Where is the value of protecting wild animals? Different people have different
opinions about it. In some people’s opinion, the easiest way to protect wild animals is
to save each individual wild animal. On seeing a recovered kestrel return to the blue
sky, each person who has taken part in protecting it will be sure to feel moved.
However, the value of protecting each individual wild animal usually doesn’t lie
in the individual wild animal itself, but in the entire species behind the individual.
There are differences between animals and human beings. According to biologist
Richard Dawkins, the biggest difference possibly lies in that animals are short of
social culture. Here, the culture refers to the behavior pattern which may be copied.
Human beings depend on culture for heritage, so the protection of culture is
necessary. However, wild animals depend on the genes for heritage, so it’s important
第4页(共12页)
to keep the natural genes in existence. As long as wild animals can pass the genes
down, the entire species will survive. Therefore, wild animals’ value mostly lies in
their genes, and the existence of the species is more important. The individual death
cannot be avoided, but the genes may exist forever through the gene bank of the
species, keeping the species existent.
When we protect the individual wild animal, this is more of a measure than a
goal of protecting the wild animals. Therefore, the Yellowstone National Park has
introduced the wolf to control the number of deer and get rid of the old, weak, sick
deer. Such behavior, in nature, is completely normal.
If the species itself isn’t in danger, then working hard to protect the individual
can do nothing good to the entire species. Of course for other reasons, we still hope to
protect these individuals from death, but this doesn’t belong to the narrow sense of
animal protection.
24. What does the underlined word “kestrel” in the first paragraph refer to?
A. A kind of fish
B. A kind of bird
C. A kind of gene
D. A kind of disease
25. What is animals’ biggest difference from human beings?
A. Their lack of social culture.
B. Their dependence on nature.
C. Their independence on heritage.
D. Their lack of communication with others.
26. How should we protect wild animals according to the text?
A. By saving the weak individuals.
B. By protecting every individual wild animal.
C. By making their genes exist forever.
D. By making laws against killing wild animals.
27. What does the author intend to show by mentioning the Yellowstone National
Park?
A. We should kill the old, weak, sick deer.
B. Protecting wild animals is always our goal.
C. We should protect all wild animals.
D. Protecting the individual wild animal is a measure.

National Handwriting Day is on January 23rd. It shows the importance of the
skill of handwriting. It is an important day, because in today’s world people use a
computer keyboard more often than a pen. Some people are worried that in the future,
handwriting might become lost art. The Writing Instrument Manufacturers
Association (WIMA) started National Handwriting Day in 1977. They chose January
