In order to make a reservation, please fill in the pre-reservation form. This form is compulsory for all types of visits. The pre-booking form is not a confirmation of reservation. Work is a part of living—my grandparents understood that. They lived and worked on a central Pennsylvania farm that has been in my family for 150 years. Hess Farm, at that time, was self-sufficient. They raised beef cattle for meat, chickens for eggs and hogs for pork and lard. Dairy cows were kept for milk and the cream from which Grandma made butter and cheese. That little yard they had become a garden.

The Depression, therefore, didn’t make a dramatic change in their lives. But it did bring an unending flow of men out of work, drifting from job to job, to the farm. The first man to show up on the kitchen porch was ragged-looking, but polite. He took off his hat and quietly explained that he hadn’t eaten for a while. Grandpa stood watching him a bit, then said, “There’s a pile of firewood stacked against the fence behind the barn (畜棚). I’ve been needing to get it moved to the other side of the fence. You have just about enough time to finish the job before lunch.” With that, he stuck out his rough hand to the stranger.

A CHATBOT developed by tech company OpenAI can find and fix bugs in software just as well as standard machine learning approaches can and beats them when aided by follow-up questions. A number of tools exist that use artificial intelligence to check programming code to ensure there are no mistakes.

Dominik Sobania at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, and his colleagues sought to see how well ChatGPT could do this compared with other AI-powered coding support tools. They first asked ChatGPT to answer questions taken from the QuixBug benchmark（基准）dataset，which is a series of small but challenging programming problems. For example，they gave the AI a small snippet（代码段）of code and asked：“Does this program have a bug? How do you fix it?” ChatGPT managed to correctly answer 19 out of 40 questions put to it-comparable with two other deep learning-based code fixing approaches, called CoCoNuT and Codex. That roughly 50 percent success rate was considered state-of-the-art for such tools before ChatGPT.

The researchers then utilized ChatGPT’s conversational interface（界面）to ask follow-up questions that a user would pose if they tried to insert the corrected code into a programming tool. This approach highlighted where ChatGPT's solution was incorrect and meant that in 31 of the 40 questions, ChatGPT solved the issue. “That was really surprising, because we haven't seen it before,” says Sobania. “That's something new.” Sobania expects ChatGPT or similar systems to be adopted as an additional trouble shooting tool for programmers in the future.

This is a good idea, but human oversight is still needed, says Alan Woodward at the University of Surrey in the UK. “We don't want to rely totally on the AI as it is not errorless.”

A star athlete at the college where I work recently stopped by my office. After committing a few unforced errors during a weekend match, she was torn apart by self-criticism. “I can’t stop beating myself up,” she told me. “I’m at peak fitness, and I practice hard. How is this happening?”

Many students I teach, like this athlete, believe that all-nighters in the library and hours on the field should get them exactly where they need to go. When they fall short of what they imagine they should accomplish, they are crushed by self-blame.

We talk often about young adults struggling with failure because their parents have protected them from discomfort. But there is something else at play among the most privileged in particular: a false promise that they can achieve anything if they are willing to work for it.

Psychologists have sourced this phenomenon to a misapplication of “mind set” research, which has found that praising children for effort will increase academic performance. But a recent analysis found that while praising effort over ability may benefit high-risk or economically disadvantaged students, it does not necessarily help everyone.

The cruel, messy reality is that you can do everything in your power and still fail. Instead of allowing our kids to beat themselves up when things don’t go their way, we should all question a culture that has taught them that feeling anything less than overwhelmed means they’re lazy, and that where they go to college matters more than the kind of person they are. It’s suggested that parents and teachers spend time helping students find purpose, or goals they genuinely love to pursue and that make an impact on the world, which may help them gain greater life satisfaction and become more psychologically mature.

The point is not to give our kids a pass on working hard. But we would be wise to remind our kids that life has a way of sucker-punching us when we least expect it. It’s often the people who learn to say “stuff happens” who get up the fastest.
