A flood hit Yellowstone National Park on June 13, 2022. The disaster was caused by
a combination of unusually heavy rains and rapid snow melt. The high and fast water flows destroyed bridges and swept away entire roadways, leaving communities and homes isolated. Fortunately, the approximately 10,000 park visitors were safely evacuated(撤离).
The town of Gardiner, along the Montana-Wyoming border, was particularly hard hit. The floodwaters left almost 900 people with no power or water for many days. Gardiner’s economy, which depends on the almost three-quarters of a million visitors who pass through the park’s north gate annually,is likely to take a hit. The floodwaters severely damaged the main north entrance road to Yellowstone, and could take years to rebuild.
Park officials have begun work on improving an alternative road to Gardiner. This will ensure that locals can access food, supplies, and other essential emergency services. A limited number of tourists may also be allowed into Gardiner once the road is stable.
Yellowstone’s north gate is closed indefinitely. But the park’s south gate opened to visitors on June 22, 2022. Park officials have started a new entry system to prevent overcrowding. It is based on the last number of the visitor’s vehicle license plate and the calendar date of the month. Cars with odd (奇数的) numbers can visit the park on odd days of the month, while those with even (偶数的) numbers can go on even days.
Established in 1872, Yellowstone is America’s oldest national park. The 3,472-square-mile reserve spans three states and is home to many unique wildlife. It is known for its natural beauty that includes mountains, rivers and lakes. The forces of fire and ice shaped the park over thousands of years.

D.The park’s south gate was closed for a while.
26.What can be inferred from the text?

Some of the tall conifers (针叶树) that have grown up in California’s Sierra Nevada are no longer suitable for the climate they live in, new research has shown. Although there are conifers in those areas now, Hill and other researchers suggested that as the trees die out, they’ll be replaced with other types of plants better suited to the environmental conditions.
The team estimated that about 20% of all Sierra Nevada conifer trees in California are no longer suitable for the climate around them and are in danger of disappearing. They called these trees “zombie forests”. That change is largely due to higher temperatures and less rainfall in these lower-elevation areas.
In addition, human activities, such as logging and an increase in wildfires, have an effect on the reduction of conifers.
The Sierra Nevada conifers aren’t standing still. The average elevation ( 海 拔 ) of the trees has increased over the past 90 years, moving 112 feet upslope (上坡). According to Hill, that is because lower-elevation conifers have died while conifers at higher elevations where the air is cooler have been able to grow. But the conifers’ uphill trek hasn’t been able to keep pace with the dramatic increase in temperatures. The researchers said the number of Sierra Nevada conifers incompatible (不能共处的) with their environments could double in the next 77 years.
To help shape people’s understanding of the effects of climate change, Hill and his colleaguesdeveloped some maps which show the state’s “zombie forests”. “These maps are unique, in that you can put your finger on a point and it will say, ‘This area right here is expected to move upslope due to climate change in the near future’, and this brings some really difficult questions about what we want this land managed for. Do we try to resist these upcoming changes?’’ Hill added. “Conservationists know, scientists know, so many people know that ecosystems are changing and expect them to change better, and people are dealing with this.” he said.
28.What mainly causes some conifer trees in Sierra Nevada in danger?
A.Zombie forests. B.Human activities.
C.Other types of plants. D.Environmental conditions.
29.What do the Sierra Nevada conifers do to survive?
A.They double in number.
B.They give in to the environment.
C.They move to higher-elevation areas.
D.They keep pace with the rising temperatures.
30.What’s special about Hill’s maps?
A.They explain the problem in audio.
B.They show the state’s “zombie forests”.
C.They present the effects of climate change.
D.They persuade people to change their minds.
31.What do Hill’s words imply?
A.People should try to resist changes to the ecosystem.
B.People should make more efforts to improve the ecosystem.
C.People should manage land for humankind instead of plants.
D.People should work together to deal with the current problem.
D
ChatGPT, a new chatbot model developed by US-based AI research laboratory OpenAI, has quickly become a hit globally due to its advanced conversational capabilities.
It can write emails, computer codes, even academic papers and poems, and has passed a number of tests within seconds. Academicians worldwide are discussing whether AI should be used in education. Some universities have banned it. The New York City’s Department of Education, for example, banned the chatbot from its public school devices and networks, with some people warning that it could encourage more students to cheat, especially in exams.
Many more welcome this app, claiming that, like most technological advances and groundbreaking innovations in history, ChatGPT is a powerful tool for the development of higher education.
Embracing AI as early as possible is advisable. Higher education institutions should make preparations for including AI in their syllabus (教学大纲). They can start by offering related courses, because by understanding how it works, they can make better use of it. Besides, students with good knowledge of AI are more competitive when it comes to getting a good job, as an increasing number of jobs are being done by computer programmes—some in cooperation with humans. AI-powered education technologies can be adopted to make the learning experience more suitable for each student based on his or her strengths and weaknesses. As for professors, AI can free them from doing some dull tasks so they can concentrate on teaching and interacting with students.
Since we cannot avoid ChatGPT and other AI-powered applications from entering the field of higher education, we should make collective efforts to ensure they have a positive impact on society and the future of education. Despite AI helping make learning much more interesting and enjoyable, humans need to work very hard to win the race with technology.
32.Why do some higher education institutions forbid ChatGPT?
A.ChatGPT can write emails and computer codes quickly.
B.Some professors might not perform their duties properly.
C.Students would have conversations with each other via it.
D.Students might seek help from it in completing the exams.
33.What is the author’s attitude towards AI applications in education?
A.Fearful. B.Disapproving. C.Supportive. D.Uncertain.
34.How can AI benefit students of higher education?
A.It offers students an increasing number of jobs.
B.It personalizes students’ learning experience.
C.It equips students with competitive skills to cooperate with humans.
D.It handles uninteresting tasks so students can better focus on learning.
35.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.We should guard against AI apps.
B.AI will be more widely used in education.
C.The future of education relies on AI apps.
D.Humans will be left behind by technology.

Tom was a fishing amateur(业余爱好者). He once came to a wet place in the roadless forest to fish with his friends William and Tony. They put up their tent upon the top of a pine-clothed mountain and then began fishing. However, none of them was successful fisherman. They were either made lazy by the sun or wet by the rain. After two days of fishing, they got nothing. Finally they ate the last bit of bacon and smoked and burned the last fearful corncake. If they didn’t get anything to eat, they would have to starve.
Immediately Tom volunteered to stay and hold the camp while the remaining two should go miles away to a farmhouse for supplies. Hearing Tom’s suggestion, the two friends gazed(凝视) at him jokingly.“ There is only one of you—be careful, for bears may appear and keep you company!” Tom didn’t take what they said seriously. Then the two men disappeared down the hill in the known direction of a distant wooden house.
Night came, but the two men did not return. Tom sat close to his companion, the campfire. He lit a cigarette and felt a thousand shadows were about to come towards him. Suddenly he heard the approach of something unknown, crackling(发噼啪声) the small branches and rustling(使沙沙作响) the dead leaves. Feeling a bit scared, Tom rose slowly to his feet. His cigarette dropped from his mouth and his knees shook with fear. “Hah!” he shouted in a loud voice in the hope of scaring his opponent away. A roar replied and a bear paced into the light of the fire.
