example of civilization in the country has been named China's latest UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Liangzhu Archaeological Site in Zhejiang Province was designated a “cultural site" at the ongoing UNESCO meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan, bringing the total number of Chinese heritage sites to 55—surpassing(超过)Italy as the country with the largest number in the world.
The ruins, located in Hangzhou, sit on the plain of river networks in the basin of the Yangtze River and date back to around 3,300 BC. The site covers an area of 14.3 square kilometers and includes relics of 11 dams, cemetery sites(墓址), a water protection system and walls that give evidence to an early Chinese city civilization, with planting rice as the economic foundation.
The discovery of the site was of "primary importance" as it provides good evidence that Chinese civilization started around 5,000 years ago—1,000 years earlier than previously thought. Colin Renfrew, a retired professor of archaeology at the University of Cambridge said, "So when we are talking about the origins of state society in China, we can think of the Liangzhu instead of the Shang civilization around 1,500 BC.”
The site was first discovered in 1936 when a team of archaeologists unearthed some pottery(陶器)and began searching for further evidence. A breakthrough came in 1986 when a cemetery site with around 1,200artifacts was uncovered. The walls of the city were discovered in 2007 and the surrounding water protection system was unearthed in 2015. Archaeologists think that it would have taken 4,000 people working for ten years to build the system.
The decision to add the site to the UNESCO list is the result of more than twenty years' work, with preparations starting in 1994. The site is now open to tourists, but the number allowed to visit the site is limited to 3,000 a day and bookings must be made online.
    28. What does the underlined word“designated”in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A. Cited. B. Named C. Developed. D. Created.
    29. Why is the discovery of the site very important?
    A. It proves state society's origins around 1500 BC. B. It proves the existence of Shang civilization.
    C. It proves China's 5000-year-old civilization. D. It proves China has the longest civilization.
    30. What can be inferred from the text?
    A. A burial site was first unearthed in 1994.
    B. The discovery proves China has the longest history around the world.
    C. It took UNESCO 20 years to include the site in its list.
    D. China is taking measures to protect the site.
    31. Where can the passage be found?
    A. In a novel B. In a news report
    C. In an art magazine D. In an advertisement
    D
A study has shown how ecotourism in the Philippines has changed people's attitudes towards marine(海洋的)conservation(保护).
Researchers from the University of Victoria and other institutes in Philippines visited three sites where tourists pay to swim with whale sharks in the wild. They interviewed a range of locals in Oslob, Donsol and Pintuyan, including fishers and ex-whale shark hunters. At Oslob, the largest of the three sites, people were more likely to speak about the resulting improvements to their quality of life and an increase in job opportunities. At the smaller, less profitable sites, responses were more likely to be about the changes in how people behaved towards the whale sharks.
Dr. Jackie Ziegler, leader of the team of researchers, said, "Many of the people reported they now care about and value whale sharks because of tourism activities. They also expressed the community's emotional connection to the species and the strong need to protect them. Before the introduction of tourist activities, most of the locals admitted to harming the sharks by hitting them with stones or riding them." In terms of attitudes towards the wider marine environment, the majority of respondents now actively encourage others to care for the ocean and they also use more sustainable(可持续的)fishing practices.
The study also acknowledged the possible negative effects of tourism on the marine environment, such as effects on the health of local coral reefs(珊瑚礁)and of the sharks. It concluded that further studies were needed to assess these effects before firm conclusion could be drawn on the positive effect of whale sharks tourism on ocean conservation.
Nevertheless, the researchers say their work suggests ecotourism can be an effective means of strengthening protection. "Bringing in the views of the local tour operation to the study was necessary in uncovering the true effect of whale shark tourism and the wider benefit to the ocean conservation in the Philippines,” Dr Ziegler added.
    32. When interviewed, local people did NOT talk about__________?
    A. Improvement of life. B. Behaviours towards sharks.
    C. Increases of work chances D. Relationships between people.
    33. Which word can best describe locals' action towards marine life before ecotourism?
    A. Protective. B. Satisfying. C. Unsustainable. D. Suitable.
    34. What will the researchers possibly do next?
    A. Improve local living conditions.
    B. Draw a firm conclusion about the effect.
    C. Encourage fishers to hunt more whale sharks.
    D. Assess possible negative effects tourism may bring.
    35. What may be the best title of the text?
    A. Ecotourism Transforms Locals' Attitudes to Marine Conservation.
    B. Ecotourism Does Much Good to Marine Life as Before.
    C. Marine ecotourism Gives Rise to a New Kind of Business.
    D. Ecotourism Has Brought Large Benefits to People.

    A Son's Love
Our church congregation(教会)in Toronto has a way of helping those who have financial difficulties without making the receiver feel shame or guilt. Money is dropped into an offering box with only the name of the receiver on the envelope. The envelopes are then given to those members without them knowing the name of the giver. In this way, many struggling families managed to get through the tough days.
There came a time when my husband and I were among those in need. We went bankrupt because of business failure. The whole world seemed to fall down. However, we did not talk about our financial difficulty with anyone. The only fact our children knew was that we had to cut back on many things. We hoped they were not aware of the extent of our need, nor of how much their father and I were suffering because of it. We did not want to burden them with a problem they could do nothing to solve, though our eldest son, Jim, was working in his spare time to get some small earnings for college tuition(学费).
Time went by. Our situation wasn't improving, and my husband and I finally knew that we would have to look for outside help. We tried every possible means, but no one seemed to work. Just as we reached the point of despair, our church gave us a gift envelope that had been left in the offering box. We were overjoyed to receive a good amount of money, enough to bring us through that difficult time. We couldn't help but wonder who had given such a generous gift. We were extremely relieved and much grateful. Everything was changing for the better gradually and Jim was luckily admitted into a good university.

    Possible version:
In order to get students closer to nature, our school organized us to hike to Xishan Hill last Friday.
We gathered at the school gate at eight o’clock in the morning, and then we headed to Xishan. Along the way, we appreciated the beauty of spring and sang happily. Varieties of flowers were blooming and nature seemed to come alive again. The fresh air and beautiful scenery made us comfortable and relaxed.
The activity was highly spoken of and turned out to be a great success. Not only does it broaden our horizons but it also relieves our academic burden.
    possible version:
It was then that we discovered Jim’s bank account was almost empty. His father and I were very disturbed by this. From the time he was nine years old, he had been a paper carrier. We had trusted him to put part of his wages into the bank towards his education and he worked rather hard for these small savings. “Where is the money?” I asked him repeatedly. He just hummed and hawed, which made me even angrier. I would not let the matter alone. I needed a reasonable explanation. There was an atmosphere of tension in the room.
After what seemed like a century, Jim finally broke the tense silence. In tears, and with great reluctance, my son murmured, “I put the money in that offering box for you.” Everything came out in the wash. I stood there speechless, tears filling my eyes. It had taken him years to save that money but he had given it to us willingly—without telling us what he had done. I gave him a big hug and it was at the moment that I sensed the warmth and love of my son.

M: I’d really love to, but I’m on a diet.
    2. W: Have you put your glasses in your schoolbag, Andy?
M: Yes, and my ruler. I forgot that yesterday. Come on! Let’s go or we’ll miss the school bus.
    3. M: Would you like to go to the park with me later? I’m going to try out my new camera and take some beautiful photos.
W: I’d love to, but I have my biology class this afternoon. Enjoy your new camera.
    4. M: It’s very lovely. You can just put your phone in it.
W: Yes. It was made in China. I need it to go with a dress my aunt bought me.
    5. W: I didn’t see you on the bus. Your normal seat was empty.
M: I was at the stop when Jack drove by. He gave me a lift.
W: I thought you might have taken the train.
    6. M: Are you still OK for going to the zoo on Saturday?

M: What? I was looking forward to that.
W: Or we could go horse-riding?
M: I’m not sure I can afford that.
W: Well, the movie about the woman who rescues animals is on in town all week. We could see that.

M: Yeah. But you were really quiet at that time, weren’t you?
    W: Yeah. I wasn’t very outgoing.
M: But you were always friendly. Do you still play basketball?
W: Yes, but I’m more interested in music these days. I play the piano, and I often go to concerts. How about you? Do you still like playing tennis?
M: Of course. It’s still my favorite activity.
    8. M: My history professor says I should think about a job in politics. But I don’t think I’d make a good politician.
    W: Why not?
M: You know me. I’m not good at dealing with people. And politicians have to work with people all the time.
W: That’s true. So what do you think you want to do?
M: I think I will be a good artist. I love painting pictures.
W: That reminds me of a problem I’m having. You know my parents have a restaurant, right? They want me to be the manager.
    M: And you want to?
W: No way. A restaurant manager has to manage other people. It’d be terrible. I’m too disorganized. Honestly, I want to be a teacher because I like working with kids, and I’m good at it.
    M: That’s true.
    9. W: I visited the countryside museum last week. It opened two months ago. You’d like it there.
M: Why? Is there lots of information about trees?
W: No. It’s about wild birds that live in the forest. You can watch videos there too.
M: Oh! Is it open on Saturdays?
W: Yes. It’s only closed on Mondays. I went on a Thursday.
    M: And where is it?
W: It’s fifteen miles from here. It took about twenty minutes to get there and about thirty to get home because the roads were busier then. Here’s a map for your parents.
    M: Thanks.
W: When I went, there was a special plant exhibition but they’re having a study day for teenagers there soon about different kinds of clouds.
M: Do I have to pay for the study day?
    W: You’re fourteen, aren’t you?
    M: Yes.
W: Well, you won’t because it’s free for students who are your age or younger. But it costs £18 for students who are sixteen or older.
M: Thanks. I’ll tell my parents.
W: Yesterday, I went to a place called Sidelli with my family. It was really interesting. On the morning, we visited a theater. It was built 2,000 years ago beside the sea and people used to watch plays there in the open air. There used to be an old fishing village nearby. After that, we had a guided tour. Rather than go to the old palace, which is full of tourists, our guide took us up a hill and showed us around what’s left of a library. Most of it had fallen down, but it still had a fantastic atmosphere. We then took a bus into the countryside for lunch, and we ate next to a waterfall. Afterwards, we took a walk from there to a lake. In the afternoon, we chose to go on one of two different factory tours. One factory made pots and plates, which sounded dull to me, and one produced carpets. That was the one we went on. There were lots of traditional designs, all made by local people. It was Amazing. That was the last thing we did that day.
