    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 ABC  D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

    A

Social workers’ roles in helping individuals and communities have become necessary. Many

disadvantaged  individuals and  communities  need  their support.  They  are highly  valued.  The

    following are some of them.

    School social workers

These social  workers create  strategies to  help students’  academic performance  and social

development with teachers and  parents. They help students with issues such  as bullying (欺凌).

School social workers  also talk with  families to solve  absences (缺席)  from  class or access to

special  education resources.  While  school  social  workers and  guidance  advisers  share some

similarities, they have some differences. School social workers focus more on a student’s personal

    life.

    2

    Child and family social workers

These social workers help families protect children. They support families in finding housing

and childcare services and help apply for benefits. When children are badly treated, they will bring

them to a  better living situation. Some  work to reunite separated families  or organize adoptions

    (收养).

    Health care social workers

These social workers  help patients understand  the causes of their  illnesses and adjust  their

lifestyles.  They also  help  doctors  understand  how illnesses  affect  their  patients’ mental  and

emotional health.  Social work with  the elderly, long-term pain  management and medical  social

work are a few of the strengths of health care social workers.

Mental health and substance abuse social workers

These social workers help patients who have mental illnesses or addictions. They educate the

patients on  how to deal  with their condition.  Typically, those specializing in  mental health  and

substance abuse  social work are  officially clinical  (临床的)   social workers,  allowing them  to

judge and provide treatment for their patients.

    21. What do school social workers do?

    A. Offer more education chances.

    B. Provide treatment for students.

    C. Improve students’ academic performance.

    D. Help doctors understand the effect of illnesses on patients.

    22. Which kind of social workers should a man turn to if he is addicted to wine?

    A. School social workers.

    B. Health care social workers.

    C. Child and family social workers.

    D. Mental health and substance abuse social workers.

    23. What is the purpose of the text?

    A. To introduce.

    B. To advise.

    C. To advertise.

    D. To persuade.

    B

The first time I realized that I had a love for sports competitions was during the Field Day in

primary school. Small for my age, and more of a book-lover than a sports-lover, I had suffered that

special humiliation of being picked last for various gym teams. The Field  Day, which focused on

individual skills, was different. In the Softball Throw event, I got my first taste of sporting victory.

Credit goes to the example of my first coach, my father. He lifted weights every morning at home.

He bought us all baseball gloves and hats, and in the warm months, we spent hours playing catch.

When fall came, our backyard football games began with passing practice.

Once I got to  sixth grade and went to  private school, all the students  were asked to join in

    3

either the Red  or the White team. Throughout  the year, we fought against  each other in various

games  and exercises  for points.  I  eventually became  president  of The  Committee of  Games,

speeding up my competitive fever. However, in  girls’ sports games at my school, I was no star. I

also played on the field hockey team and  the basketball team. There were no school sports at the

weekends, as they do today,  but at home, playing tennis, skating,  skiing and biking were simply

normal things we did. During  break time, magazines were also quite popular  for us teens. These

regularly featured articles on physical exercise. Somehow, my college roommate and I took up the

habit  of completing  Royal  Canadian Air  Force  (RCAF)  exercises  every day,  a  practice that

continued into my marriage, when we had no spare funds to use to join a gym.

So, though it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation (基础) developed in adulthood

into a sports and health focus, considered necessary even on vacation. I  still love reading and the

arts, too. I think, life is the richest with my feet in both worlds.

    24. What does the underlined word “humiliation” mean in paragraph 1?

    A. Desire.

    B. Shame.

    C. Emotion.

    D. Regret.

    25. In the author’s opinion, what led to her victory in the Softball Throw event?

    A. Her advanced sports outfits.

    B. The sports talent from her father.

    C. The training offered by her father.

    D. Her confidence in her sports ability.

    26. What happened after the author stepped into adulthood?

    A. She maintained her love for sports.

    B. She preferred reading to exercising.

    C. She generally exercised on weekends.

    D. She joined Royal Canadian Air Force.

    27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the article?

    A. To express her love for sports and health.

    B. To stress the benefits of physical exercise.

    C. To describe how her father built her interest in sports.

    D. To think back to her childhood memories about sports.

    C

Monica is a professional doctor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Growing up in Wyoming,

she was well aware of the lack of health care resources in countrysides. Access to in-depth health

care for cancer (癌症) patients is hard to get. She’s worked throughout her life to change that.

In Wyoming, there’s a great distance to travel between where people live and where they can

find a cancer doctor. “If you  need treatments and they have to be done every  day, and if it’s 120

miles from where you live, it is very hard to receive the kind of care you need.”

    4

And now  Monica serves  as the president  of the  Coalition (联盟)   of  Cancer Cooperative

Groups (CCCG) —  an international network of individuals  who work to improve the  quality of

life and survival of cancer patients by taking part in cancer clinical trials more.

She said, “One of the important things is that we’re trying to make sure cancer clinical trials

can reach  every single patient  who needs them  in my own  state.” The coalition  set up sites  in

northern and  southern Wyoming that are  able to  run clinical trials.  Before those trials,  patients

would usually go to Denver or Salt Lake City — a three-to-seven-hour drive.

Monica’s  efforts to  increase access  to the  health  care needs  of her  patients  also include

helping to develop  new policies that  will allow patients to  take part in  more clinical trials,  and

linking them with a regional doctor who can get them the access to the care they need.

Besides the clinical trials, Monica  said that technology’s progress like better cell phone  and

internet service in  the mountains of Wyoming,  as well as social  media, has helped local  people

stay in touch with medical professionals despite their distance. She will continue to support those

    changes.

“I still consider myself part of Wyoming and I am very devoted to making  sure that patients

can get access to health care.”

    28. What do cancer patients in the countrysides of Wyoming need most?

    A. Better housing.

    B. Complete health care.

    D. Public transportation.

    C. Further education.

    29. How has Monica helped the cancer patients?

    A. By offering clinical trials.

    B. By supporting financial aid.

    C. By improving internet service.

    30. Which of the following can best describe Monica?

    A. Determined and creative.

    D. By training medical professionals.

    B. Honest and generous.

    C. Grateful and courageous.

    D. Devoted and responsible.

    31. What is a suitable title for the text?

    A. Technology: A push for progress

    B. Monica: A helper for cancer patients

    C. CCCG: A pioneer for cancer treatment

    D. Clinical trials: A hope for cancer patients

    D

Air Tag, a small Bluetooth-and-GPS-enabled device (设备), was released (发布) by Apple in

April 2021. This small device aimed at making our lives easier was originally designed to end the

trouble  of losing  keys, wallets  or  other little  objects. However,  it  may become  the “perfect”

tracking tool if in the wrong hands. My husband was an early user of the Air Tag. He and I had an

argument. In order to win the argument, he used the little device to track me.

    5

The Apple company brought great convenience to the users, including me. I had never given

a thought to tracking through Air Tag until it happened to me. So I started reading stories about Air

Tag. I was surprised to find that I was not alone. There were so many people tracked by it in their

daily life. Air Tag which was originally for a better life should have such a dark side in the wrong

    hands.

People have found that the digital device can be wrongly used. What matters is how to avoid

its danger. Apple has released updates to the Air Tag’s functionality very quickly since they hit the

market. Meanwhile, Apple has also improved its customer service to deal with the problem. If you

find an unwanted Air Tag following you, don’t worry. Just disable it. You can follow the advice on

your Apple device  to learn more about  disabling the device.  Once you’ve completed  the above

step, the tag’s original owner can’t keep track of you any more.

Almost every  digital technology  creates security  issues. Nobody  can go  and live  without

being affected. While enjoying  its convenience, you need  to be aware of the risks  it brings, and

know how to deal with them. Prevention is more effective in security issues than fixes. After all,  a

    stitch in time saves nine.

    32. Which of the following sentences is true about Air Tag?

    A. Air Tag was designed to locate one’s phone correctly in the first place.

    B. The author read stories about Air Tag to know about its great convenience.

    C. Equipped with Air Tag, our smart phone can be ensured of absolute security.

    D. Air Tag was misused for improper purpose in the hands of the author’s husband.

    33. What is advised to do when you are followed by an unwanted Air Tag?

    A. Have it updated.

    B. Make it unable to work.

    C. Pay no attention to it.

    D. Contact its original owner.

    34. What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?

    A. People should keep pace with the times.

    B. People should use technology in a proper way.

    C. People should handle potential digital risks actively.

    D. People should bear the responsibility to fix the problems.

    35. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?

    A. Time cures all things.

    B. Better late than never.

    C. Time and tide wait for no man.

    D. Early discovery, early solution.

Jenny was  the  only child  in her  home. She  had a  quarrel  (争吵  ) with  her mother  that

afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help crying sadly when she thought of

the angry  words from  her mother. After  she walked  aimlessly in  the street  for hours,  she felt

hungry but had no money. She stood in front of a shop which sold noodles for several minutes, but

she had to leave. The seller of the noodle shop came out and noticed the young girl.

“Hey, girl, you want to have noodles?”

“Oh, yes, but I have no money on me.” she replied.

“Oh, that’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” the owner said, “come in.”

The seller brought her a bowl of noodles,  whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating,

    Jenny cried silently.

“What is it?” asked the man kindly.

“Nothing, actually I was  just touched by your kindness!” said  Jenny as she wiped ()  her

tears. “Even a stranger on  the street will give me a bowl of  noodles, while my mother drove me

    9

out of  the house.  She showed  no care  for me.  She is  so merciless  (无情的  )  compared to  a

    stranger!”

Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of

noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby.

Can you number the times she has cooked for you? Have you expressed your thanks to her?”

Jenny sat there, speechless and awkward with shock; she remembered mother’s familiar face

and weathered (饱经风霜的)    hands.  “Why did I not  think of that? A bowl  of noodles from  a

stranger made me feel thankful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”

On the way home,  Jenny made up her  mind to say sorry to  her mother for her rudeness  as

    soon as she arrived home.

Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath.

A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back.
